The White Horse Museum and its street number
The White Horse Museum (白马馆), part of Hohhot Museum, is at No. 178 Xinhua Street (新华大街) in Xincheng District. The building dates to 1957. Its former street number, No. 44, changed in July 2025, so older maps and pages may still show it. This is a separate venue from the new Inner Mongolia Museum (内蒙古博物院新馆) at No. 76 Xinhua East Street (新华东街); check both the museum name and full address when navigating.
How much time to allow
Allow about 1.5 hours for the highlights of Hohhot’s history and culture exhibition. A closer visit from the introductory gallery through the themed sections, with a temporary exhibition, takes 2 to 3 hours. The museum is a manageable size for part of a half-day; your actual visit depends on which galleries are open and how long you spend reading.

Qingcheng history and culture
Launched in 2026, the exhibition “河山辉映 奕奕青城” (“Rivers and Mountains Reflect, Splendid Qingcheng”) links local history through six themes and displays more than 700 cultural objects and groups of objects. It traces the city’s development and interactions among its many communities. Start with the overview, then follow the gallery route to connect the objects with changes in the city.
Objects to look for
Objects featured when the exhibition opened included a Han dynasty sundial, the “单于和亲” (Chanyu Marriage Alliance) brick, a Zhongtong Yuanbao banknote in the museum’s collection, a Northern Wei gold plaque ornament, and a Liao dynasty brick-carved Bodhisattva head. Some objects are on loan or may move; check the labels and current gallery guide when you arrive before deciding which cases to explore in detail.
The building and galleries
The white horse sculpture on the roof is the building’s most recognizable exterior feature. Inside, the displays focus on city history and archaeological finds. Leave time to read the labels if you are interested in local history, ceramics, or architectural elements.
Who will enjoy it
Visitors interested in Hohhot’s local history, historic trade with Mongolia, and the city’s development can distinguish this museum’s city-focused displays from the regional history at Inner Mongolia Museum. It also suits visitors interested in architecture and archaeology. For a quick introduction to Qingcheng (青城), focus on a few representative cases in the main exhibition.
Build your day
The 1.5-hour highlights route
Check the floor guide at the entrance, read the main exhibition overview, and follow the themed sections in order. When you reach objects such as the Han dynasty sundial and the “单于和亲” brick, first check whether they are still on display, then choose which ones to study more closely. Finish by reviewing the account of the city’s history and follow signs back to the entrance.
The 2- to 3-hour unhurried route
Walk through “河山辉映 奕奕青城” in full, following its chronological and thematic threads. Take time with the Liao brick carving, gold plaque ornament, and objects related to the city’s trade. If a temporary exhibition is open that day, visit it after the main exhibition. Follow the current route if a gallery is closed or an object is on loan; there is no need to backtrack for displays that are unavailable.
A museum visit in the city center
The General’s Office (将军衙署博物院) is a possible next stop; check the day’s map and choose to walk or make a short transfer. If you also want to visit Dazhao Temple (大召寺) and Saishang Old Street (塞上老街), leave extra time to reach the southern old city. Check each venue’s closure day so you do not schedule Hohhot Museum on a Tuesday.
Food and a break
There are places to eat around Xinhua Street and New Century Plaza (新世纪广场) for lunch or a tea break, depending on what is open that day. Check the map and current business hours before making a detour; if your visit is short, finish the gallery route first.
Get there
Address and entrance
Set your destination to “Hohhot Museum” or No. 178 Xinhua Street, Xincheng District. Enter through the open main entrance; if temporary barriers or an event affect access, follow staff directions.
Metro and bus
Take Metro Line 1 to People’s Hall (Renmin Huiguan; 人民会堂站), then use a map and the station’s exit signs to walk to the museum. Walking directions vary by exit, so check the live map and signs when you arrive. For buses, look up current routes serving New Century Plaza or nearby stops and confirm them before you travel.
Taxi and parking
Tell your driver you are going to Hohhot Museum at No. 178 Xinhua Street, so it is not confused with the new Inner Mongolia Museum. City-center traffic and parking conditions vary by time of day; if driving, check the parking entrance, fees, and availability, and do not rely on roadside stopping.
