Plan at a glance

The office and the city’s history

The General’s Office Museum is at No. 31 Xinhua Street (新华大街) in Xincheng District (新城区). Built during the Qianlong era of the Qing dynasty (乾隆年间) to the standards of a first-rank frontier official, it served as the residence and office of the general of Suiyuan City (绥远城). It is a different venue from the new Inner Mongolia Museum (内蒙古博物院新馆) at No. 76 Xinhua East Street (新华东街); check the full name and address when navigating.

How much time to allow

Allow about 1 hour to follow the main axis, see the main hall, and visit one thematic exhibition. For a closer look at the three courtyards and their architecture and displays, plus the Suiyuan Model exhibition and underground command room, allow 1.5 to 2 hours. Gallery access and on-site tours can affect the length of your visit.

The historic axis and today’s entrance

Historically, buildings along the north–south axis were arranged in this order: the screen wall (照壁), main gate (府门), ceremonial gate (仪门), main hall (大堂), and second hall (二堂). Today, Xinhua Street separates the screen wall from the main gate, and visitors enter through the open east gate. Inside, follow the current visitor guide through the ceremonial gate, main hall, second hall, and other areas open to visitors; do not enter closed rooms.

“屏藩朔漠” and details of the government compound

The screen wall south of the main gate bears the inscription “屏藩朔漠,” evoking Suiyuan City’s frontier-defense role; Xinhua Street runs between it and the main gate. To see the wall, view it from a safe public place. Do not cross traffic or climb over barriers, and do not mistake the screen wall for the museum entrance. Inside the compound, notice how the ceremonial gate, halls, and side rooms served different purposes in government and daily life. Check photography signs indoors and keep passageways clear.

The Suiyuan Model Exhibition and underground command room

The Suiyuan Model Exhibition (绥远方式展示馆) covers the history of Suiyuan’s peaceful liberation. Its underground command room, built in 1935, officially opened to visitors in 2026. Confirm the entrance and accessible areas for the day; the space is narrow, so consider whether it is suitable for older adults and children in your group.

Who will enjoy it

Visitors interested in Qing dynasty government buildings, frontier defense, and modern Suiyuan history can spend time among the courtyard buildings and thematic exhibitions. If you are short on time, the main courtyards can be seen in about an hour. With children, explain how the main hall, ceremonial gate, and underground site served different purposes.

Build your day

The 1-hour highlights route

Enter through the open east gate and follow the on-site guide to the ceremonial gate, main hall, and second hall. If time allows, visit the Suiyuan Model exhibition and check whether the underground command room is open. Then follow signs back to an open exit. View the outer screen wall separately from a safe public place; do not cross Xinhua Street or include it in the walking route inside the compound.

The 1.5- to 2-hour unhurried route

Enter through the east gate and start with the “History of the Government Compound” display or the current historical guide. Follow the open route through the ceremonial gate, main hall, second hall, and courtyards; then visit the thematic exhibition, Suiyuan Model Exhibition, and underground command room if open. Take a short break in Chengyuan Garden (澄园) before following signs to an open exit. If a room is temporarily closed, skip it rather than doubling back to complete a checklist.

Combine it with other central Hohhot sights

The museum is in the city center and can be paired with Hohhot Museum (呼和浩特博物馆). The General’s Office Museum is usually closed on Mondays, while Hohhot Museum is usually closed on Tuesdays, so check each venue’s schedule before choosing a day. If you also plan to visit Dazhao Temple (大召寺) and Saishang Old Street (塞上老街), allow extra time for the north–south transfer; a nearby metro stop does not mean the whole trip is a short walk.

Get there

Address and entrance

Navigate to “Inner Mongolia General’s Office Museum” (内蒙古自治区将军衙署博物院) or No. 31 Xinhua Street, Xincheng District. Visitors currently enter through the east gate, which is separate from the historic main gate on the central axis. The screen wall south of the main gate is across Xinhua Street and is not an entrance. Check the gate notice when you arrive and follow the open entrance and recommended route.

Metro and bus

Take Metro Line 1 to General’s Office Station (将军衙署站) and leave through Exit C2, then follow signs to the museum. For buses, check current routes serving General’s Office stop (将军衙署站) or Bank of China Inner Mongolia Branch stop (中国银行内蒙古分行站) and confirm service before you travel.

Taxi and driving

Give the driver No. 31 Xinhua Street (新华大街) and confirm a drop-off point near the east gate. If driving, check nearby parking entrances, fees, and available spaces; central-city events and traffic can affect parking.

Know before you go

Opening hours and closure day

Regular hours are Tuesday to Sunday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with last entry at 4:30 p.m. The museum is closed on Mondays except on statutory public holidays. It may extend hours or adjust its closure schedule for events; check Hohhot Museum’s notice on the day of your visit.

Free admission and identification

Recent public holiday visitor guidance says admission is free, reservations are not required, and visitors must show their own valid identification. Temporary exhibitions, tours, and events may have additional requirements; confirm the day’s arrangements in the museum’s current notice.

Galleries and protecting the site

Access to buildings, indoor displays, and the underground site may change for maintenance or crowd management. Read signs at the entrance and in the galleries. Do not touch plaques, timber structures, artifacts, or equipment; follow the photography rules posted on site. In the underground area, follow safety directions and do not cross barriers.
