Plan at a glance
A water activity inside the ancient town
The Nanxun Ancient Town rowboat is a water activity on the town's canals, with possible sections through the southern district, northern district and the area around Baijianlou. Common docks include Xiaolianzhuang, Guanghui Bridge, the Former Residence of Zhang Jingjiang, the Silk and Shizigang areas, but the usable docks and routes may change that day.
It suits a short experience of about 15–30 minutes and can cover part of a cross-district transfer. Walking is enough to visit the town; the boat covers only its relevant water section, while paid residences still follow their own ticket checks. Decide based on your group, the weather, the departure schedule and the return plan.
Tickets and operation
Daytime rowboats may charge by the whole boat, while shared-boat arrangements, capacity and waiting time depend on the dock. Water buses and night boats have different tickets and routes. Price, capacity, boarding point and last departure follow the day's arrangement, so confirm the relevant water section before buying.
The water activity may be affected by weather, waterways, crowds and boat dispatch. Buying in advance or arriving at the dock does not guarantee that every departure will operate as planned, so keep a walking route available.

Nanxun's waterways from the boat
From the lower perspective of a boat, you can see white walls, dark tiles, bridge openings and riverside residences. It suits visitors who have already walked part of the town and want a different viewpoint. Short sections work well as a single experience; longer sections require more thought about boarding, disembarking and the return walk.
The water view around Baijianlou differs from the canals near the southern residences, but each boat's actual route follows the day's dock arrangements. Do not skip walking and return planning just because of one photograph or one route description.
Who this suits
Families, groups travelling with older adults and visitors who enjoy slow water-town observation will often like the rowboat. Visitors prone to motion sickness, sensitive to sun, concerned about waiting or carrying large luggage should first consider the space on the boat and the boarding conditions.
If the main purpose is visiting residences and museums, walking gives you better control over time. The boat can be one optional part of the visit, while the town's streets still need to be explored along public walking routes.
Build your day
Short daytime ride
At the dock, ask about the water section, boarding and disembarkation points, waiting order and return arrangements before deciding whether to buy. After the short ride, continue on foot from the drop-off point to a nearby bridge or district, leaving time to find the exit.
If the queue is long, walk through nearby public streets first and return to check the waiting situation. Do not cross a crowded bridge to catch one boat, and do not make the water ride the only way to reach the next residence.
Linking the southern and northern districts
If you plan to travel from the south to Baijianlou, compare walking, the water bus and the rowboat. If you choose the boat, confirm how far the disembarkation point is from Baijianlou or your next residence, and leave time for the walk after getting off.
The boat ticket covers only the relevant water section. After arriving in the north, continue along public roads. To enter Xiaolianzhuang, the Former Residence of Zhang Shiming, Liu's Former Home or the Former Residence of Zhang Jingjiang, follow each attraction's own ticket and admission arrangements.
Evening boat
Night-boat docks, routes, capacity and operating hours may all be adjusted separately, so decide after the daytime route is clear. Before boarding, confirm the final drop-off point and return method. Do not leave a long walk, parking retrieval and station transfer until after the last boat.
Weather, crowds or temporary dispatch changes may affect the night ride. If the service is cancelled or the wait becomes too long, walking along public riverbanks or leaving the town early is usually easier to execute.
Get there
Reaching the dock
From Huzhou Nanxun Station, take a taxi to the South or East Gate, then walk to the dock confirmed for that day. Docks are in different districts, and taking a car to a town entrance followed by a walk is usually clearer than trying to find a specific dock inside narrow lanes.
For driving, use an official parking area near the South or East Gate or another approved area, then walk to the dock. Include the distance between docks, bridge crowds and the waiting time in your water-activity plan.
Boarding, disembarking and the return
Different docks may have different steps, waiting areas and disembarkation directions. With children, older adults or slower-moving companions, check whether boarding is practical before buying, and follow the staff's instructions when getting on and off.
After disembarking, confirm which district you are in and where the nearest exit is. Finishing the boat ride does not mean that you are back at the original dock; do not search for a vehicle or accommodation based only on the boarding location.
Know before you go
Price, capacity and last departures
Rowboats may sell seats by the whole boat, shared boat or passenger. Day boats, night boats and water buses are different products with different routes. Confirm the boat type, route, price, capacity, boarding and drop-off points and last departure before setting out, then listen again to the dispatch information while queueing.
Popular periods may involve a wait, and a full boat cannot take extra passengers. For a larger group, confirm that everyone can board together before arranging the ticket time for the next attraction.
Weather and waterside safety
Rain, strong wind, bright sun and summer mosquitoes all affect the ride. Bring water, sun protection and insect repellent. Sit securely on board; when taking photographs, do not lean too far out, stand on the edge or put your body outside the boat.
Docks, bridges and riverbanks may be slippery. Children and people with limited mobility need help when boarding and disembarking. If water levels, weather or dispatch arrangements change, prioritise a safe walking route.
Keep it separate from town admission
The rowboat is an optional activity inside the ancient town. Its ticket does not include paid residences, museums, parking or food. If you are visiting indoor attractions, set the admission order first and then decide whether the boat belongs at the beginning or end of the route.
If only a short time remains, walking the public streets can still give you a Nanxun experience. A change to the boat schedule should not force you into closed areas, make you miss your return or send you along an unfamiliar road for a long night walk.
