Dianchi is a large lake, so first-time visitors should pick a useful section such as Haigeng Dam, Haigeng Park, Western Hills, or a wetland stop instead of trying to circle the lake.

These areas give you the easiest lake, gull, and Western Hills views without complicated transfers. In gull season, go early or late afternoon when birds are more active.
Pair the lake with Western Hills only if you have enough time
The Western Hills viewpoint and cableway can make a strong lake day, but it adds ticket and transport decisions. Keep it for a half-day or full-day plan.
Keep transport flexible around weekends and gull season
Metro Line 5 works well for the lakefront, while taxis are useful for wetland or village stops. Expect traffic and parking pressure near Haigeng on popular dates.
