Decide which side you actually want
The Lijiang-side upper gorge is easier and more suitable for casual visitors. The deeper hiking experience is more demanding and often associated with the Shangri-La side.
Use the easy route for a first visit
For a low-effort visit, take the scenic transport where available, walk the safer viewing paths, and focus on the Tiger Leaping Stone and river power.
Plan the hiking route separately
If you want the classic high trail, start with a dedicated hiking plan, luggage strategy, guesthouse stop, and return transport.
Respect closures and water conditions
Gorge routes can change with rain, rockfall, construction, or safety controls. Follow posted restrictions even if social media shows older access.

✦Wear shoes with grip; paths and steps can be wet or gritty.
