Location and entrance
Hukou Waterfall on the Shanxi side is in Hukou Town, Jixian County, Linfen. For a taxi or self-drive trip, enter the full destination name “Shanxi Yellow River Hukou Waterfall Scenic Area.” At the visitor centre, follow the scenic-area route to the main viewing zone. The Shanxi and Shaanxi sides have separate arrival and viewing arrangements; these notes apply to the Shanxi-side route.
Tickets, reservation and hours
Peak season is roughly April to October, and admission is about CNY 100 per person. Reserve online in advance; entry involves identity-document verification, so international visitors should confirm the accepted document when booking. The visitor centre is about 5 kilometres from the main waterfall area; the shuttle costs CNY 20 per person and is usually needed. Daily departures and opening arrangements can change, so use the day's scenic-area notice. Peak-season hours are roughly 07:00–18:30, with some variation between booking platforms.
How much time to allow
For the main waterfall and a return to the visitor centre, allow 1–1.5 hours. Add the Ten-Mile Dragon Trough and more of the open trail for a 2–3-hour visit. The drive from central Linfen takes about 1.5–2.5 hours, so this works best as a full-day outing rather than a same-day combination with Yunqiu Mountain.

Main waterfall viewpoint
The main Shanxi-side viewpoint faces Hukou directly, with the Yellow River, the gorge and the spray all in view. When the water is high, the roar and mist are intense; the atmosphere is much stronger in person than in photographs. Stay behind the viewing boundary and do not lean over the railing for a better angle.
Ten-Mile Dragon Trough
Beyond the main waterfall, the Ten-Mile Dragon Trough narrows the Yellow River into a gorge. It suits visitors who want a longer walk and a closer look at the river landscape. It is not a second waterfall; the extra time is mainly for walking and viewing the gorge.
Dragon Cave and seasonal conditions
Dragon Cave once offered a distinctive view from below the falls on the Shanxi side, but it is closed for renovation and there is no confirmed reopening date. Do not include it in the route. On a clear morning, a rainbow is more likely between 09:00 and 11:00. Water levels are often higher in April–May and September–October, while ice formations appear only when temperatures are low enough, usually from December to February. None of these sights is guaranteed.
Who this suits
This is a good full-day choice for visitors interested in Yellow River landscapes who are comfortable with a long round trip, wind and spray. Older visitors, young children and anyone with limited mobility should look at the trail, viewing boundaries and shuttle arrangements before setting out. Choose the Ten-Mile Dragon Trough according to conditions on the day.

Short route: main waterfall and return
Complete the reservation check and ticket inspection at the visitor centre, then take the shuttle to the main viewing zone. Follow the main path to the waterfall viewpoint, stop for photographs, return along the same route to the shuttle stop and ride back to the visitor centre. The visit takes about 1–1.5 hours and works well when you still have a long journey afterwards.
Highlights route: main waterfall and Ten-Mile Dragon Trough
Take the shuttle from the visitor centre, see the main waterfall first, then add the Ten-Mile Dragon Trough along the open trail before returning to the shuttle stop and visitor centre. Allow about 2–3 hours, including time for the shuttle and the road journey back.
Return and nearby combinations
Driving from central Linfen takes about 1.5–2.5 hours, and the scenic-area parking lot is large; parking costs about CNY 10 per visit. A tourist shuttle runs from Linfen West Railway Station, taking about 1.5–2 hours and costing about CNY 99 one way, but departures need to be arranged in advance. Hukou, Xiaoxitian and Guangsheng Temple can form a southern Shanxi heritage route, but they are far apart and are better split across different days. Do not shorten the Hukou visit just to fit all three into one itinerary.

From Linfen
Enter the full scenic-area name in the navigation app. The drive from central Linfen takes about 1.5–2.5 hours and combines expressway and mountain roads. The Shanxi-side visitor centre is the destination anchor for this route; entrance and telephone details for the Shaanxi side do not apply here.
High-speed rail and tourist shuttle
From Linfen West Railway Station, take the tourist shuttle for a journey of about 1.5–2 hours and a fare of about CNY 99 one way. Departures may be limited, so confirm the service through a travel platform or local operator before leaving. If there is no direct shuttle, an improvised transfer can make the return journey difficult.
Parking and equipment
The scenic-area parking lot is large and costs about CNY 10 per visit. The main viewing area has almost no shade, so bring sun protection, water and an outer layer that can get wet. Spray can reach phones and cameras; a waterproof pouch is more useful here than elaborate camera equipment.
Know before you go
Reconfirm changing arrangements
Before departure, reconfirm the peak-season ticket, online reservation, identity-document verification, CNY 20 shuttle, opening hours and shuttle departures. Any current “one ticket, two days” offer or cross-bank arrangement depends on the ticketing rules in effect at the time. Access on the opposite bank requires separate confirmation and should not be counted as part of the Shanxi-side itinerary by default.
Water, wind and slippery paths
Water volume, rainbows and spray vary with the season and the day's river conditions, so photographs cannot guarantee the same experience. Paths can be wet and slippery; keep away from the edge of the railing in strong wind. Dragon Cave is currently excluded from the route because its reopening date has not been confirmed. If you want to fly a drone, register with safety staff on the riverbank and abandon the plan when signal or wind conditions are poor.
Photography and food
The 09:00–11:00 period is a good time to look for a rainbow, while evening light can work for photographs of the Yellow River sunset. Neither lighting nor a sunset view is guaranteed by the opening hours. Restaurants near the scenic area serve dishes including Yellow River carp, so you can eat nearby before the return trip. For group tours, ask in advance about the actual meeting point, stop duration, pickup order and return time.
