Location and entrance
Xiaoxitian Temple is on the summit of Phoenix Mountain in the western part of Xixian County, Linfen. Enter “Xiaoxitian” or “Qianfo'an” in your navigation app. The entrance is at the foot of the mountain, followed by about 200 steps up to the main Mahavira Hall. This climb is the main physical demand of the visit.
Tickets, reservation and hours
Admission is CNY 35 per person, and booking online 1–3 days ahead is recommended. If online tickets sell out, the scenic area's self-service machines may sell tickets during three periods: 07:30–10:30, 11:00–15:00 and 15:30–17:00. In peak season, roughly March to November, hours are around 07:30–18:30. In the low season, roughly December to February, hours are around 08:00–18:30.
How much time to allow
The short route takes about 1 hour: focus on the Mahavira Hall and then go back down. Allow 1.5–2 hours for a fuller visit with more time to study the hanging sculptures and the temple's history. The temple closes for routine inspection and maintenance on the last day of each month, so confirm the date and whether visitors will be admitted before setting out.

Ming-dynasty hanging sculptures in the Mahavira Hall
The Mahavira Hall is Xiaoxitian's centrepiece. Nearly 2,000 Ming-dynasty painted and hanging sculptures fill the roughly 170-square-metre hall, rising in layers through a compact space of colour and detail. It suits visitors who enjoy historic buildings and sculpture and are willing to look quietly in dim light while following visitor-flow limits.
From the overall space to the high details
After entering, stand a little back from the doorway to take in the composition. Then look up at the musicians, Heavenly Kings and other figures. Moving from the whole arrangement to smaller details makes the depth of the hall easier to read. Some individual figures have local names; if no name is given on site, simply focus on what you can see.
Morning light and crowds
The hall relies mainly on natural light. Slanting light at the doorway in the early morning may reach parts of the hanging sculptures, so early arrival can give you more time to look. Groups may increase after 09:00 and the time inside may be limited. Arriving early improves your chances of a quiet visit, but the light will not look the same every day.
Who this suits
Xiaoxitian is a good fit for visitors interested in Ming painted sculpture who can manage the steps and follow the hall's photography rules. With older visitors, young children or anyone with knee problems, confirm the steps and crowd conditions first. If you only want the main hall, choose the short route and leave the other lower-courtyard halls for another visit.

Short route: straight to the Mahavira Hall
After ticket inspection at the foot-of-mountain entrance, climb about 200 steps to the summit and go straight to the Mahavira Hall. First take in the hanging sculptures as a whole, then follow the visitor route to view the main figures. Go down by the other side, look briefly at the lower-courtyard halls and leave. Allow about 1 hour; this suits visitors short on time or energy.
Highlights route: more time inside the hall
Use the same mountain route, but first take in the full view from the doorway, then look at the central figures, the side sculptures and the high details in sequence. If an explanation or historical introduction is available, spend the extra time inside the hall and visit the lower courtyard on the way down. Allow about 1.5–2 hours. The extra time is for studying the hanging sculptures, not for adding a long-distance walk.
Arrival time and return
To avoid groups that may arrive after 09:00, reach the entrance before the peak-season opening time of 07:30 or the low-season opening time of 08:00. Actual ticket inspection and limits inside the hall follow the day's arrangements. After the visit, return to the parking area or county town. Driving from central Linfen takes about 3 hours, so schedule Xiaoxitian and Hukou Waterfall on separate days.

Driving
The drive from central Linfen takes about 3 hours. After leaving the expressway, the parking area is about 10 minutes away. You can enter “Xixian Xiaoxitian” in your navigation app. There are many mountain and county roads, so arrive during daylight and handle parking, tickets and preparations for the climb before starting up.
Public transport
The local “xiaohuangche” minibus (小黄车) from central Linfen to Xixian takes about 2 hours and costs about CNY 35 per person. Departures and the boarding point need to be confirmed in advance. Once you reach Xixian, you still need a short local transfer to the Phoenix Mountain entrance.
Steps and footwear
The climb from the entrance to the main halls includes about 200 steps, with some steep sections. Wear shoes with good grip and a secure fit. Large luggage will make the climb harder. Visitors with limited mobility should ask whether an assistance route is available rather than looking for an unofficial path.

Maintenance day and visitor limits
Before leaving, confirm the last-day-of-the-month maintenance closure, reservation availability, self-service ticket periods after online sell-out and the day's visitor limits. A CNY 35 ticket does not replace reservation or on-site inspection, and queues can vary by date.
Photography inside the hall
The hall is dim. Flash, tripods and selfie sticks are prohibited. Read the signs before taking photographs, and do not touch the hanging sculptures or block the passage.
Food and route combinations
Xixian is known for Yulu fragrant pears, and pear juice is easy to find in the county town. Xizhou lamb soup is another local choice. Xiaoxitian, Hukou Waterfall and Guangsheng Temple can form a heritage itinerary over separate days, but each has its own tickets and opening arrangements and the distances are too great for a guaranteed one-day loop.
