Plan at a glance
Open streets and separately ticketed venues
Changting Ancient City is in Tingzhou Town, Changting County, Longyan, Fujian. The city was historically called Tingzhou. The area around Jichuan Gate, Sanyuan Pavilion, and Diantou Street is an open district with no single admission ticket. Paid venues such as Wolong Academy, Hakka Eight Happiness Building, Dafudi, and the Jichuan Gate wall climb still need their own tickets and follow their own opening hours.
Do not interpret "the old city is free" as meaning every gate tower, exhibition hall, show, or river cruise is free. You can walk only the free streets, or buy a combination ticket covering several paid venues, but the exact venues included that day depend on the ticket notice.
Transport and time needed
From Changting South high-speed rail station, a taxi takes about 15 minutes. Bus routes 1 and 2 also serve the old city, with a fare of about CNY 2. Drivers should park in a car park outside the old city. The core roads become crowded on holidays, so do not drive directly between Jichuan Gate and Diantou Street.
Walking Jichuan Gate, the old city wall, Diantou Street, and Sanyuan Pavilion takes about 2-3 hours. A full day can add Wolong Academy, Hakka Eight Happiness Building, Dafudi, and the Ting River night cruise, but keep the daytime paid venues and the evening boat ticket separate.

Gate tower, city wall, and old street
The most worthwhile parts of the old city are the city wall beside the Ting River, Jichuan Gate, and Diantou Street. Jichuan Gate works well as the city landmark, and climbing it gives a view toward the Ting River. The wall follows the river and is the main section for an evening walk. Diantou Street is known for its stone-slab road and old houses along the street, while Sanyuan Pavilion is a useful landmark and public square on the south side.
The wall, old street, and Sanyuan Pavilion are different experiences. The wall suits river and city views, Diantou Street suits a slow street walk, and Sanyuan Pavilion suits orientation and a short stop. Do not compress them into one straight line of photographs.
One-day and two-day combinations
A one-day route can start with Wolong Academy in the morning, then visit the museum, Confucian temple, or Sanyuan Pavilion around midday. In the afternoon, walk through Diantou Street and Hakka Eight Happiness Building, then continue to Taiping Corridor Bridge and Shuidong Street before arranging the Ting River night cruise in the evening. Each section has its own entrance and ticket; similar order does not mean one ticket covers them all.
A two-day, one-night plan suits a first visit. On the first day, cover the old city, academy, and Hakka Eight Happiness Building, then take the river cruise in the evening. On the second day, go to Dingwuling. Dingwuling is only about 30 minutes from the county town, but return vehicles are scarce. Arrange it separately rather than treating it as a small stop tacked onto the old city.
Who this suits
The old city suits visitors interested in Hakka history, historic streets, local food, and a slow city walk. It also works for families with older adults or children. The wall and riverside sections include steps, wet surfaces, and water edges, so plan the walking according to the group's energy.
Build your day
A 2-3 hour quick route
First go to Jichuan Gate and check whether the wall climb needs a separate ticket. Walk a section of the Tingzhou city wall, return to Diantou Street, and finish at Sanyuan Pavilion. If you only use the free streets, the three points can be connected on foot. If you want the wall climb, treat it as the first separate paid item.
This route suits using the old city as a half-day stop after arriving by high-speed rail. Do not run along the wall to save time, and do not stay so long in Diantou Street that the later transfer becomes tight.
An approximately 1-day complete route
Start with Wolong Academy in the morning. Depending on what is open that day, choose Changting Museum or the Confucian temple next, then continue through Sanyuan Pavilion into Diantou Street. In the afternoon, see Hakka Eight Happiness Building or Dafudi. Toward evening, walk Taiping Corridor Bridge and Shuidong Street, then board the Ting River night cruise from its pier.
This day passes several paid or reserved items in succession. List the academy, Hakka Eight Happiness Building, Dafudi, wall climb, and cruise ticket separately, and confirm each one's last-entry time and ticket coverage. Do not record only a single "old city combination ticket."
Two days, one night, and Dingwuling
On the first day, stay in the old city and take the Ting River cruise in the evening. If you go to Dingwuling on the second day, arrange the return driver before entering the village and try to arrive in daylight. Dingwuling has no reliable ride-hailing return, so do not leave the return to Changting South Station for a last-minute evening solution.
If you do not have your own car and cannot find a confirmed return, keep the first day's old-city plan and leave Dingwuling for a separate trip.
Get there
Changting South Station to the old city
From Changting South Station, bus routes 1 and 2 enter the old city for about CNY 2. A taxi takes about 15 minutes. Choose your destination according to the first stop of the day: go toward Sanyuan Pavilion for the academy, or toward Jichuan Gate for the city wall.
The old-city sights are close together and can be reached on foot. Shared e-bikes can also be used, but only for short transfers inside the old city. Do not use them across stations or through crowded lanes such as Diantou Street.
Driving and movement inside the old city
Drivers should navigate to a car park outside the old city. On holidays, prefer the outer north or south car park first, then walk or use a shared e-bike into the core. There is usually some distance between the car park and the old-city entrance. If you have a lot of luggage, decide the drop-off point first and do not drive into a narrow lane looking for a space.
The night cruise, Jichuan Gate climb, and academy can all be reached on foot, but some lanes have different lighting and surfaces at night. Walk along main streets and public riverside paths. Do not enter residential lanes without an open-access sign.
Know before you go
Ticket boundaries and opening conditions
The old-city streets are open all day. Paid venues are usually open from roughly 8:30-17:30, while the Ting River night cruise and Jichuan Gate night views are evening products with different hours. A common combination ticket may include Jichuan Gate, Wolong Academy, Hakka Eight Happiness Building, and Dafudi for about CNY 68-98, but the exact combination, validity, and child rules depend on the product notice that day.
Buying a combination ticket does not mean every venue can be entered. If an exhibition closes temporarily, a show is not scheduled, or the cruise is cancelled for weather, the combination ticket cannot automatically replace another item and does not automatically guarantee a refund.
Gate tower, riverside, and night safety
The old city wall, Jichuan Gate, Taiping Corridor Bridge, and Ting River bank include steps, narrow paths, or water edges. Hold children's hands when the area is crowded at night. Do not sit on the battlements, climb over barriers, or walk to an unlit water edge. When taking night photographs, stand in a stable position first and do not crowd the edge of steps or a bridge for a shot.
On holidays, Diantou Street and the wall can be extremely crowded. With older adults or children, avoid the busiest night-market period, and do not compress the wall climb, night view, and train departure into the final 30 minutes.
Food and time buffers
Shuidong Street, Diantou Street, and the surrounding lanes have food outlets, but their hours, prices, and styles vary widely. When you want to eat, look at the menu and queue first, then decide how long to stay based on the next sight and return time.
Boiled Hetian chicken, pig kidney soup, taro dumplings, and boji ban are common local foods, although preparation and flavour differ. Do not treat one shop or one fixed price as a guarantee, and do not let the search for a restaurant make you late for a cruise you have already bought.
