Entrance, exit and visit length
Nanjing Museum is at 321 Zhongshan East Road. Look for the main entrance marked “Nanjing Museum”; it is a different place from other venues using the name “Nanjing Museum” in English or Chinese. Entry is through the History Hall and the final exit is through the Art Museum. Allow 2–3 hours for the core route or 4–5 hours for all six halls.
Admission is free, but real-name reservation is required. The usual hours are Tuesday–Sunday 09:00–17:00, with final entry at 16:00; Mondays are generally closed, along with New Year’s Eve and the first day of the Lunar New Year, subject to holiday arrangements.
Summer hours and reservation
From July 1 to August 30, the museum usually stays open until 20:00 from Sunday to Thursday, with final entry at 19:00, and until 21:00 on Friday and Saturday, with final entry at 20:00. If you plan a night visit, build the route around the entry time shown in the reservation system.
Reservations usually open seven days ahead at 18:00 each day, and holiday availability is limited. Secure the reservation before planning your route or dinner; do not rely on finding a remaining ticket after arrival.

A 2–3 hour core route
The History Hall covers Jiangsu’s history from early periods through the Ming and Qing dynasties. The Special Exhibition Hall changes with its exhibition schedule, while the Republic of China Hall recreates streets, a railway station, a post office and shops from the Republican period. For a first visit, make these three halls the core.
Halls 2–4 in the History Hall are usually important sections, and the Republic of China Hall suits photography and an easier walk. Some signature pieces may be on loan, rotated or under maintenance, so treat individual objects as possibilities rather than building the whole visit around a fixed list.
A 4–5 hour six-hall route
With more time, start at the History Hall, then visit the Special Exhibition Hall, Digital Hall, Republic of China Hall, Art Museum and Intangible Cultural Heritage Hall. The Digital Hall offers interactive displays, while the Art Museum and Intangible Cultural Heritage Hall add more walking and suit visitors interested in both exhibitions and architecture.
The museum is large, and walking speed changes with the crowd and exhibition layout. With older relatives or children, keep the History Hall and one specialist hall, then decide whether to continue with all six.
Build your day
A 2–3 hour route without backtracking
Enter through the History Hall, visit the History Hall first, then the Special Exhibition Hall and the Republic of China Hall for photos and exhibits. This gives you the main content in half a day without a complicated route.
The final exit is through the Art Museum. Check whether you have reached the final exit before leaving; once you scan out, re-entry is generally not possible.
A 4–5 hour six-hall route
Start with the first and second floors of the History Hall, then continue to the Special Exhibition Hall, the Digital Hall on the basement level and the Republic of China Hall underground. Finish with the Art Museum and Intangible Cultural Heritage Hall, leaving through the Art Museum exit. Follow the day’s museum signs if a hall changes its opening arrangement.
Free official talks are usually offered around 10:00 and 14:00 and require an early queue. Electronic audio guides cost about CNY 20 each; include the waiting time if you want a talk.
Get there
Walking from Minggugong Station
Take Metro Line 2 to Minggugong Station, Exit 1, and walk east along Zhongshan East Road for about 10 minutes to the main entrance. Bus routes 5, 34 and 36 stop at Zhongshan Gate, followed by a walk to the museum.
After leaving the metro, follow Zhongshan East Road to Nanjing Museum rather than another venue with a similar name. At the entrance, complete the reservation and ID check before entering the History Hall.
Driving and breaks inside
The museum has an underground car park at about CNY 4 per hour, but spaces are limited, so the metro is more reliable for a timed visit. Large luggage can be stored at the visitor centre to the left of the entrance; organise bags and water before going inside.
There is a teahouse in the Republic of China Hall and a café on the fifth floor of the Special Exhibition Hall. During a longer visit, use one of these areas for a short break before continuing towards the Art Museum exit.
Know before you go
Reservations, exhibits and entry
Tickets are released at 18:00 seven days ahead, and availability is tight during holidays and summer. Reserve all companions in advance. A reservation secures entry, while specific exhibitions and individual objects can still change with the display schedule.
The History Hall and Republic of China Hall can become crowded at peak times, and popular rooms may require a queue. Arrive early or use the summer evening hours if available, but work backwards from the final entry time shown for that day.
Water, storage and nearby areas
The museum provides storage and guiding services, but the storage area and final exit are not in the same place, so leave time to collect your belongings. A 4–5 hour visit involves a lot of standing and walking; wear comfortable shoes and take breaks.
After leaving, walk to Ming Palace Ruins Park or take the metro to 1912. Kechang and Hongmiao are also useful areas for Nanjing snacks. Keep these stops after the museum exit, because leaving midway can prevent re-entry.
