Choose the entrance and ticket

The main visit at Niushou Mountain centres on Foding Palace, Foding Pagoda and Foding Temple. The East Gate is at the foot of the mountain and has better facilities and parking, but reaching the core area requires a sightseeing bus and more walking. The West Gate is halfway up the mountain and suits visitors who want to reduce the climb.

Allow 2–3 hours for a quick East Gate route or 3.5–4 hours for the West Gate route. The usual hours are 08:30–17:30, with final entry at 16:30. During the summer activity period through August 31, Friday and Saturday night sessions may run until 20:30; confirm the day’s arrangement.

Admission and sightseeing buses

An adult ticket costs about CNY 145 when bought online one day ahead and about CNY 160 on the day or at the site. A discounted student or senior ticket is about CNY 80, and postgraduate students can use the eligible discount. Children under 1.4 metres and visitors aged 70 and above usually enter free; use the official account, Meituan or Ctrip to buy through a reputable channel.

The East Gate sightseeing bus costs about CNY 20 per person for unlimited rides on the day; the West Gate route costs about CNY 10. On special free-entry days, the attraction may require every visitor to reserve and enter with an ID check, so confirm tickets and night-session arrangements separately.

Indoor displays at Foding Palace

Foding Palace includes the ground-level Chan Realm Grand View and the underground palace. The visit focuses on the building, light installations, the reclining Buddha and the Thousand-Buddha Hall. The underground palace extends five levels below ground; visitors need shoe covers to enter and flash photography is prohibited.

A rotating reclining Buddha performance is usually held at 10:30 and 15:00 each day. The reclining Buddha rises and lowers slowly around the performance. Confirm the day’s show time before deciding how long to spend in the other areas of Foding Palace.

Foding Pagoda, Foding Temple and photo positions

Foding Pagoda provides a higher view of the mountain, while Foding Temple works well after the palace. The pool beside Foding Palace is useful for reflections of the building and pagoda, and the semi-outdoor corridor offers light and shadow for portraits. The small balcony on the fourth underground level can require a queue; choose another position if it is too crowded.

Niushou Mountain suits visitors interested in Buddhist art, modern religious architecture and photography. Dress respectfully and follow the no-flash and quiet-space instructions inside the religious areas.

Build your day

A 2–3 hour East Gate route

Enter through the East Gate, buy a sightseeing-bus ticket and ride to Tianque Station. After getting off, take the long escalator uphill and go directly to Foding Palace. Visit the reclining Buddha and underground palace, photograph the exterior of Foding Pagoda, then take the bus back down and leave.

This route suits visitors with limited time who want the main attractions. The route from the East Gate to the core is long, so leave time for the bus queue; do not plan to complete it entirely on foot.

A 3.5–4 hour West Gate route

Enter through the West Gate, buy the sightseeing-bus ticket and ride to the core area. Visit Foding Palace for about 1.5–2 hours, then spend about 30 minutes climbing Foding Pagoda before continuing to Foding Temple and returning to the West Gate by bus or on foot.

The West Gate reduces the uphill walking, but a taxi may stop at the car park rather than the actual entrance. Confirm the drop-off point and shuttle stop with the driver, and leave time to return from the core area to the West Gate.

Get there

Metro and bus

For either gate, take Metro Line 1 or the S1 line to Tianlongsi Station and transfer to a bus. Routes 712 and 755 are options for the East Gate, while routes 710 and G72 serve the West Gate; confirm the day’s bus stop and arrival point before leaving.

A taxi from Nanjing South Railway Station to the East Gate takes about 25 minutes. On weekends and holidays, direct tourist buses may run from P1 at Nanjing South Railway Station and Lukou Airport to the East Gate; buy on site and confirm the departure.

Parking and West Gate navigation

Parking is easier at the East Gate, with more spaces and a fee of about CNY 4 per hour. If you drive to the East Gate, transfer to the sightseeing bus after parking so the route stays manageable.

The West Gate is close to the core area, but ride-hailing cars and taxis may be directed only to the car park. Confirm “West Gate entrance” or the actual drop-off point with the driver, then follow the shuttle signs from the car park.

Know before you go

Performances, reservations and religious spaces

The reclining Buddha performance is usually at 10:30 and 15:00, so arrange the Foding Palace route around the show if you want to see it. The Buddha’s skull relic is usually displayed for worship only on selected dates such as New Year’s Day, the Spring Festival and National Day; ordinary visits should not be planned around seeing it.

The underground palace requires shoe covers and prohibits flash photography. Niushou Mountain includes religious spaces, so avoid camisoles and very short skirts and follow the etiquette notices in Foding Palace, Foding Temple and other worship areas.

Queues, food and weather

Queues may form for the East Gate sightseeing bus, the Foding Palace elevator and the underground photo position, especially on weekends and holidays. Mountain sunlight and temperature can change quickly in summer; carry water and sun protection, and wear comfortable shoes. The West Gate saves climbing but still involves sustained walking in the core area.

Tianque Vegetarian Noodles near the Foding Palace exit is a practical meal and rest stop. Jinling Town–Yanji Li is next to the west side of the scenic area; if you want to continue there the same day, confirm its hours and tickets separately.
