Plan at a glance
Area and time
The main route begins at the Bo’ai Archway and continues through the “The World Is for All” Gate, the Stele Pavilion and the Memorial Hall, ending with views over Nanjing and Zhongshan Mountain. Allow about 1–1.5 hours for a direct visit; combining Music Stage, Meiling Palace and Wutong Avenue on the same day requires 3–4 hours.
Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum is free but requires a real-name reservation. It usually opens Tuesday–Sunday from 08:30–17:00, with final entry at 17:00; it closes on Mondays except for public holidays and Sun Yat-sen’s commemorative dates.
The visit boundary
The 392 steps form the main physical challenge on the central axis and lead to the Memorial Hall. The hall contains a marble seated statue of Sun Yat-sen, but photography is prohibited indoors. The tomb chamber is currently not open to visitors, so plan around the Bo’ai Archway, central axis and Memorial Hall.
Visitors interested in modern Chinese history and architecture can walk the complete axis. With older relatives or children, use the sightseeing bus to reach the entrance and decide how far to climb according to everyone’s energy.

From the Bo’ai Archway to the Memorial Hall
The Bo’ai Archway is the usual entrance and the start of the central axis. Walking through the “Bo’ai” Archway, the “The World Is for All” Gate, the Stele Pavilion and the Memorial Hall lets you see the building sequence and the changing slope of the steps.
If time is limited, keep the central axis and Memorial Hall. After reaching the top, look over Nanjing and the surrounding mountain scenery, then return along the same route; the full visit takes about 1–1.5 hours.
Combining Music Stage and Meiling Palace
Music Stage is beside Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum and takes about 5–10 minutes to reach on foot. Admission is about CNY 10 and it works well as a short stop after the mausoleum. Meiling Palace can follow as the next stop, with about 1–2 hours for the main building, glazed corridor and sycamore walk.
This combination suits first-time Zhongshan Mountain visitors who want modern history and landscape in one day. Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum can also be added, but the area is spread out and requires sightseeing-bus transfers and more time.
Build your day
A 1–1.5 hour direct route
Enter through the Bo’ai Archway, follow the central axis through the “The World Is for All” Gate, the Stele Pavilion and the Memorial Hall, pause for the city view and return along the same route. Confirm your reservation and entry direction before reaching the steps rather than handling tickets at the foot of the climb.
This route works for short schedules or days with other Zhongshan Mountain attractions. The steps are continuous, so keep your own pace and take breaks when needed instead of trying to match a tour group.
A 3–4 hour Zhongshan combination
In the morning, take the metro to Xiamafang or Xiaolingwei and transfer to a sightseeing bus for Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum. After the central-axis visit, walk about 5–10 minutes to Music Stage, then take the bus to Meiling Palace and leave towards Muxuyuan.
If you want to walk along Wutong Avenue, do so after Meiling Palace towards Muxuyuan Station. Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum is better treated as a separate half-day addition; if you add it on the same day, allow time for the sightseeing-bus queue before the mausoleum.
Get there
Choosing a metro station
Muxuyuan Station is useful for Wutong Avenue and the Ming Xiaoling side. Xiamafang Station is near the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum parking area and Music Stage. Xiaolingwei Station is often less crowded and has a sightseeing-bus stop outside, which is useful for families with older relatives or children.
The metro-and-sightseeing-bus combination reduces the amount of uphill walking. A sightseeing bus costs about CNY 10 for one ride or CNY 30 for an unlimited day pass, with stops at the metro stations and main attractions; you may still need to walk from the stop to the Bo’ai Archway.
Driving and parking
Possible parking references include the Zhongshan Sports Park car park and Dongyuan Hotel car park, but spaces vary by time. Core roads may have traffic controls after around 08:00–09:00, so driving is not the preferred option on busy days.
Unofficial motorbike or car offers outside the scenic area may not take visitors to the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum entrance. Use an official sightseeing bus or a licensed taxi, and confirm the drop-off point before boarding.
Know before you go
Reservation release and Monday closure
Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum usually releases reservations seven days ahead at 16:00 each day. Summer and weekend slots can fill quickly; if same-day reservations remain after 17:00, they should be treated as a backup rather than the main plan.
The mausoleum usually closes on Mondays, while public holidays and special commemorative dates may have different arrangements. Bring the documents required for real-name entry and follow the reservation verification process at the gate.
Steps, water and photography
The central route has a long, continuous staircase, so wear comfortable sports shoes and use sun protection. Food and drinks inside the scenic area may be expensive, so carry water; photography is prohibited inside the Memorial Hall and the interior notices take priority.
Keep quiet and avoid stopping in the middle of the steps. For visitors with limited energy, make Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum the first stop of the day, then use the sightseeing bus to reach Music Stage or Meiling Palace.
