Plan at a glance

Ticket, scope and opening hours

The Former Residence of Chiang Kai-shek is in Xikou Town, Fenghua. Its town heritage route includes Wuling Gate, Fenghao House, Yutai Salt Shop and Wenchang Pavilion. The reference price for the single-area combination ticket is CNY 120; confirm the exact ticket type and included sites at the time of purchase. Summer hours are usually 8:00–17:30 and winter hours 8:30–17:00, with entry ending earlier.

Entrance and visit time

Wuling Gate is a practical starting point for the town heritage route, and the buildings along Wuling Road can be connected on foot. Walking through Wuling Gate, Wenchang Pavilion, the Small Western-style House, Fenghao House and Yutai Salt Shop usually takes about 2–3 hours. Allow half a day if you want to examine the buildings and displays slowly.

What kind of visit this is

This is a town walk combining historic architecture, local modern history and indoor visits. The sites are spread along streets, so you will alternate between outdoor walking and indoor rooms. With older travellers or children, include the stone paving, steps and rest stops in your route.

Choose your visit

Wuling Gate and the town setting

Wuling Gate is the clearest landmark at the start of the town route. From the upper level, you can look across the Yanxi River and the town. Wuling Road, Wenchang Pavilion and the riverside buildings form a continuous heritage walk; first understand the wider setting, then enter the individual residences.

Fenghao House and Yutai Salt Shop

Fenghao House is one of the main residences on the route and shows the front-hall and rear-hall layout of a Jiangnan home. Yutai Salt Shop represents the family’s early domestic and commercial setting. The current condition of the buildings and which rooms are open depend on the on-site visit scope.

Wenchang Pavilion and the Small Western-style House

Wenchang Pavilion stands beside the Yanxi River, while the Small Western-style House is another riverside residence. Both are good places to slow down and look at the relationship between the buildings and the water. Follow indoor photography rules and do not enter closed, repaired or resident-use areas for a better viewpoint.

Build your day

The 2–3-hour route with minimal backtracking

Start near Xikou Museum or Wuling Gate, then visit Wuling Gate, Wenchang Pavilion, the Small Western-style House, Fenghao House and Yutai Salt Shop before leaving along the town streets. The order may change with same-day access, but confirm the entrance and exit first so you do not repeatedly cross the stone-paved streets.

A half-day heritage visit

Complete the main residences in the morning, then continue walking through the public streets of Xikou or visit an independent venue such as Xikou Museum in the afternoon. Nearby streets, exhibition spaces and residences do not share one opening rule; follow the signs at each entrance.

Pairing it with Xuedou Mountain over two days

If you also want to visit Xuedou Mountain, the more comfortable plan is to complete the Former Residence and Xikou town on day one, then go to SanYinTan, Qianzhang Rock or Miaogao Platform on day two. The two areas can be part of one Xikou trip, but the residence ticket, mountain ticket and temple visit must be counted separately.

Get there

Parking and walking in town

By car, search for the underground parking at Wuling Square or Xinan Parking, then walk into the heritage area. Parking capacity, fees and holiday traffic controls follow the on-site arrangement. The town sites are close enough to walk between, so an informal short-distance ride should not be treated as necessary.

High-speed rail and buses

The transfer from Fenghua Station to Xikou takes about 40 minutes by the reference route, using a car or another transfer. You can also enter the town from Xikou Station. Bus routes 987 and 988 are possible options to Xikou; actual departures and drop-off points depend on the day’s service.

Moving around the town

Wuling Gate, Wenchang Pavilion, the Small Western-style House, Fenghao House and Yutai Salt Shop are mainly connected on foot. Stone paving is slippery in rain, so wear shoes with good grip. If you must continue to the mountain or catch a train, leave time to exit the town route from the beginning.

Know before you go

Ticket types and open rooms

Single-site tickets, combination tickets, concession tickets and online products may cover different attractions. Confirm the included sites before paying. Rooms, displays and repaired areas within the Former Residence may change temporarily, and the current open area takes priority over a pre-set itinerary.

Etiquette and photography

The Former Residence is a historic-building visit. Indoor photography, flash use and access around barriers follow the on-site rules. Do not touch displays or cross guardrails, and avoid blocking residents or staff while taking outdoor photographs.

Walking comfort

The town route works better at a steady pace than as a rushed checklist. Flat, comfortable shoes suit the stone paving; protect yourself from the summer sun and slow down in rain. If someone in your group has limited mobility, reduce the number of indoor stops and keep to flatter sections.
