Plan at a glance

An open mudflat and the core experience

Beiqi Mudflat is in Beiqi Village, Songgang Subdistrict, Xiapu County, Ningde, Fujian, about 5 km from Xiapu County town. The Beiqi Mudflat parking lot is a commonly used entrance. Entry is free and there is no central ticket gate. The main experience is around sunrise, but the exact arrival time should be planned around that day's sunrise, tide, weather, and road conditions.

The main view is the mudflat, fishing boats, fish pens, and seaweed racks seen from the viewing platform, followed by a closer look at the patterns from the mudflat boardwalk when it is open and safe. This is not a photography site where the same scene appears at a fixed time every day. A rising tide, rain, or heavy fog can change the actual view.

Time needed and who it suits

Allow about 2 hours for the main viewing platform and nearby boardwalk. If you also want Huazhu Village, Shajiang S Bay, or Dongbi Village, count each as a separate transport leg. This suits photographers and visitors willing to get up early and wait for suitable weather and tide conditions; it does not suit anyone who needs the final photo to be guaranteed.

The village entrance roads are narrow, and the viewing platform and hillside involve walking uphill. With older adults, young children, or large photography equipment, judge the parking location and walking distance in advance. If needed, plan only the main viewing platform.

Choose your visit

Tiger-skin mudflat patterns and the viewing platform

After the tide recedes, the mudflat may show curved patterns, seaweed racks, and fishing boats together. The main viewing platform is best for the overall composition, while the mudflat boardwalk is for observing closer patterns when it is open and safe. The visible area depends on the tide and weather.

Some places on the hillside offer views of fishermen at work, but do not walk onto unmarked paths to look for a supposed hidden viewpoint. Keep the viewing platform, official boardwalk, and village roads as your main activity area.

Who it suits

This is suitable for long-lens photography, sunrise observation, and visitors interested in working coastal landscapes. Anyone who does not adapt well to early mornings, sea wind, or waiting can make Beiqi a short stop rather than extending the route just to catch one tide.

Ask politely before photographing fishermen, boats, or aquaculture facilities. Seaweed racks, fish pens, and aquaculture areas may be private working spaces; do not step on or cross them for a better angle.

Build your day

A short platform-and-boardwalk route

After arriving, get out at an official parking location and go first to the main viewing platform to assess the weather and tide. If the mudflat boardwalk is open and the surface is safe, continue closer to see the patterns, then return to the village entrance. Treat walking onto the mudflat itself as optional, not required.

The key is not a fixed number of minutes at each point, but leaving room to adjust for sunrise, tide, and visitor flow. When fog is heavy, wind is strong, the path is slippery, or the mudflat is still covered, waiting at the viewing platform or returning is better than going onto the mudflat.

A half-day photography combination

Place Beiqi early in the morning, return to Xiapu County town for a meal, and then continue to Huazhu Village, Shajiang S Bay, or Dongbi Village if the weather is suitable. Each location has its own sunrise, sunset, and tide pattern; do not apply Beiqi's early-morning conditions to an afternoon coast.

If you use a tripod, telephoto lens, or other heavy equipment, allow time to walk from the village entrance to the viewing platform. During holiday congestion, choose an official car park outside the village rather than driving a narrow lane just to reduce the walk.

A two-day regional plan

A fuller plan could put Beiqi early on the first morning, followed by Shajiang S Bay or Dongbi Village according to the transport plan. Consider Yangjiaxi, Xiawei Island, or another coastal location on the second day. Confirm the roads, tide, and return travel for each leg separately; this does not mean all these places can be collected easily in one day.

Beiqi works well as one clearly defined morning stop. If the weather or tide is unsuitable, cancel later mudflat photography promptly rather than using a last-minute charter boat or private guide to compensate.

Get there

High-speed rail, taxi, and bus

From Xiapu Station, a taxi to Beiqi Village usually takes about 15–20 minutes and commonly costs CNY 20–30. You can also take bus Route 5 from Xiapu County town, or a small bus toward Songshan, and get off at the entrance to Beiqi Village.

Public transport works better for daytime trips, but confirm early-morning departures and waiting conditions in advance. If you plan to arrive before sunrise, do not assume that a regular bus will connect in time; arrange a legal vehicle or choose accommodation from which the trip is practical.

Driving and parking

You can navigate to “Beiqi Mudflat Parking Lot.” The road into the village is narrow and can jam during holidays. If you are not comfortable with the road or traffic is concentrated, park at an official lot outside the village and walk to the viewing platform.

After parking outside the village, you will usually still walk uphill. Allow about 15 minutes or more. Do not park at a roadside location offered by private touts, and do not drive into residential, aquaculture, or fire-access lanes.

Know before you go

Tide, weather, and boat touts

Mudflat patterns are often clearer after the tide goes out, but low-tide times cannot be treated as fixed by clock time or season. Check tide and weather trends before leaving, then use the actual water level, visibility, and open boundary on site.

People may approach visitors at the village entrance offering boat rides or temporary photography services. Beiqi's main experience does not require a private boat. Do not board at the last minute in heavy fog, strong wind, or poor weather, and do not change your plan because of a verbal price change.

Clothing, supplies, and working areas

The coast can be windy and feel cold early in the morning. Bring a windproof jacket, drinking water, and simple food. Nearby supplies are limited, so carry cameras and tripods as lightly as possible and avoid blocking narrow paths.

Do not step on the mudflat, seaweed racks, or fish pens, and do not enter aquaculture areas without permission. Ask before photographing fishermen at close range. Without clear permission, use a long lens from a distance or skip the photo.
