Confirm the island crossing and return
Meizhou Island is in Xiuyu District, Putian, Fujian. Wenjia Pier is the usual and only passenger-ferry pier for reaching the island. From Putian High-Speed Railway Station, take Bus K09 or 363 to Wenjia Pier; the journey takes about 50 minutes, followed by a ferry crossing of about 15-20 minutes.
Ferries usually operate between 7:00 and 17:30, but services differ between the low and high seasons. Do not treat this range as a fixed last-ferry time for every day. Confirm both the outbound and return sailings before leaving; if you miss the return ferry, you will need to stay overnight on the island.
Ticket layers and time needed
The adult island admission pass is CNY 125 and includes the return ferry and the CNY 65 island-entry ticket. Students and visitors aged 60-64 pay half price. Advance purchase through the “Meizhou Island Ferry” mini-program is recommended, and boarding should follow the identity information used for the ticket. The pass does not mean that every attraction, performance, island transfer, or separately operated paid activity is free; check the product scope for the day.
A visit focused on the core area usually takes about 6-8 hours. First-time visitors who also want the ancestral temple, coast, and island transport should allow two days and one night. Island attractions are generally open throughout the day, but individual scenic areas, religious spaces, and performances may have different opening or entry conditions.

Cultural core and coastal scenery
Meizhou Island works best when you choose between its Mazu cultural core and coastal scenery rather than trying to cover everything at once. Mazu Ancestral Temple is for a mountain-facing, sea-facing religious complex, while Mazu Cultural Park focuses on the Mazu statue, exhibitions, and seaside viewpoints. They are adjacent but are not the same visitor attraction.
If you prefer natural scenery, make Ewei Rock Park, Lianchiao Beach, or Meiyu Tide Sound your main stop. Ewei Rock Park is a stepped, exposed sea-eroded-rock route; Lianchiao is an open beach; and Meiyu Tide Sound should be visited from the upper northern viewpoints, not by following old guides toward the seaside boardwalk that has already been removed.
One day or two
A 6-8-hour day can focus on Wenjia Pier, Mazu Ancestral Temple, and Mazu Cultural Park, then add Golden Beach or Ewei Rock Park according to time, with a buffer for the return ferry. Do not force the northern coast, southern rocks, and cultural core into one day simply to check off every attraction; island transfers, sun, tides, and return timing add uncertainty.
Two days and one night suit first-time visitors better. The first day can cover the temple, Cultural Park, and Rainbow Road or the Lianchiao area; choose Ewei Rock Park or Meiyu Tide Sound on the second day. If you add a performance, check its showtime and late return conditions separately. Do not assume it shares a ticket with daytime attractions.
Who this suits
The island suits visitors interested in Mazu belief, island culture, sea-eroded landforms, and island cycling. It also works for families with children or older adults who are willing to slow down. Temple steps, strong sun by the sea, waves, and e-bike sections affect physical planning, so choose the number of stops and transport method according to the group.
Build your day
One-day order for the cultural core
After arriving on Meizhou Island, confirm the return ferry and island transport first, then visit Mazu Ancestral Temple and Mazu Cultural Park. They are close enough to visit consecutively, but treat the temple's worship and historic architectural spaces separately from the park's exhibitions, statue, and seaside viewpoints.
After the cultural core, choose Golden Beach, Lianchiao Beach, Ewei Rock Park, or Meiyu Tide Sound according to the remaining time and weather. Check the tide, waves, and safety notices before going to the coast. If the sea conditions or your energy are unsuitable, stay at a viewpoint, upper path, or safe beach area rather than approaching rocks or low coastal surfaces.
Two days and one night
Use the first day for the temple and Cultural Park, with a light transfer around Rainbow Road or Lianchiao. Choose one coastal line on the second day, then move toward Wenjia Pier early. Do not place the final attraction immediately before the expected last ferry.
If you attend an island performance, confirm the venue, ticket, and finishing time separately. Do not assume a return ferry will still be available after a late show. If the return conditions cannot be confirmed, stay overnight on the island or skip the late show rather than rushing for the boat.
Island movement and the return
Island Bus 3 and other buses are available, and shared e-bikes may also be rented. E-bikes cost about CNY 50-80 per day and sightseeing buses about CNY 2 per ride. Frequency, road congestion, and rental conditions affect actual travel time. With older adults or children, buses and short walks may be the better choice.
Before returning, allow time to transfer from the attraction to the pier, queue, and absorb possible schedule changes. Ordinary private cars cannot board the ferry to the island. Drivers should park at the official Wenjia Pier parking area and keep the mainland parking plan separate from island transport.

High-speed rail, buses, and the ferry
From Putian Station to Wenjia Pier, take Bus K09 or 363. The fare is about CNY 9 and the ride takes about 50 minutes. At Wenjia Pier, board the passenger ferry according to the day's ticket and boarding instructions; the crossing takes about 15-20 minutes.
The ferry is the transport boundary for a Meizhou Island trip. Sailings change with season, passenger flow, and operations. When planning ahead, check the outbound sailing, return sailing, and latest acceptable arrival time on the island rather than relying on one fixed timetable.
Driving and island transport
Navigate to Wenjia Pier. Private cars cannot go onto the island, so leave them in the official pier parking area; parking costs about CNY 10-30 per day according to the on-site sign. Park first, then walk to complete the ferry procedures. Do not look for unofficial solicited parking around the pier.
After disembarking, use island buses or rent an e-bike if the day's conditions allow. Some roads may be congested during holidays, and parking near attractions is limited. An e-bike does not mean every coastal route can be joined into an easy loop; adjust promptly for closures, standing water, strong winds, or crowds.
Know before you go
Weather, tides, and coastal safety
There is little shade on Meizhou Island's coast, and both ultraviolet exposure and sea wind can be strong. Bring sun protection, sunglasses, a hat, and a light jacket. Sea-eroded rocks, wet steps, rock edges, and coastal paths can cause falls or pull visitors into waves, so follow all barriers and safety notices.
The old seaside boardwalk at Meiyu Tide Sound was removed for safety reasons. Use only the existing viewing pavilion and upper paths. Swimming is unsuitable at Niutouwei Beach near Meiyu Tide Sound, and low rocks at Ewei Rock Park must remain off-limits during a rising tide or closure. Cancel the coastal stop when tide and waves are unsuitable.
Etiquette in religious spaces
The ancestral temple is an active religious space. A ticket or open gate does not authorise entry to every hall, room, or area. Dress appropriately, keep quiet, do not use flash, do not touch images or offerings, and do not cross barriers or enter restricted areas. Follow on-site rules before taking photos.
Large crowds and temporary controls may occur during holidays, the first and fifteenth days of the lunar month, and Mazu's birthday. Ritual content, entry order, and open areas cannot be guaranteed in advance. Do not treat special ceremonies, free routes, or merchant arrangements in visitor guides as fixed services.
Food and time buffer
You can choose local food on the island, but do not treat a particular shop, preparation method, or fixed price as an itinerary guarantee. Check the menu and price before eating, then set the stop according to the ferry. Travel time between food and attractions also belongs in your return buffer.
Visitor numbers usually rise sharply around Mazu's birthday and other festivals. Ferry queues and island traffic can lengthen the day. Even on ordinary dates, enter the core area early and keep a return buffer that does not depend on catching the last ferry by luck.
