Choose the right route before you start
For most visitors, Xiutong Trail up and Dengyun Trail down is the safest, most balanced combination. It gives you a clean summit push without making the return unnecessarily painful.
Start from Shenwai High School for the most practical ascent
This side is widely seen as the easiest way to begin the climb if your goal is the summit rather than a maximal training route. It also keeps the logistics cleaner for a metro-based day.
Save enough energy for the final summit push
The last steep section is where the route becomes mentally and physically demanding. This is the part that delivers the best sense of accomplishment and the broadest skyline-and-sea view once you break through.
Descend via Dengyun instead of the north-side road
The most common regret is ending up on the wrong descent and being dumped into a poorly connected area with no metro nearby. Going down toward Liantang or Wutongshan South keeps the exit realistic.
✦Bring 1 to 1.5 liters of water plus simple high-energy snacks
✦Buy or carry a trekking pole if you are worried about knees on the descent
✦Do not underestimate the route just because Shenzhen is a coastal city
✦Avoid the hottest midday start unless you are already used to subtropical hiking
✦Stick to the metro-friendly descent plan even if a road down looks easier on the map
