Location and visit time
Shizuishan Museum is at 696 Shiji Avenue (世纪大道) in Dawukou District. Construction began in 2009, and the museum opened to the public in 2013. The building covers about 16,000 square metres, with roughly 8,250 square metres of exhibition space. It is a National Grade III Museum. Its regular displays are housed in three basic exhibition halls and three thematic halls, alongside a temporary exhibition hall. Allow 1–3 hours; the galleries span several floors, so give older visitors time to move between them. First-time visitors and families with children can start with the fossil and Helan Mountain rock-art galleries, then choose the industrial or folk-customs displays that interest them.
Tickets and opening hours
Admission is free. Regular opening hours are Tuesday to Sunday, 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m., with last admission at 4:30 p.m. The museum is normally closed on Mondays. Holiday schedules and temporary changes follow museum notices. Before visiting, confirm whether individual visitors need a reservation or ID verification. Groups and visitors requesting guided tours should contact the museum in advance.

Fossils and rock art
The fossil gallery introduces ancient life and the natural environment of Shizuishan through audiovisual displays. The rock-art gallery presents Helan Mountain rock art through objects, rubbings and images. The fossil displays work well for families; in the rock-art gallery, look at the symbols and what they reveal about the lives of earlier inhabitants.
Everyday life through folk customs
The folk-customs gallery recreates the North–South Street of historic Pingluo (平罗古城南北大街) during the Republic of China period. Its buildings, festivals, social customs and folk arts offer a look at local daily life.
Industry and farming
The industrial gallery uses old equipment, historical materials and objects to trace how coal helped Shizuishan grow into an industrial city. The farming gallery shows the shift from traditional to modern agriculture through tools, photographs and scenes. For a broader view of the city’s modern history, visit the industrial gallery alongside the history and revolution galleries.
For a separate walk among former mining-town streets and film locations, see Shitanjing Industrial Cultural Tourism and Film Town.
For a separate foothill walk and visit to Shoufo Temple, see Dawukou Forest Park.
For a separate lakeside and wetland outing with its own transport arrangements, see Xinghai Lake.
Build your day
1–1.5-hour highlights route
If you have limited time, start on the second floor with the industrial and folk-customs galleries. The first traces the city’s industrial development; the second uses a recreated street scene to show everyday life. Follow the floor guide and any access notices, then return to the introductory hall or exit.
2–3-hour themed route
For a 2–3-hour visit, start with the fossil and rock-art galleries, then follow the museum signs through the history and revolution, farming, industrial and folk-customs galleries. Check which displays are permanent, thematic or temporary. If a gallery has been temporarily rearranged, continue along the route that is open.
Get there
Address and parking
Search for “Shizuishan Museum” (石嘴山市博物馆) or “696 Shiji Avenue” (世纪大道696号) in your map app. The museum is in the Three Museums and One Centre (三馆一中心) district. There is parking on site; follow the signs outside the museum and check the day’s parking location and fee.
City buses and nearby venues
Check current bus information for Routes 1, 3, 6 and 7 (1路、3路、6路、7路) to the “Three Museums and One Centre” stop (三馆一中心站). Stops and schedules may change. Nearby venues, including the science museum, have their own opening hours and activities; check each venue’s access and entry rules if you plan to visit more than one.
Know before you go
Temporary exhibitions and gallery access
Temporary events may affect which galleries are open. Check the notice at the entrance and the floor guide on arrival, then plan around the galleries available that day.
Guided visits and refreshments
Alongside its permanent and thematic displays, the museum holds temporary exhibitions and education activities such as its “Little Docents” programme. Confirm guided-tour availability and activity times for the day. Refreshment options inside are limited, so bring drinking water before entering; follow staff instructions about where you may drink or store it.
Meals after your visit
There are few places to eat near the museum, so you can return to central Dawukou after your visit. For a local hot dish, look for yanggao rou huirou (羊羔肉烩肉), a lamb dish. If you plan to eat near the museum, check which restaurants are open that day.
