Plan at a glance
Entrance and visit time
Shahu Lake Scenic Area is in Pingluo County, Shizuishan, on Yaosha Road (姚沙公路). The South Gate (南门) is the usual entrance; search for “沙湖” in a map app. The desert area lies across the water, so you need to take a boat to reach the main visitor area on the south shore.
Allow about 2–3 hours for the south-shore desert area. The eastern wetlands and Pet Park (萌宠乐园) require the east-side sightseeing-cart route. Some panoramic packages connect this side with Swan Island (天鹅岛) and the desert; check the operating date and return arrangements before you go.
Tickets and opening hours
Shahu has several route and transport combinations. If you are visiting only the south-shore desert area, choose a ticket that includes the relevant round-trip boat service. To visit both the eastern lake area and the south-shore desert, check whether a panoramic package linking the sightseeing cart and boat is available that day. The east-side sightseeing cart can be bought separately, and ticket platforms also list packages with different inclusions. Before buying, confirm the stops, boat sections, return pier and any extra charges; a package name alone does not tell you exactly what is included. Opening and last-entry times vary by season, so check the schedule for your date and whether advance booking is needed.

Wetlands and reeds
The east-side sightseeing route passes Seven-Color Magpie Bridge (七彩鹊桥), Rainbow Boardwalk (彩虹游步道), Birdsong Wetland (鸟语湿地), the 10,000-mu Lotus Garden (万亩荷花园), Pet Park and Shahu Bird Kingdom Learning Center (沙湖鸟国研学馆). A 2023 regional notice required sightseeing-cart tickets to be sold separately from admission; current service, stops and prices can change, so check at the ticket counter. The boardwalk offers close views of the reeds and shoreline, while bird species and numbers vary by season. Swan Island is another east-side stop. Some panoramic packages continue on foot from Pet Park to Swan Island, then by boat to the desert area; check the product’s route and daily operating conditions.
Desert sights and activities
Boats cross the lake to the south-shore desert area, where you can visit Shahu International Sand Sculpture Park (沙湖国际沙雕园) and see the “Shahu” marker on the dunes. From higher ground, you can look back across the lake. Pet Park is on the east-side route, outside the south-shore desert’s walking area.
Sandboarding, camel rides, desert off-road vehicle rides, parasailing over water and jet-ski rides are optional paid activities, separate from basic admission. Check the participation rules on the day, especially for children and older visitors.
Choosing by interest
For wetland and reed scenery, take the east-side sightseeing-cart route. If you prefer desert activities, visit the south shore and choose one activity, such as sandboarding, a camel ride or an off-road vehicle. Families can add Pet Park to the east-side route; check its operating status and fees for the day.
Build your day
2–3-hour short visit
Enter through the South Gate and take the boat included with your ticket to the south shore. Visit the desert area and the Shahu marker, then choose the sand sculpture park or one paid activity before returning on the day’s boat service. Allow about 2–3 hours. Confirm that your ticket covers the return trip and check the last boat.
4–5-hour lake-and-desert route
Some panoramic packages combine the east-side sightseeing-cart route with a boat trip to the desert area, passing Pet Park and Swan Island along the way. Check the available packages for your travel date, including the exact route, transfer points, return pier and last departure. Once in the desert area, you can visit the sand sculpture park, take in the dune views or choose a paid activity if it is operating. Allow about 4–5 hours; the total depends on how long you stay at each stop and how the boat and cart connections line up. If no suitable package is available or the connections are unclear, choose one route with confirmed service instead.
Get there
Driving to the South Gate
From Yinchuan, take the G6 Beijing–Tibet Expressway north, exit at Shahu, then follow Yaosha Road to the South Gate. The drive is about 56 km. The scenic area has a parking lot; check the posted fee on arrival.
Buses and local transport
There is no metro service to Shahu. Published direct-shuttle routes have listed boarding points at Qinglian Square (清廉广场), the south gate of Cultural City (文化城南门) and Xinhua Lian Orange Hotel (新华联橙子酒店), with a journey of about an hour; confirm current service and the boarding point for your date. A seasonal route has also been listed from North Gate Tourism Bus Terminal (北门旅游汽车站). Buses from Dawukou Bus Station (大武口汽车站) pass Shahu, and a Shahu shuttle has been listed from Pingluo West Gate Bus Station (平罗西门车站). Timetables and fares vary, so check the boarding point and return time when you buy a ticket.
Know before you go
Sun and lake wind
The desert area gets strong sun. In summer, avoid staying in direct sun for long between noon and 3 p.m.; bring sun protection and drinking water. The lake breeze can be strong, so pack a light jacket.
Tickets for children and older visitors
Children under 1.2 m are generally exempt from basic admission and standard boat tickets. Visitors aged 60 and over with valid identification generally receive free admission, while boat tickets are usually paid separately. Rules may vary by ticket type, height cutoff and eligible ID. Check the current policy and whether it applies to your chosen boat route and activities before buying.
Food and refreshments
There are few shops inside the scenic area, so bring water and a snack. After leaving, you can look for places to eat in the Qianjin Farm (前进农场) area across from the entrance. Qianjin Farm Big Fish Head Restaurant (前进农场大鱼头专门店) is one named option; check that it is open and review the menu and prices for the day.
