Plan at a glance

Location, lake-and-hill scenery and opening status

Agula Grassland Resort is in Agula Town, Horqin Left Rear Banner, Tongliao. Baiyin Chagan Lake and wetlands lie around Shuanghe'er Mountain. The lake and wetlands do not necessarily have the same visitor access; follow routes officially open to visitors.

The resort closed for winter on October 10, 2026. The notice plans to reopen on May 1, 2027, but the actual opening date depends on a new announcement. During the closure, visitors must not enter without permission.

Tickets and visit time

After the resort reopens, check the price board at the entrance for admission, parking and riding activities, including what each charge covers, before deciding whether to enter.

During the open season, allow about 1–2 hours for a round trip to Shuanghe'er Mountain. If lakeside paths and other areas are open, allow about 3–4 hours. The route depends on protected-area boundaries and the areas open that day.

Choose your visit

Shuanghe'er Mountain and the white Buddhist stupa

Shuanghe'er Mountain is a landmark on the grassland. A Qing dynasty white Buddhist stupa and an ovoo cairn stand at the summit. After the resort reopens, climb only if the mountain path and summit area are clearly open, and follow the marked route there and back.

Before climbing, check the path, weather and physical demands. Do not enter during the closure; after reopening, stay on marked routes open to visitors.

Lake, wetlands and waterbirds

Wetlands and reed beds surround Baiyin Chagan Lake. Spring and autumn may be suitable for observing migratory birds. Birdwatching opportunities, permitted stopping points and path conditions vary with the season and conservation requirements.

Check signs to see whether boardwalks and lakeside viewpoints are open. Walk only on permitted routes; do not enter the water, cross boundary markers or enter restricted areas.

Other activities and on-site arrangements

Horse and camel rides may vary with the season and management arrangements. After reopening, confirm operating hours, routes, age or fitness requirements and prices for each activity before taking part.

If you mainly want to see the grassland and wetlands, plan a walk around viewpoints open that day. If no activity schedule has been published, focus on the open viewing routes.

For a separate protected-area visit with forest trails and seasonal visitor zones, see Daqinggou National Nature Reserve.

Build your day

1–2-hour Shuanghe'er Mountain round trip

Only after the resort has reopened and the hiking route is approved, walk from the designated parking area to Shuanghe'er Mountain. Follow signs to view the stupa and ovoo, then return by the same route. The 1–2-hour estimate excludes travel from central Tongliao.

If weather, trail conditions or on-site management make the climb unsuitable, view the mountain from an approved viewpoint and return to the original parking area. Do not use closed shortcuts.

3–4-hour lake-and-mountain route

After the resort reopens, check the site map and protected-area boundaries first, then follow a lakeside route clearly marked as open. Continue to Shuanghe'er Mountain only if the mountain path and summit area are open.

Allow about 3–4 hours and return to the entrance or parking area you started from. If the wetland or boardwalk is closed, shorten the visit instead of entering a restricted area to complete the route.

Get there

Driving and road conditions

Agula Town is about 70 kilometres from central Tongliao; the actual distance and travel time depend on your navigation destination and road conditions. Before the resort reopens, check the latest notice and confirm the entrance, parking area and where vehicles may go.

Some roads may have gravel or potholes. Slow down on rural roads. During the closure, outside vehicles must not enter without permission; resort staff are exempt. After reopening, follow on-site vehicle rules.

Hired car, public transport and return arrangements

Before taking a bus or coach to this suburban attraction, confirm schedules, stops, connections and the last return service with the carrier. If you cannot arrange transport both ways, book a car in advance and agree on a pick-up point.

If you plan to combine Agula with Daqinggou, first confirm that both sites are open. Check the route and driving time on a map and allow time for the drive between the two attractions and each site’s closing time. You can also return to Tongliao for a meal.

Know before you go

Closure period and wetland access

Before planning a visit, check the current year’s opening notice. During the closure, visitors must not enter without permission; this restriction also applies to outside vehicles. Resort staff are exempt. Do not walk along the lake, climb the mountain or camp in the protected area.

The lake and surrounding wetlands are managed for ecological protection. An open resort does not mean the entire protected area is open to visitors. Follow boundary signs, stay out of the water, do not pick plants or disturb birds, and take your rubbish with you.

Weather, fitness and activity fees

During the open season, the sun can be strong outdoors and temperatures may vary considerably between day and night. Bring sun protection and a windproof layer. Consider your group’s fitness before climbing. Before a riding activity, agree on the route, duration and price.

Admission, parking, riding activities and services inside the resort must all be confirmed after it reopens. Dining, rest areas, photography and accessibility arrangements depend on the new notice and on-site directions.

Dining on the way back

Back in Tongliao, you could have Mongolian hand-grabbed lamb (手把肉) or Mongolian stuffed pancakes (蒙古馅饼). Hajiuhai Mongolian Restaurant and Saiwai Tianrun are city options; navigate to them separately and check whether they are open that day. They are not near the resort.

Agula Town is far from the city. If you plan to have dinner back in Tongliao, confirm the closing time and route that day and allow enough time for the drive.
