Plan at a glance
Site layout and historical background
Xiaozhuang Cultural Tourism Area is in the Huotugula Town area of Horqin Left Middle Banner, Tongliao. It brings together several historical and cultural sites, including the former residence of Empress Dowager Xiaozhuang, Prince Darhan’s Mansion, memorial halls and exhibition buildings. Plan for the area as one attraction.
Empress Dowager Xiaozhuang, born Bumbutai, was from Horqin. The history of Prince Darhan’s Mansion dates back to the Wanli period of the Ming dynasty, but the original buildings no longer survive. The buildings visitors see today were reconstructed after 2008. Treat them as a reconstruction and exhibition space that interprets the historical residence.
Tickets, hours and visit time
Public listings commonly show hours of 08:00–17:30, though operations may change with the weather and last admission may be earlier than closing. Visit earlier in the day and call ahead to confirm opening, last admission and ticket details.
Use about CNY 50 as a reference for an adult ticket. Student discounts, online-ticket offers and whether performances are included depend on the ticket page and the site’s notice that day. Allow about 2 hours for the central-axis highlights, or 3–4 hours to see the main exhibition halls and courtyards in more detail.
Before buying online, visitors using a foreign passport should confirm that the platform supports passport registration and a payment method they can use. If uncertain, call to ask whether tickets can be bought at the site.

Choose your visit
Mansion axis and Yinan Hall
Enter through the mansion gate and ceremonial gate along the central axis to see the courtyards and Yinan Hall. Look at the layout, painted decoration and woodwork of the reconstructed buildings. You can stop for photos in front of or behind Yinan Hall; entry to the hall depends on the signs on site.
This route suits visitors interested in early Qing history, Horqin culture and traditional architecture. Ask about guided tours and any fees after entering.
Xiaozhuang Memorial Hall and Gada Meiren Memorial Hall
The Xiaozhuang Memorial Hall covers her life and Horqin history and is central to understanding the site. Exhibits may include replicas or reconstructions. Read the labels to understand what you are seeing and distinguish reconstructed buildings from surviving historic remains.
The Gada Meiren Memorial Hall and other exhibition spaces are spread along the east and west roads of the mansion area. The number of halls open and their exhibits may change. Check the site map after entering before deciding which ones to visit.
East and west exhibition areas and activities
The Zhasak Office, post station, small mansion garden, Horqin folk exhibits and felt-making workshop are options for a longer visit. Choose based on the map and notices showing what is open that day.
Mongolian robe rental and staged performances may be available, but the programme, times and fees can change. If interested, check the prices, operating hours and venue after entering before adding an activity to your plan.
For a separate grassland visit elsewhere in Horqin Left Middle Banner, see Zhurihe Grassland Tourist Area.
Build your day
About 2-hour central-axis highlights route
Enter through the main entrance open that day. Follow the mansion gate and ceremonial gate to Yinan Hall, then visit the Xiaozhuang Memorial Hall. If a suitable performance is scheduled, you can attend one after confirming its time. Allow about 2 hours in total.
If a gallery or courtyard is temporarily closed, adjust the order to the areas open on site. Before leaving, confirm the shuttle stop and where your vehicle is parked, then follow the signs back.
3–4-hour in-depth exhibition route
Start along the mansion’s central axis, then visit the Xiaozhuang and Gada Meiren Memorial Halls. Use the site map to choose exhibition halls that are open along the east and west roads. Add the felt workshop, small mansion garden or other activities only after confirming they are operating.
Allow about 3–4 hours. If performance times work, you can fit one or two shows between the galleries; do not rush the visit just to catch every programme. Finish by returning to the entrance you used.
Get there
Driving and navigation
The drive from central Tongliao is about 48 kilometres; actual travel time depends on your starting point and road conditions. Search for “孝庄园文化旅游区” or “达尔罕亲王府” in your navigation app. Call the ticket office at +86 475 231 7777 before setting out to confirm the day’s navigation point, entrance, parking area, shuttle arrangements, pick-up point and fees.
Connections between different areas and parking locations depend on the arrangements that day. On arrival, check the site map and shuttle directions, then follow the open route. If you hire a car, agree with the driver on the pick-up point and return time in advance.
Hired car and return arrangements
If you are not driving, arrange a return car from central Tongliao in advance. Confirm the pick-up entrance, waiting time and meeting point for the return trip with the driver. The site is outside the city centre, so arrange your ride back before the visit instead of looking for transport after leaving.
After the visit, you can return to central Tongliao for a meal or dairy products. Hajiuhai Mongolian Restaurant and Maliu Dairy Shop are city options; navigate to them separately and check their opening hours.
Know before you go
Reconstructed buildings and exhibits
The mansion buildings visitors see are reconstructions, not Qing dynasty buildings preserved in full. Check on-site labels for the status of historical displays, artifacts and furnishings. If your main interest is surviving architecture at the original site, understand this distinction before planning your visit.
The grounds are extensive, and the pace depends on how many exhibition halls are open. Wear comfortable walking shoes. After entering, pick up a site map and mark the areas open that day.
Performances, activities and site rules
Performances such as the Prince’s Procession, Xiaozhuang’s Wedding and a Horqin Wedding may be cancelled, rescheduled or affected by weather. Check the day’s programme after entering. Fees and available times for Mongolian robes, guided tours and craft activities are also set by the on-site information.
Follow venue signs and staff directions for photography, hall access, luggage storage, rest facilities and accessible routes. Do not enter fenced-off or closed areas to catch a performance.
Weather and return arrangements
The site is outside the city centre and includes outdoor walking. Check the forecast and bring sun or wind protection. Weather changes may affect outdoor exhibits and performances.
Back in Tongliao, you could visit Hajiuhai or Maliu Dairy Shop. These are not on-site services; check transport from the attraction and the shops’ hours separately.
