If you’re a red panda enthusiast like my friend, you’ll love exploring these top spots in Chengdu. Having visited multiple times, here’s a summary of the best places and experiences:
1. Dujiangyan Panda Valley
This was our go-to spot, especially during quieter pandemic days. Red pandas roamed freely on the trails in the afternoons, providing incredible interaction opportunities. However, recent visits were less magical due to larger crowds and strict monitoring by staff, who now restrict access to pandas on trails. Tickets cost ¥55, available via the official WeChat account.
2. Feiwa Camp, Sanlang Town
Home to the largest red panda population (70–80), this spot was once free to visit. Now, entry requires purchasing packages like the tea or cat therapy experiences online. It's affordable, but note that red panda activities are often paused during their breeding season (March–May).
3. Dujiangyan Red Panda Forest Park
A lesser-known gem with over 30 red pandas in a smaller area. While the entrance fee is ¥98, you can pay ¥30 for a short feeding session or ¥90 for a half-hour of playtime with a baby panda. Each panda has its own story, making it a charming but pricey experience.
Pro Tips:
The best time to interact with red pandas is 9–10 AM or 4–5 PM when they’re most active. Visit in autumn or winter for cooler weather, as red pandas thrive in the cold. Avoid spring (March–May), as it’s their mating and molting season.
For the ultimate red panda experience, plan wisely and enjoy!
