Plan at a glance
Separate entrance and separate ticket
Daming Temple is at 8 Pingshantang East Road in Hanjiang District. The South Gate is the main visitor entrance, facing the “First Sight of Huai-dong” archway and the Qiling Pagoda gate. The temple stands beside the North Gate of Slender West Lake, but the two attractions have separate entrances and tickets. A Slender West Lake ticket does not take you directly into the temple.
Allow 40–60 minutes for the main halls and the Jianzhen Memorial Hall. For Xiyuan Garden, the Fifth Spring under Heaven, and Qiling Pagoda, plan 1.5–2 hours. The temple combines buildings, gardens, and historical figures, so a very short stop may leave you seeing only the entrance area.
Ticket, opening time, and Qiling Pagoda
Daming Temple uses seasonal ticket pricing, and Qiling Pagoda costs an additional CNY 26. The temple is open 08:00–17:00, with last admission at 16:30. Qiling Pagoda may stop admitting visitors around 16:45, so put the tower early in the route if you want to climb it.
During holidays, tickets may be limited. If you are combining the temple with Slender West Lake, decide the admission times for both before choosing whether to walk from the lake's North Gate to the temple's South Gate.

Pingshantang, Gulin Hall, and the Ouyang Shrine
Pingshantang offers the “Fengliu Zaiwan” inscription and a higher view of the surrounding area. Gulin Hall and the Ouyang Shrine are useful stops for visitors interested in Ouyang Xiu, Su Shi, and Yangzhou's literary history. These buildings sit on the western side and fit naturally into the middle of a short route.
The value here comes from the relationship between the buildings, inscriptions, and courtyards. Take time to look at the signs, roofed walkways, and rooms instead of stopping only for a photo. A short guided explanation can help first-time visitors understand the names and people.
The Jianzhen Memorial Hall and temple buildings
The Jianzhen Memorial Hall uses a Tang-style design, which differs from the Qing-era style of the main temple buildings. Its corridors, rooflines, and courtyards are useful for photography. During the cherry-blossom season, the area around the hall can also be a popular photo stop.
The temple buildings, gardens, and memorial spaces are spread across the grounds, so allow time for turns and short walks. Visitors looking for a quieter visit may prefer entering near opening time before tour groups gather.
Qiling Pagoda and Xiyuan Garden
Qiling Pagoda is one of the temple's most visible buildings. Climbing it requires a separate CNY 26 ticket and is subject to the earlier admission cut-off. Xiyuan Garden and the Fifth Spring under Heaven fit better into the 1.5–2-hour route, with time for gardens and building details.
Daming Temple suits visitors interested in Buddhist architecture, historic figures, pagodas, and quiet gardens. Keep your voice low and follow the local rules for photography and movement in halls and tower areas.
Build your day
The 40- to 60-minute route
Enter at South Gate and pass through the Hall of Heavenly Kings and Mahavira Hall. Continue to Pingshantang, Gulin Hall, and the Ouyang Shrine on the west side, then return toward Mahavira Hall and visit the Jianzhen Memorial Hall on the east. If time allows, add Qiling Pagoda before leaving from South Gate.
This route prioritizes the temple axis and the main historic buildings. If you enter close to the 16:30 last-admission time, focus on the main halls and skip the farther extensions.
The 1.5- to 2-hour route
Enter from South Gate and follow the Hall of Heavenly Kings, Mahavira Hall, Pingshantang, Gulin Hall, the Ouyang Shrine, Jianzhen Memorial Hall, and Qiling Pagoda. Add Xiyuan Garden and the Fifth Spring under Heaven after the main buildings.
Keep a separate time slot for Qiling Pagoda so you do not reach it after admissions have stopped. In a busy period, complete the tower and main halls first, then use Xiyuan Garden as the part of the route you can shorten or extend.
Combining it with Slender West Lake
The walk from Slender West Lake North Gate to Daming Temple South Gate takes about 10 minutes. You must leave the lake, cross the road, and pass through a new temple admission; there is no direct internal passage between the two attractions.
If you have only half a day, visit Slender West Lake in the morning and reach Daming Temple early in the afternoon. Anyone who wants to climb Qiling Pagoda should place the temple earlier rather than arriving near the end of the day.
Get there
Bus access
Take Tourist Route 1 or 2, or buses 25 or 58, and get off at “Daming Temple.” There is no direct metro service to the temple, so public transport means bus plus walking.
For a taxi or a private car, use “Daming Temple South Gate” or “Daming Temple parking area” as the destination. The short walk from Slender West Lake North Gate still ends with a new temple admission.
Parking
Parking around Daming Temple is limited. On holidays, arrive early or use public transport. There are also parking options along Pingshantang Road, but include the walk to South Gate when choosing a space.
Know before you go
Ticket bands and time limits
Daming Temple uses seasonal ticket bands, while Qiling Pagoda is a separate CNY 26 charge. The temple closes to new visitors at 16:30, and the tower may stop admitting visitors earlier. If the tower matters to you, visit it before the other optional areas.
Temple etiquette and incense
Incense activity can be busy. You do not need to buy expensive incense from anyone who approaches you. Keep quiet in halls, the memorial hall, and the tower courtyard, and follow local rules for photography and movement.
Crowds and guiding
Holiday crowds are heavier. Entering around 08:00 gives you more time for the full route. At the entrance, people may offer private guiding or other services; first check whether the temple's own explanation or guiding arrangements meet your needs.
Nearby plans
Slender West Lake is the most natural nearby addition. Guanyin Mountain is also close and works as a separate short stop for visitors who want a quieter setting. It is outside the temple grounds. Nearby food can be arranged as Huaiyang cuisine or local snacks according to the rest of your day.
