Plan at a glance

A riverfront and wharf area, not a single boat ticket

Dongguan Ancient Ferry, Bianyi Gate Square, and the surrounding riverfront can be arranged as a riverside walk in the old town. Dongguan Ancient Ferry is next to Dongguan Street's east gate. Bianyi Gate Square is another useful arrival point and tends to be easier for parking. Both can serve as the start or end of a riverfront route.

The riverfront can be walked for free. A cruise is a separate purchase. If you want bridges, water, and old-town views, you can complete the main stop on foot. If you want boat types, boarding details, and an approximately one-hour night cruise, use the independent Grand Canal Boat Tour arrangement.

How long should you allow?

A short walk from Dongguan Street to Dongguan Ancient Ferry and along the river takes about 1–1.5 hours. Add Bianyi Gate Square, photography, waiting, or a cruise and plan 2–3 hours. A quick wharf stop can be 40–60 minutes.

The experience changes with weather, light, and crowds. Daytime is better for bridges, wharf structures, and old-town buildings. After sunset, slow down along the open riverfront for lights and reflections. Add waiting and boarding time separately if you take a boat.

Choose your visit

Dongguan Ancient Ferry

Dongguan Ancient Ferry is near Dongguan Street's east gate and is the most natural link between the old street and the water. Walk the street first and continue to the ferry, or start at the ferry and move west into the old town.

The area is useful for seeing the wharf, bridges, riverside path, and buildings on both banks. Stay within the public walking area and keep boarding paths clear when boats are arriving or leaving.

Bianyi Gate Square

Bianyi Gate Square offers another access point and is relatively easier for parking. It works for drivers who want to begin with the riverfront and then walk toward Dongguan Ancient Ferry or the old town.

If you only want a daytime canal view, Bianyi Gate Square, Dongguan Ancient Ferry, and nearby lanes form a light route. If Geyuan, Dongguan Street, or the museum is also on the plan, choose the main attraction first and reduce backtracking.

Daytime riverfront and night lights

In daylight, look at the water, bridges, wharves, and old-town buildings as one riverside scene. In the evening, spend more time in open areas and watch the lights and reflections instead of trying to cover a long distance.

Lighting times and effects change with season, weather, and on-site arrangements. Night walking is a viewing option, but no particular lighting time or performance should be assumed every day.

Build your day

Dongguan Street plus the riverfront

Start at Dongguan Gate, walk through Dongguan Street, and continue to Dongguan Ancient Ferry. Follow the riverfront toward Bianyi Gate or another open section, with one rest or snack stop. Finish by walking back into the old town, taking a taxi, or moving to the next attraction according to your energy.

This route links the street, ferry, and riverfront in one continuous direction. If you plan to board a boat, check the wharf before wandering farther from the queue and complete the street section early enough to keep the boarding time comfortable.

A short route from Bianyi Gate

Start at Bianyi Gate Square and walk along the open riverfront, looking at bridges and both banks. Then continue toward Dongguan Ancient Ferry or return to the parking area. The route takes about 1 hour and suits visitors who want a short canal stop without a long walk.

If Dongguan Street is next, check the opening hours of any paid attractions and shops before leaving the waterfront. A river walk can be shortened, but a garden's admission time cannot be extended by the open riverfront.

Before and after a cruise

The riverfront and a night boat can be arranged on the same evening. Walk near Dongguan Street or Bianyi Gate first, reach the confirmed wharf early, and then board. The boat fare, queue, boarding, and return trip are separate from the free riverside walk.

If you only want the riverfront, you do not need to buy a boat ticket. Walking and cruising give different views; choose one according to weather, stamina, and the waiting time, or split them into daytime and evening activities.

Get there

Dongguan Ancient Ferry

Take Tourist Route 1 or 2, or buses 25 or 52, and get off near “Dongguan Ancient Ferry” or “Dongguan Street.” Walk from the stop to the riverfront. Once there, decide whether to enter through Dongguan Street or move directly along the wharf.

Dongguan Ancient Ferry works well with Dongguan Street, Geyuan, and an old-town walking route. The street and ferry area are close enough for walking, so a vehicle transfer is unnecessary for this short section.

Bianyi Gate Square and parking

Parking is relatively easier around Bianyi Gate Square, making it a practical riverfront start for drivers. Holiday spaces can still fill up. Note the entrance and return direction before setting off, especially if you plan to finish at another wharf.

Decide whether you will return to Bianyi Gate for the car or leave from Dongguan Ancient Ferry by taxi. The walking route can be one way, but the vehicle will remain at the starting point.

Know before you go

River walking and cruising are separate

The free riverfront walk and a boat ticket are different arrangements. Before buying a cruise, check the product name, wharf, departure time, and return direction. If you are walking for free, focus on the public path and wharf access.

The separate Grand Canal Boat Tour content covers night routes, boat types, and queueing. Keep the riverside walk focused on the shore so the wharf does not look like a guaranteed boat-ticket entrance.

Crowds, weather, and water safety

On weekends and holidays, Dongguan Street and Dongguan Ancient Ferry may have both walking crowds and boarding queues. Stay within the public path, keep behind barriers, and do not stop in boarding areas. Children and older adults should have a planned rest point away from the water's edge.

Heat, rain, and winter wind change the comfort of a river walk. Wear shoes with good grip and carry water and a light rain layer. If the weather is poor, shorten the outdoor section and spend more time at an indoor attraction.

Nearby plans

Dongguan Street works before or after the riverfront. Geyuan is a good daytime garden stop, while Dongguan Ancient Ferry and a boat can fit around dinner. China Grand Canal Museum is in the Sanwan area, not within walking distance of these old-town wharves, so plan separate transport and a reservation.

The ancient canal is useful for connecting stops, but you do not need to put Dongguan Street, Geyuan, the museum, and the boat into one two-hour window. Choose a start point and a return direction first.
