Plan at a glance

Which entrance should you use?

Slender West Lake is large. South Gate, at 28 Dahongqiao Road, is the most common starting point. West Gate is at 405 Yangzijiang North Road near Wanhua Garden and works well if you want to finish closer to the city. North Gate is on Pingshantang East Road, across from Daming Temple, and is more convenient for some drivers.

There is also an East Gate, and a free loop shuttle connects the four gates. For a first visit, South Gate in and West Gate out is a straightforward choice. If you want to continue to Daming Temple, South Gate in and North Gate out makes more sense.

Tickets and time needed

The daytime adult ticket is CNY 100, with half-price arrangements for students. A separate night-visit ticket is CNY 120 and is usually offered from March to November. Day and night tickets are separate products with separate admission arrangements, so check the time boundary when leaving in the afternoon.

Allow about 2 hours for the main sights only. A first visit with time for gardens and photography is better planned as 3–4 hours. If you continue from North Gate to Daming Temple, add the road crossing, a new admission, and the temple visit separately.

Choose your visit

Five-Pavilion Bridge and Diaoyu Terrace

Five-Pavilion Bridge is the lake's most recognizable structure. Its five roofed pavilions are worth seeing close up, along with the bridge openings, rooflines, and reflections on the water. Diaoyu Terrace has a round moon gate that frames both Five-Pavilion Bridge and the White Pagoda in one view, making it a useful stop for photographers.

White Pagoda, Twenty-Four Bridge, and Xichuntai

The White Pagoda works best when seen together with the lake and bridges. Twenty-Four Bridge is a major stop on the South Gate–West Gate route. Xichuntai is a larger architectural complex where you can pause, look across the water, and sometimes hear live music. Around Xichuntai, it is also possible to frame Twenty-Four Bridge with Qiling Pagoda in the distance.

Xiaojinshan, Xu Garden, and Long Causeway

Long Causeway is a natural opening stretch after entering from the south. Xiaojinshan links several water views, while Xu Garden adds a quieter garden stop to the main route. Visitors who enjoy classical gardens, photography, and historic buildings will get more from a complete walk. Families or anyone avoiding a long walk can stay on the main South Gate–Twenty-Four Bridge section.

Build your day

The two-hour main-sights route

Enter at South Gate and follow Long Causeway to Xiaojinshan, Diaoyu Terrace, Five-Pavilion Bridge, the White Pagoda, and Twenty-Four Bridge. Finish at West Gate. This order keeps the main bridges and water views on one line and reduces backtracking.

Do not spend too long at the first section of Long Causeway. Save time for photography at Diaoyu Terrace and Five-Pavilion Bridge. At Twenty-Four Bridge, decide whether to leave from West Gate or continue north toward North Gate according to your remaining time and energy.

The three- to four-hour extended route

Enter at South Gate and continue through Long Causeway, Xu Garden, Xiaojinshan, Diaoyu Terrace, Five-Pavilion Bridge, the White Pagoda, Xichuntai, Twenty-Four Bridge, and Jingxiang Study. Finish at North Gate.

Compared with the shorter route, this version adds Xu Garden, Xichuntai, and Jingxiang Study. It suits a first visit when you want to take your time. After leaving North Gate, you can continue to Daming Temple. The two attractions have separate admission and route arrangements.

Night visit

For a night visit, enter at South Gate and follow Yelin, Chunbo Bridge, Xu Garden, Xiaojinshan, Five-Pavilion Bridge, the White Pagoda, and Xichuntai before leaving at West Gate. The walking section takes about 1.5 hours. The main night views are the bridges, lake surface, and Xichuntai under lights, so a slower pace works better than rushing between stops.

Night visits have seasonal and event-specific arrangements. Do not assume that the same program runs every night. The night ticket, park admission, and cruise fare are separate; this route covers the park, while the boat options and prices are handled separately.

Get there

Bus access to the gates

For South Gate, take Tourist Route 2 or 4, or buses 25, 27, or 62, and get off at the “Slender West Lake” stop. The walk from the stop to the gate takes about 5 minutes. South Gate is a practical choice for a first visit and for combining the park with a cruise.

North Gate is on Pingshantang East Road and works well if Daming Temple is next. West Gate is near Wanhua Garden and makes it easier to return toward the city. Choose the gate after deciding whether you want the two-hour main route or the longer northern extension.

Driving and the free loop shuttle

For driving, consider the West Gate or North Gate parking areas first. Roadside spaces around South Gate are under more pressure, especially on holidays. If you enter at South Gate and leave at West Gate, decide in advance how you will meet your driver or return to the car.

The free “Grand Canal Cultural Tourism Resort Loop Route 2” connects the South, West, North, and East Gates with Songjiacheng Sports and Leisure Park. It is useful when your entry and exit gates are different and can also connect nearby parks without repeating the same walk.

Know before you go

Daytime visits, night visits, and crowds

Daytime hours vary by season, so plan the daytime and night visits separately. Night visits usually begin around 19:00. During peak periods and holidays, allow extra time for ticketing, admission, and queues.

To avoid the largest tour groups, consider entering early or avoiding the busier windows around 09:30–11:30 and 14:00–16:00. If you enter in the afternoon, check the daytime last-admission and exit arrangements. A daytime visit should be completed before the night-visit period.

Walking, stamina, and food

The park has many stone paths and a full route means sustained walking. Wear flat, comfortable shoes. If someone in your group has limited stamina, use the South Gate–Twenty-Four Bridge route and leave the northern section for another day.

Food and souvenir prices inside the park can be high, so bring water and a few snacks. If you plan to leave from North Gate for Daming Temple, arrange a rest and meal before reaching the final exit.

Photography, rentals, and guides

Diaoyu Terrace is often best about an hour before sunset, when the light is softer. At Five-Pavilion Bridge, try views from Diaoyu Terrace, the bridge side, or a low angle beneath the bridge. Around Twenty-Four Bridge, the Xichuntai area can frame the bridge with Qiling Pagoda in the distance.

Leave room for other visitors at popular viewpoints. At the entrances, people may offer cheap guiding or “help” services; you can decline unsolicited offers. Before renting a costume or an electric cart, confirm the total price, rental period, and deposit-return terms.
