Free areas and opening hours
The public lanes of Shangqing Ancient Town form an open town area and can be walked for free. The Tianshi Mansion usually does not charge a separate attraction admission fee, but public information differs on how its entry relates to the Mount Longhu main-area ticket, reservation, or verification. If you are not buying a Mount Longhu main-area ticket and plan to go directly to the Tianshi Mansion, confirm on the day whether a reservation or another entry check is required. The current reference opening hours for the Tianshi Mansion are 08:00–17:00; the public lanes can be walked throughout the day.
How much time to allow
A quick route from the Tianshi Mansion to Shangqing Old Street takes about 1–1.5 hours. To see the Tianshi Ancestral Temple, the Tianshi Mansion, and the details along the old street, allow 2–3 hours. Some shops close relatively early, so place the old-street walk during the hours when shops are still open if you want to eat or browse in the evening.

Tianshi Mansion
The Tianshi Mansion is an ancestral center of the Zhengyi school of Taoism. Inside, visitors can see the red wall inscribed with “Dao Qi Chang Cun,” a thousand-year-old arhat pine, and the Jade Emperor Hall. It suits visitors interested in Taoist architecture, ritual spaces, and traditional symbols; the main focus is on the courtyards and architectural details.
Shangqing Old Street
Shangqing Old Street extends for about 2 kilometers and is lined mainly with bluestone paving and Jiangxi-style Ming and Qing architecture. Local life and shops remain along the river. Visitors interested in the scale of the lanes, architectural doors and windows, and everyday street life can make the old street a continuous walking section after the Tianshi Mansion.
Tianshi Ancestral Temple
The Tianshi Ancestral Temple is on the way to the Tianshi Mansion, with its entrance near the old-street side. It is relatively small and usually quieter, making it an easy short stop for visitors interested in traditional architecture. Early morning or the softer light after rain can work well.

Visitors interested in Taoist culture can take their time in the order of the ancestral temple, Tianshi Mansion, and old street. Traditional-style photography enthusiasts can use the red walls, old trees, and riverside street scenes. Build your day
1–1.5 hour short route
Enter from the town head, visit the Tianshi Mansion first, then follow the main street onto Shangqing Old Street. Choose how much of the 2-kilometer section to walk. This short route suits visitors who only want the town and Tianshi Mansion; leave from the town head or parking area when finished.
2–3 hour slow route
Follow the Tianshi Ancestral Temple, Tianshi Mansion, and Shangqing Old Street in that order. Start at the old-street-side entrance to see the ancestral temple, spend more time in the Tianshi Mansion courtyards, then walk slowly along the riverside old street. Shop and restaurant closing times vary, so keep the final part of the route in the section that is still open.
Nearby extensions
Da Shangqing Palace can be reached on foot or by vehicle, while Zhengyi Temple can be reached by vehicle from the town. Add either one after the town visit according to your energy and the day’s transport connections. Neither is included in the short or slow town route described above.
Get there
K2, sightseeing bus, and passenger route
From Yingtan Station, K2 is a commonly used public-transport option to the Mount Longhu visitor center. From there, connect with scenic-area transport to the town-head area of Shangqing Ancient Town. A sightseeing bus from the visitor center can also take you near the town entrance. A direct passenger bus service between Yingtan and Shangqing may also operate, but schedules, stops, and fares can change considerably; confirm locally before using it.
Driving and parking
If driving, navigate directly to “Shangqing Ancient Town.” There is parking nearby, and the town head is a practical navigation target. After parking, follow on-site directions into the old street and Tianshi Mansion. Check the parking fee and space availability for the day.
Keep transport and admission separate
Confirm the public lanes, Tianshi Mansion entry, visitor-center sightseeing bus, K2, and other scenic-area products separately. The old-town lanes being free to walk does not mean that Tianshi Mansion entry verification or scenic-area transport is automatically included.
Know before you go
Photography inside halls and visitor etiquette
Do not photograph the religious statues inside the Tianshi Mansion halls. Follow on-site signs when photographing the red walls, old trees, and doors and windows. Complimentary incense is available inside the Tianshi Mansion; if someone offers incense for purchase at the town entrance, first ask whether the purchase is voluntary and what it costs.
Fortune slips and fee explanations
The Tianshi Mansion is currently not offering fortune slips. Check the service status on the day if this is a reason for your visit. If someone introduces fortune-telling, blessing, lantern offering, or donation-based services at the entrance or in the lanes, ask what the service includes and how much it costs, then pay only if you choose to participate.
Shop and meal hours
The town has a strong local-life atmosphere, and some shops close around 19:00. Plan meals during the daytime or early evening. Shunfeng Local Restaurant and Fumanlou Local Restaurant, as well as Shangqing tofu, chestnut roast chicken, and Luxi River fish, are among the food options in the source material. Check current opening and menu information on the day.
Walking and weather
The short route mainly walks from the Tianshi Mansion to the old street; the slow route also includes the Tianshi Ancestral Temple and about 2 kilometers of old street. Bluestone paving can be slippery after rain. Stay in walkable areas when photographing riverside railings and old-street corners. The reference that the old town can be visited throughout the day does not mean every hall and shop is open all day.
