How to Visit
1

Treat it as a short self-drive add-on

Most visitors need only 30-60 minutes. Make a special trip only if you are genuinely interested in ruins and Hexi Corridor history.

Tip:This is an open-air archaeological landscape, not a fully serviced sightseeing complex.
2

Follow the access roads and on-site signs

Drive or hire a car from Zhangye, then follow roads, barriers and signs after navigating to Heishuiguo Site.

Tip:Do not cut across sand or farmland edges in an attempt to shorten the route.
3

View the remains only from accessible areas

Observe the rammed-earth walls, archaeological landscape and surrounding oasis from permitted ground. Do not force a walk between the northern and southern sections if no clear route is available.

Tip:Leave walls, bricks, pottery fragments and all other surface remains untouched.
4

Visit in daylight and leave before dark

Visit in daylight or before sunset, then leave directly after photographs.

Tip:Do not treat this as a suitable place for solo exploration after dark, especially in poor weather or low visibility.
Highlights
  • An uncommercialised earthen-walled archaeological landscape on the edge of the Hexi Corridor.
  • Northern and southern remnants set against farmland and oasis scenery.
  • A landscape-based encounter with history rather than a museum-style visit.
  • Low-angle light adds definition to the walls and open ground without requiring a long stay.
Insider Tips

This is Zhangye's Heishuiguo Site, not the better-known Heishui City in Ejin Banner, Inner Mongolia.

Do not expect the facilities, supplies or lighting of a fully managed attraction.

Carry water, sun protection and offline maps, and park only on firm ground or in clearly permitted spaces.

Do not climb, dig, or collect bricks, pottery fragments or any other archaeological material.

Skip the stop if there is strong wind, rain, muddy roads or poor visibility.
