How to Visit
1

Plan a half-day to full-day round trip from Zhangye.

Self-driving, a private car, or a shared car makes timing easier; if you use the tourist shuttle, treat its return departure as a fixed deadline.

Tip:The canyon is well outside the city, so transport timing shapes the whole visit.
2

Choose the route before entering.

Choose between the standard visit and the deeper route based on fitness and interest. Allow more time if you want to descend into the canyon and take the fuller route; choose the lower-effort option when travelling with children, older companions, or anyone who prefers less walking.

Tip:The two options differ meaningfully in walking effort and time needed.
3

Start high, then enter the canyon.

Begin at the high viewpoints for the full canyon view, then continue into walking sections such as One-Line Sky and Lingzhi Valley. Expect gravel, sand, and stairs, and follow the one-way route.

Tip:Do not leave open boardwalks or reverse the route for photos.
4

Finish the demanding sections while energy is high.

Complete the most demanding canyon sections before fatigue sets in. The Panlong Staircase near the exit and some exposed elevation changes may not suit visitors with a fear of heights.

Tip:Assess your comfort with stairs and heights before committing to the deeper canyon walk.
Highlights
  • High viewpoints reveal the scale of the red canyon cutting through the Gobi plateau.
  • One-Line Sky narrows between steep walls, creating a very different experience from the open viewpoints above.
  • Lingzhi Valley has a gentler boardwalk and works well as the final section of the canyon walk.
  • The standard and deeper routes feel distinctly different, so choose according to your time, fitness, and interest in entering the canyon.
  • The remote Gobi setting and the drive through it are part of the experience, not just the journey to the entrance.
Insider Tips

Wear shoes with good grip. Gravel, sand, and steps make sandals or slippery soles a poor choice.

Supplies inside are limited, so bring enough water, simple snacks, a hat, and sun protection.

Wind can carry a lot of dust; a mask or scarf and protective eyewear are genuinely useful.

After rain, the canyon floor can become wet and muddy. Follow on-site safety arrangements during rain or strong winds.

If relying on the tourist shuttle, work backwards from its return time and leave enough time to get out of the canyon and back to the visitor centre.
