Plan at a glance

Treat it as one old-city walking line

Leizhou Ancient City is about 70 km south of central Zhanjiang. Its key stops are spread between Leizhou West Lake Park, Leizhou Museum, Sanyuan Pagoda Park, the Qujie historic district and Leizu Ancestral Hall. The streets, West Lake and Sanyuan Pagoda Park are free to enter, while the museum, temples, ancestral hall and Drum Town keep their own hours; the point is to connect city monuments, arcade streets and an evening stop into one workable day.

Half a day or a full day

If time is tight, allow half a day for West Lake, the museum, Sanyuan Pagoda and Qujie. A full day is more relaxed if you also want Tianning Temple, Leizu Ancestral Hall and Maodegong Drum Town. If you want to add Wushi Tianchengtai, Bangtang Village or Zurong Village, split the trip over two days rather than forcing city walking and out-of-town travel into one afternoon.

Choose your visit

A half-day core old-city route

Start at Leizhou West Lake Park, walk to Leizhou Museum for the stone dogs and history displays, continue to Sanyuan Pagoda Park for the tower exterior and old-city axis, then end in Qujie for food and arcade buildings. This is the simplest first visit if you mainly want to understand the shape of Leizhou; if the museum is closed on a Monday, give the extra time to West Lake and Qujie.

Separate the day from the evening

Use the morning for West Lake, the museum and Tianning Temple, then eat in Qujie. In the afternoon go to Sanyuan Pagoda Park and Leizu Ancestral Hall, before moving to Maodegong Drum Town for the evening. This separates indoor displays, monuments, arcades and night walking, so you do not have to photograph outdoor buildings in the strongest midday sun or miss the evening part of the route.

Build your day

Use the lake and museum to set the context

Su Gong Pavilion, the Ten Worthies Shrine and Nine-Bend Bridge make a calm morning walk at West Lake, while the museum adds the stone dogs, inscriptions, ceramics and folk culture that explain the city. Continue to Sanyuan Pagoda Park for the pagoda, gate and Er Gong Shrine; the city walk will make more sense than starting by wandering straight into Qujie.

Keep the arcades for afternoon and night walking for later

Qujie's arcades, Zhenwu Hall, Fubo Shrine and food stalls work better later in the afternoon, and many restaurants do not follow a standard breakfast-or-lunch schedule. If you are visiting Maodegong Drum Town, make it the end point for dinner and an evening walk. Keeping the old city's daytime history line separate from its night-time leisure line makes the day far easier to manage.

Get there

From central Zhanjiang or Leizhou railway station

Driving from central Zhanjiang takes about 1–1.5 hours. Once in Leizhou, the city sights are close enough to park and continue on foot or by shared e-bike. Without a car, take a coach to Leizhou Main Bus Station and then a taxi or e-bike into the old city; from Leizhou railway station, a taxi to the core area takes about 15 minutes and works well if West Lake or the museum is your first stop.

Do not keep driving between city stops

Leizhou West Lake, the museum, Sanyuan Pagoda, Tianning Temple and Qujie work well by shared e-bike or on foot; an all-day e-bike rental is about CNY 50. A car is more useful for the distance from Zhanjiang, Leizu Ancestral Hall and the outlying villages. Once you reach the old-city core, park near West Lake or the museum and continue by the walking route.

Know before you go

Plan Sanyuan Pagoda as an exterior visit

Sanyuan Pagoda is currently an exterior stop, with no tower access, so do not make a city view from the top a fixed part of the day. Qujie's restaurant hours also tend to start late, and some places are not open at lunch; having a backup meal plan will make the route less stressful.

Think about sun, mosquitoes and parking together

Most old-city monuments are outdoors, so West Lake, Sanyuan Pagoda and Leizu Ancestral Hall all need sun protection, while greener areas also need insect repellent. On holidays, do not lose time looking for a space in the core streets: park once and use walking or an e-bike. Light-coloured or new-Chinese-style clothing suits the architecture, but shoes that can handle a full day matter more.
