How much time to allow

Jinshan Scenic Area is at 62 Jinshan Road in Runzhou District. Its centrepiece is Jinshan Temple, also called Jiangtian Zen Temple. Allow 2–3 hours for a full route through the temple, hillside pavilions, caves and river views. If you only want the most representative buildings and legend-related sites, a shorter route takes about 1–1.5 hours.

The scenic area has a South Gate and an East Gate. The South Gate is better for a first visit because the classic route starts there and the sequence of buildings and stairs is easier to follow. Opening hours are 08:00–18:00, with last entry at 17:00. Smaller sites may keep their own hours, so afternoon arrivals should leave time for entry and the climb.

Ticket and visitor profile

Jinshan's admission is seasonal: CNY 50 from June–August and December–February, and CNY 65 from March–May and September–November. Full-time students at undergraduate level or below can usually buy half-price tickets with a student card or an authentication record from the Chinese education system. Student discounts require in-person document verification. Online advance-purchase prices may differ from the scenic area's posted rate, so budget by the seasonal admission price first.

Jinshan suits visitors interested in Buddhist architecture, Chinese classical legends and photography. Families can use stories from “The Legend of the White Snake” as a thread through the visit. There are many stairs, so older visitors, young children and anyone unused to uphill walking should shorten the full route rather than forcing every stop.

Temple, hillside and “The Legend of the White Snake”

Jinshan is easiest to understand through the idea of a “temple wrapped around a mountain”: the temple buildings follow the slope, and the hill is often hidden by buildings as you move between stairs and halls. The Jiangtian Zen Temple archway, Hall of the Heavenly Kings, Mahavira Hall and the stairway to the upper level form the most recognisable first-visit sequence.

Fahai Cave, White Dragon Cave and Mahavira Hall help overseas visitors connect the local buildings and caves with the cultural associations of “flooding Jinshan” and “The Legend of the White Snake”. The legends are rooted in specific places rather than a theme-park setup. Visitors who enjoy stories can follow them while walking, while photographers may prefer to study compositions made by walls, doorways and tower shadows.

Cishou Pagoda, river views and photo spots

Cishou Pagoda is Jinshan's clearest visual landmark, but currently it can only be viewed from below and should not be planned as a climb. The Jiangtian Zen Temple gate works well for a front-facing view from lower ground. On the main staircase to Cishou Pagoda, the yellow walls on both sides create a strong frame. The plaque behind Mahavira Hall, the stone arch beside the Sutra Repository, and the distant views from Furong Tower and the Jinshan Lake promenade are also worth taking time to notice.

Visitors who prefer a quieter pace can add Jiangtian Yilan Pavilion, White Dragon Cave and Furong Tower to a fuller route. Zhongling Spring is currently a pool without a visible spring outlet; with limited time, see it on the way rather than changing the route around it.

Build your day

A complete 2–3 hour route

Enter through the South Gate, pass the Jiangtian Zen Temple archway and Hall of the Heavenly Kings, then continue to Mahavira Hall. Follow the stairs uphill to Miaogao Terrace, Lengqie Terrace and Fahai Cave, then continue to the area below Cishou Pagoda to view the pagoda's exterior.

From Cishou Pagoda, continue to Jiangtian Yilan Pavilion and White Dragon Cave. Descend past Zhongling Spring and Furong Tower, then leave through the scenic-area exit. This route includes many stairs and uphill and downhill sections, so leave extra time for photographs, quiet temple visits and points where crowds cross. If you enter late in the afternoon, prioritise the archway, Mahavira Hall, the exterior of Cishou Pagoda and White Dragon Cave.

A 1–1.5 hour shorter route

When time or energy is limited, enter through the South Gate and walk from the Jiangtian Zen Temple archway directly to Mahavira Hall. Follow the main path to view the exterior of Cishou Pagoda and White Dragon Cave, then return towards the exit. This shorter route leaves out longer stops at Miaogao Terrace, Lengqie Terrace and Furong Tower, and works well as the first stop in a half-day route through Zhenjiang's old city.

The shorter route still involves stairs, so wear shoes suitable for uphill and downhill walking. Plan Cishou Pagoda as an exterior view only, and stay on open paths around White Dragon Cave and the other caves when taking photographs. If the route is crowded, complete the main line first and decide later whether to add peripheral stops.

Get there

From Zhenjiang Railway Station and central Zhenjiang

Jinshan is easy to reach from Zhenjiang Railway Station. A taxi usually takes about 10 minutes. Buses such as Routes 2 and 17 can also reach the area; Routes 8, 49, 104, 130 and 133 serve the wider Jinshan area. When booking or navigating, distinguish Zhenjiang Railway Station from Zhenjiang South Railway Station: the latter is farther from the central attractions.

Use “Jinshan Park” in your map app. Drivers can first look for the car park on the west side of the scenic area, where parking is about CNY 5 per stay. On holidays, confirm the available entrance and parking space before deciding which gate to use.

South Gate, East Gate and what comes next

The South Gate is best for a first visit and the full route. The East Gate is another entrance, but the two gates lead into different starting directions. If you plan to continue from Jinshan to Xijin Ferry, calculate the time for leaving the scenic area, walking, waiting for transport and exploring the old district separately. The two attractions can be visited on the same day, but they do not share a ticket or entrance.

Know before you go

Stairs, shoes and pace

There are many stairs between Jinshan's hillside paths and temple buildings. Shoes with good grip are important; thin soles and high heels make the descent more tiring. Families can keep children and older relatives on a shorter route, so the group does not need to go up and down repeatedly just to regroup.

Cishou Pagoda is currently for exterior viewing only and cannot be climbed. Zhongling Spring no longer has a visible spring outlet and can be skipped when time is short. After rain, stairs, stone paving and areas near the caves become more slippery. Do not stand outside barriers or block uphill and downhill passages while taking photographs.

Tickets, guides and food

People may approach visitors inside the scenic area with unofficial guiding services or expensive incense, religious objects and supposed consecration products. If you want a guide, confirm the person's identity and charges first; otherwise, a clear refusal is enough. Vegetarian meals and other food inside the scenic area can be expensive. For guogai noodles or other Zhenjiang dishes, return to the city after leaving Jinshan.

If you arrive late in the afternoon, complete ticket inspection before last entry and then choose a shorter route according to the remaining time. If you plan Jinshan together with other attractions, ask separately at purchase time whether the Three Mountains and One Ferry pass applies, what it costs that day and how it can be used. Do not assume that a pass allows immediate entry to every attraction.
