Plan at a glance
How much time to allow
Xijin Ferry Historical and Cultural District is at 25 Xijindu Street in Runzhou District, near Yuntai Mountain and Zhenjiang Museum. The main street area is free and open all day. Allow 1–1.5 hours for the bluestone lanes, slopes, old streets and riverside buildings; adding Jiushenghui, Guanyin Cave, Yuntai Pavilion or the former British Consulate takes about 2–3 hours.
Most visitors start at the East Gate near Boxian Road. For a first visit, walk from the East Gate towards Waiting Ferry Pavilion, then decide whether to return the same way or leave through the West Gate. The district suits visitors interested in history, old buildings, photography and a slower walk through Zhenjiang's old city.
The street area is free; individual sites charge separately
Entry to Xijin Ferry itself is free, and there is no single district-wide ticket. A combined ticket for Guanyin Cave and Jiushenghui is around CNY 30, Yuntai Pavilion is around CNY 20, and the former British Consulate is around CNY 20. Each site has its own opening and ticket arrangements, and Yuntai Pavilion may stop access in rainy weather.
The smaller sites generally open around 09:00–17:00, with last entry around 16:30. Jiushenghui and Zhenjiang Museum are usually closed on Mondays, while the public street area remains open. Treat the street's all-day access and the indoor or paid sites' opening hours as separate parts of the plan.

Layered streets, the stone pagoda and old lanes
The “A Glimpse of a Thousand Years” archaeological road section sits under glass in the middle of the old street and shows road layers built up from the Tang period to the Qing period. It gives first-time visitors a clear way to understand the area's long history and only needs a short stop, but it belongs on the main walk.
Zhaoguan Stone Pagoda stands directly along the street. It is a Yuan-period street-crossing stone pagoda with Sanskrit inscriptions and Buddhist carvings. The Fifty-Three Slope keeps old shopfronts and sloping lanes, while Waiting Ferry Pavilion is a riverside stop near the western end. Visitors who enjoy architecture can look at the timber doors, brick walls, stone steps and changes in street level.
Modern history, evening lights and photography
The former British Consulate is a red-brick building group and part of the related Zhenjiang Museum visit. It suits visitors interested in modern port history, architectural photography and the meeting of Chinese and Western building styles. The arched entrance at Jiushenghui can frame Yuntai Pavilion, while Zhaoguan Stone Pagoda works well for quiet morning photographs and for lit-up street scenes after dusk.
Entering around 17:30 can give you the end of daylight and the street lights that usually begin to come on after 18:00. The timing and intensity of the lights may vary by day. Treat an evening visit as a walk through public streets and buildings, not as a fixed show or a ticketed night event.
Build your day
A 1–1.5 hour public-street route
Enter from the East Gate or the Boxian Road side. Start with the “A Glimpse of a Thousand Years” road section, then continue to Zhaoguan Stone Pagoda. Walk through the Fifty-Three Slope to Waiting Ferry Pavilion, pause by the western riverside, and either return the same way or leave through the West Gate according to the day's access directions.
This route stays in the public street area and does not enter the paid sites. It suits visitors who want the outline of the old district, the stone pagoda and traditional buildings. Bluestone and slopes slow the pace, so families with strollers or visitors with limited mobility should consider the route conditions before choosing the longer lanes.
A 2–3 hour route with smaller sites and the museum
Enter from the East Gate and pass the archaeological road section, Zhaoguan Stone Pagoda and the Fifty-Three Slope. If the sites are open, choose Jiushenghui and Guanyin Cave according to your interests. Continue to Waiting Ferry Pavilion and leave towards the West Gate; when Zhenjiang Museum is open, it can follow as the next stop, about a 3-minute walk from the street area near its East Gate.
The former British Consulate needs separate time and a separate ticket arrangement. If it is a priority, confirm its opening area first and then decide how much time to spend at Jiushenghui or Guanyin Cave. The street itself does not require you to rush through every paid site.
An afternoon-to-evening route
Enter from the East Gate around 17:30, walk to Zhaoguan Stone Pagoda and the Fifty-Three Slope, then watch the light change near Waiting Ferry Pavilion. After 18:00, return to the pagoda or a wider part of the old street for the lit-up buildings, and leave through the East or West Gate.
The smaller indoor sites may already have stopped entry by evening, so use the public lanes, pagoda, slopes and lights as the main experience. Put Zhenjiang Museum and the former British Consulate into a daytime plan rather than leaving them until night.
Get there
From Zhenjiang Railway Station to the East Gate
Zhenjiang Railway Station is close to Xijin Ferry and the main city attractions. A taxi takes about 10 minutes. Use “Xijin Ferry Historical and Cultural District” or the Boxian Road area in your map, with the East Gate as the usual walking start. Zhenjiang has no metro, and a taxi is simpler than changing between several buses when you have luggage.
Drivers can use the Xijindu Public Underground Parking Lot. Daytime parking from 08:00–20:00 costs CNY 5 per stay, and night parking from 20:00 to 08:00 the next day costs CNY 3 per stay. Even with many spaces, allow time to enter the garage, collect the car and walk to the East Gate on weekends and holidays.
Moving through the district
Most movement inside the district is on foot. The East Gate, Fifty-Three Slope, Waiting Ferry Pavilion and West Gate are connected by bluestone paths and slopes. Wheelchairs and strollers may have difficulty on some ramps, stone surfaces and narrow lanes; families can begin with the main public street and decide whether to enter the narrower sites after seeing the conditions.
Xijin Ferry is next to Zhenjiang Museum, Boxian Park and the Jingji Road modern-era building district, so they can form a half-day cultural walk. Calculate each site's opening hours, ticket and rest time separately. The districts connect on foot, but each one has its own entrance.
Know before you go
Mondays and rainy weather
Jiushenghui and Zhenjiang Museum are usually closed on Mondays, and the former British Consulate follows the museum's arrangement. Xijin Ferry's public streets remain open. On a Monday, focus on the archaeological road section, Zhaoguan Stone Pagoda, Fifty-Three Slope and Waiting Ferry Pavilion instead of making the paid sites the main purpose of the visit.
Bluestone, slopes and the Yuntai Pavilion stairs become more slippery in rain, and Yuntai Pavilion may stop access. Wear shoes with good grip and stay on the open paths when taking photographs. Families with strollers should consider shortening the route if the slopes are difficult.
Food and breaks
Noodle shops and local restaurants around Xijin Ferry often finish lunch service early, and some begin closing around 13:30–14:00. If you want local noodles, plan lunch early. If you want river fish or another dish that may require a queue, take a number before walking through the district so the meal does not conflict with venue closing times.
Food choices inside the district change with individual shop hours, so carry water during the walk. The public streets can remain open for an evening stroll, but restaurants, museums and small shops keep their own hours and should not all be treated as all-day services.
