Plan at a glance

Two zones, two entrances

Shapotou is about 16 km west of downtown Zhongwei and is divided mainly into the Yellow River Zone and the Desert Zone. The Yellow River Zone uses Waterwheel Gate, while the Desert Zone uses the Gate of Time and Space. The entrances are about 8 km apart, so include the cross-zone transfer in your schedule if you plan to visit both in one day.

Each zone has its own activities and services. For the Yellow River Zone only, enter and leave through Waterwheel Gate. For the Desert Zone, navigate to the Gate of Time and Space and choose your entrance with parking and your return pickup in mind.

Opening hours and admission

Published opening hours are 8:30–18:00 from April 1 to October 31 and 9:00–17:30 from November 1 to March 31. Night markets and performances have separate tickets and entry times; check the schedule for the day of your visit.

Reference admission prices are CNY 80 for adults in peak season, CNY 50 for adults in the off-season, and CNY 40 for students in peak season. Feihuang Tengda, sand sliding, camel rides, desert off-road vehicle rides, sheepskin rafts and other activities cost extra. Activities can be purchased individually or in packages. Check what each ticket includes, ride restrictions and transfer coverage before buying. For popular activities, review ticket types and real-name booking requirements through the official online channels in advance.

Choose your visit

Yellow River Zone: zipline, dunes and raft rides

The Yellow River Zone combines river views and dune walks with activities such as the Feihuang Tengda zipline, sand sliding, speedboat rides and sheepskin rafts. The zipline crosses above the Yellow River, Wang Wei Viewpoint looks over the river bend and dunes, and the sand slide runs down from the dune to the riverbank.

A sheepskin raft offers a way to experience traditional river transport and the local boatmen's culture. Depending on the trip, the boatman may explain the tradition or sing Hua'er folk songs. The rafts can have a noticeable smell of animal hides and grease, so consider this before joining if you are sensitive to strong odours.

Desert Zone: camels, desert off-road vehicle rides and viewpoints

The Gate of Time and Space is the entrance to the Desert Zone. Activities include camel rides, desert off-road vehicle rides and Flying over the Desert (大漠飞天), a rotating observation ride with cabins rising to about 55 m for panoramic views of the dunes.

Installations near the entrance include a giant face, dead-tree sculptures and arches. Allow about 1–2 hours for photos around the Gate of Time and Space. Stay in areas open to visitors, and do not climb the sculptures or tree installations.

Choose by time and interests

If this is your first visit and you want to see both landscapes, allow half a day for each zone. With less time, choose the zone you most want to see, then pick two or three activities. The Tengger Desert is a wider desert region with camps and tours run by different operators, while Golden Sand Sea is a separate resort with its own reception point and ticket arrangements. Neither uses Shapotou's admission ticket. Check the exact location, transport and booking requirements for each.

Families can combine viewpoints and sand sliding in the Yellow River Zone, then choose open activities in the Desert Zone that suit the child. Before booking a zipline or water activity, check the child's ticket type and ride requirements.

Build your day

One-day route: Yellow River Zone first, then the Desert Zone

Enter the Yellow River Zone through Waterwheel Gate. Based on your ticket, take a speedboat or walk into the activity area, then use the Desert Escalator, cableway or walking route that is open that day to reach Wang Wei Viewpoint above the dunes. Sand sliding, the Feihuang Tengda zipline and sheepskin rafts have different start and end points. Plan the downhill route and return for each activity before going down, then fit in the water activity; this avoids having to climb back up from the riverbank.

After lunch, go from the Yellow River Zone activity area to the cross-zone shuttle stop, then continue to the Gate of Time and Space for a camel ride, desert off-road vehicle ride or Flying over the Desert (大漠飞天). If your car is at Waterwheel Gate, confirm the transfer back to that entrance and the last shuttle before setting out. If you leave from the Gate of Time and Space, arrange your pickup there in advance.

A compact 4–5 hour visit

If queues are short, transfers run smoothly and activities are operating, enter through Waterwheel Gate and choose the Feihuang Tengda zipline, sand sliding or one Yellow River activity. Then take the cross-zone shuttle to the Gate of Time and Space, choose one desert activity and leave from the corresponding entrance. Treat 4–5 hours as a compact itinerary estimate; it does not guarantee that you can complete several activities in both zones under normal queue conditions. If time runs short, drop activities first and choose the exit that matches your parking or pickup point.

For a sheepskin raft experience, choose a one-way drift or a speedboat-and-raft package. The package does not include other activities such as the zipline or sand sliding. Your ticket determines the speedboat and raft order, boarding and disembarking points, and return arrangements; check the ticket details and the entrance it uses when booking.

Get there

Choose your entrance

For the Yellow River Zone, navigate to “沙坡头黄河区—水车门” (Shapotou Yellow River Zone—Waterwheel Gate); a car park is beside the entrance. The reference parking fee is CNY 10 per day; check the posted fee when you arrive. For the Desert Zone, navigate directly to “沙坡头旅游景区时空之门” (Shapotou Scenic Area—Gate of Time and Space) and use the entrance for your planned zone. There is a visitor reception centre at the gate where luggage can be stored; oversized bags and collection times are subject to on-site rules.

Bus 2 runs between the Zhongwei Long-Distance Bus Station and Shapotou. A tourist shuttle also runs from Zhongwei South High-Speed Railway Station to Waterwheel Gate and the Gate of Time and Space. Bus departure times change by season, so check the current schedule before leaving. The scenic area is about 16 km from downtown. For a taxi or chartered car, specify Waterwheel Gate or the Gate of Time and Space and agree on your pickup point for the return trip.

Travel between zones and plan your return

A cross-zone shuttle links the Yellow River Zone and the Desert Zone. A separate in-park shuttle connects the Gate of Time and Space with 传奇乐园 (the themed-park area). Confirm the current boarding and drop-off points on site, as well as whether your ticket covers the transfer. Also check whether your ticket includes the cross-zone shuttle and choose your exit based on where you parked or arranged pickup.

Know before you go

Opening times and water activities

Sheepskin rafts, speedboats and other water activities may be suspended because of wind, water conditions or riverbed maintenance. Weather or on-site work can change operations, and a package ticket does not guarantee that every activity will run.

Night-market admission and event times are separate from daytime visits. If you plan to go in the evening, confirm that night's entry time, open areas and return transport.

Child restrictions and activity prices

The public reference price for the “Speedboat + Sheepskin Raft” package is CNY 120 for adults and CNY 60 for children. A child's eligibility also depends on the specific product's height, age and activity restrictions. Scenic-area admission discounts and child prices for water activities are separate. Check the ride requirements for the Feihuang Tengda zipline before booking.

Walking on sand and taking photos

The desert sun is strong, and wind can blow fine sand into your eyes. Bring sun protection, sunglasses and a scarf, and wear shoes suitable for walking on sand. Follow on-site boundaries around dunes, the riverbank and viewpoints. Do not take photos from roads or unsafe spots by the water, and do not climb art installations.
