Where the desert recreation area is
Tengger Golden Sand Sea Resort is in Yingshui Town (迎水镇), Shapotou District, Zhongwei, west of the 迎闫公路 interchange and near the junction of 迎闫公路 and 小湖路. Golden Sand Sea has its own reception point and tickets; Shapotou Scenic Area has a separate entrance and ticket system.
Usual opening hours are 9:00–18:00. Call 0955-3986805 before you go to confirm any temporary changes and the last admission time for that day.
Decide between a day visit and an overnight stay
If you are coming for desert activities only, allow about half a day. For an overnight stay, book a train-themed hotel or tent camp separately; room types and check-in times follow your accommodation booking.

Dunes and activities
The Ningxia tourism authority has listed attractions and activities including 大漠观海楼 (Desert Viewing Tower), 丝路长街 (Silk Road Street) and 丝路驼队 (Silk Road Camel Experience). Availability may vary, so check which areas and activities are open on the day of your visit. Other ticketed experiences may include desert off-road vehicle rides, camel rides, sand sliding and rainbow slides.
Choose individual activities or a package
Some desert activities can be bought individually, while others are sold in packages. If you want to try several, compare what each ticket includes and how many sessions it allows, then choose activities such as desert off-road vehicle rides, camel rides or sand sliding to suit your interests.
Train-themed accommodation
The train-themed hotel is an option if you want to include a desert stay in your Zhongwei itinerary. Accommodation is booked separately from scenic-area activities; use the address and room type on your booking.
For a broader guide to desert routes and operators across the region, see Tengger Desert.
Build your day
A 2–3 hour visit
If the activities are open and queues are short, allow 2–3 hours for this sequence: ticket check at the entrance → desert off-road vehicle ride → camel ride → sand sliding → return to the entrance. This estimate covers time inside the resort, not the round trip from Zhongwei. Queues or temporary suspensions may shorten your visit, so drop activities if time runs short.
A half-day visit or overnight stay
To spend more time than the short route allows, consider adding 大漠观海楼 (Desert Viewing Tower) and 丝路长街 (Silk Road Street) if they are open that day, then choose another viewpoint activity based on current operations. In the afternoon, confirm the last admission and closing time. A daytime ticket does not authorise a stay in the desert after closing. If you plan to watch the sunset or join a night activity, confirm in advance whether a specific area is open and how entry is arranged. Overnight guests should ask their accommodation about night access and transport back to their room.
If you book the scenic-area visit and train-themed hotel separately, keep both booking addresses and contact numbers. Meals, checkout time and next-day transfers follow the accommodation booking.
Get there
Navigate to the Golden Sand Sea reception point
If you drive or take a taxi, set the destination to “腾格里·金沙海旅游度假区” (Tengger Golden Sand Sea Resort) and check that navigation ends near the scenic-area reception point at 迎闫公路 and 小湖路. Navigate separately to the train-themed hotel using the address on your accommodation booking.
Travel time from Zhongwei Station, Zhongwei South Station or Shapotou Airport varies with your starting point and road conditions. Confirm station pickup, fees, the meeting point and the return arrangement with your host before arrival. If you are not driving, you can also arrange a car to the resort reception point in advance.
Arrange your return to town
If you are visiting for the day, arrange your return car and pickup point before entering. Overnight guests should ask at check-in how to travel between the night reception point and their accommodation; walking across the dunes is not a route back to town.
Know before you go
Tickets and activity restrictions
Admission, activities, parking and accommodation may be charged separately. For a package, check which activities, number of uses and time slots are included. Before a child tries a desert off-road vehicle ride, camel ride or slide, check the product's height, age and supervision requirements.
Walking on sand and weather
Soft sand takes more effort to walk on than firm ground, and sand can get into your shoes and socks. Bring a hat, sunglasses, sun protection and drinking water. Pack a light jacket for your travel dates. Follow on-site suspensions during sandstorms or other weather changes. Stay in areas open to visitors, and do not drive an ordinary vehicle into closed dunes.
