Plan at a glance
Choose a specific camp and product
The Tengger Desert stretches across Zhongwei in Ningxia and Alxa in Inner Mongolia. From Zhongwei, you can join activities run by different camps and tour operators. There is no single visitor entrance or standard opening schedule; the meeting address and activities depend on the camp or route you book.
Compare prices by product
There is no unified admission ticket for the Tengger Desert. Half-day activities, camping and cross-desert treks are run by different operators, and each product sets its own price and inclusions. Check how many activity sessions, transfers, tents and meals are included. For a trek, also confirm the guide, insurance and evacuation arrangements.

Choose your visit
Half-day desert activities
Camps may offer guided desert off-road vehicle rides, camel rides, go-karting, motorbike experiences and sand sliding. Activities, routes and operating hours vary by camp. For any self-drive activity, check the minimum age, driving licence requirements and whether an instructor is provided. Camel rides usually follow designated routes rather than allowing independent travel across the dunes.
Stay overnight to see the desert at night
A tent stay suits travellers who want to spend a night in the desert and join camp activities. Some camps offer dinner or stargazing, but availability, extra charges and viewing conditions depend on the camp, weather and that night's schedule.
Guided treks
A trek is best for visitors who are used to long walks and comfortable walking on soft sand. The organiser needs to arrange supplies and the return trip. Some long routes pass Swan Lake (天鹅湖), Ulan Lake (乌兰湖), Suhaitu Lake (苏海图湖), Sun Lake (太阳湖) or Moon Lake (月亮湖); the combination depends on the group's route. Moon Lake is in Alxa, so its pickup point differs from camps around Zhongwei.
For a resort-based visit with its own entrance and lodging, see Tengger Golden Sand Sea Resort.
For a managed scenic-area visit combining Yellow River and dune activities, see Shapotou Scenic Area.
Build your day
A 3–4 hour camp visit
Go to the reception point or car park specified in your booking, then take the transfer arranged by that camp into the activity area. Follow your ticket's sequence for desert off-road vehicle rides, camel rides, go-karting or sand sliding. After about 3–4 hours, take the transfer back to the original meeting point. The ticket list determines which activities are included.
Vehicles and camel rides may have queues, and windblown sand or operating arrangements can change the order. Check each activity's number of sessions and coverage against the one-day package when you buy it.
One night at camp
Arrive at the booked time, check your tent location, meals and evening activities, then join the desert activities included in your booking. Cloud cover and camp lighting affect stargazing. Leave the next day at the agreed transfer time; arrange your return ticket or pickup in advance.
A two-day trek
Follow the start point, finish point and camp sequence agreed with your guide or trekking club. Before booking, get the daily distances and estimated walking times, water and supply plan, overnight arrangements, weather-cancellation terms and evacuation pickup plan. Then decide whether the trek suits you.
Get there
Travel from Zhongwei to your camp
You can fly to Zhongwei Shapotou Airport or Yinchuan Hedong International Airport, or take a train to Zhongwei Station or Zhongwei South Station. Camps have different meeting addresses. Get the exact meeting point and pickup time from the operator before planning the trip from your airport or station.
Vehicles and camp transfers
Some camps provide pickup in town or from a designated meeting point; others require you to drive to the camp car park. Public transport usually gets you only to a town or station. Arrange the last leg through your booking. If you drive, park where the operator specifies, then use the vehicle arranged by the camp or guide to enter the activity area.
Know before you go
Walking, windblown sand and temperature changes
Walking on sand takes more effort than walking on firm ground, and sand can get into your shoes. Bring a hat, sunglasses and scarf, and wear shoes suitable for sand. The desert gets strong sun during the day and has a wide day-to-night temperature range, so pack sun protection and an extra warm layer for your travel dates.
Route and safety limits
Before leaving camp, confirm mobile coverage, your navigation method, meeting time and emergency contact. Use offline maps as a location aid, and follow your guide and arranged transfer. Do not drive an ordinary vehicle onto the dunes without approval from the camp or guide. Stay within organised activity areas at night.
Camp services and activities
Meals, accommodation, showers, transfers and desert activities may be charged separately. Before booking, confirm what is included, child eligibility and cancellation terms. Campfires, fireworks and evening shows are not available every day at every camp; follow the specific activity schedule and do not light fires or set off fireworks on your own.
