Huanglong Island

黄龙岛

Plan Huanglong Island with seasonal boat routes, village walking, limited supplies and no private cars on the island.

Plan at a glance

A separate island reached by boat

Huanglong Island's main villages include Nangang Village and Zhi'ao Village. Huanglong Passenger Pier is on the west side and is the main port. Much of the island is open, with no unified entrance ticket; some viewpoints have their own hours. Allow 2–3 hours for a short visit or half a day for a slower walk.

From Shanghai or Hangzhou, travellers usually first reach Shenjiawan Passenger Terminal. A direct route may operate in peak season; at other times you may need to reach Shengsi's main island first and transfer at Wulong Pier. Routes change with the season and the day's sailings, so do not plan from one fixed timetable.

Supplies and local transport

Arrange the island boat through a passenger channel such as “Shengsi Passenger Transport.” Book early around holidays. Private cars are not allowed on Huanglong Island. Local travel mainly uses shared electric bikes, walking and a limited taxi supply; food, shops and medicine are limited.

Choose your visit

Zhi'ao Village and coastal buildings

Zhi'ao Village and Daqianzuitou have stone houses, coast views and white buildings beside the sea. They suit visitors interested in village architecture, coastal photography and slow walking. Slopes and stone roads make the journey slower than a map suggests.

The buildings around Tingfeng Huahai can be a stop on the village route. Whether they are open, whether you may enter and where photography is allowed follow the day's arrangements. Do not block residents or enter private areas.

Nangang Village and Chiboshan

Nangang is the island's more concentrated fishing-village area, with village lanes and local fishing life. Chiboshan has sea views, rocks and a whale installation, making it possible to combine village scenes and open coastal views in one day.

The coast near Dongzuitou Lighthouse can work for late-afternoon light when the weather allows, but sunset is not fixed. In strong wind, stay away from cliff edges and do not linger on rocks.

Who is it for?

Huanglong suits visitors interested in stone-house villages, coastal roads, photography and a quiet pace, as well as those comfortable with limited supplies and changing boats. Visitors who need mature commercial facilities, dependable ride-hailing or extensive scenic-area services should lower their expectations or choose Shengsi's main island.

Build your day

A 2–3-hour short route

From Huanglong Passenger Pier, go first to Zhi'ao Village and Daqianzuitou, then continue to Nangang and finish at Chiboshan for the sea view and whale installation. Return to the pier along the planned route or by the vehicle arranged that day. This suits a half-day visit with the return boat already confirmed.

Cycling or driving is needed between some villages, and stone roads and slopes slow the route. If you arrive late, visit the farther stop first and use Nangang as a stop on the way back.

Half a day: villages, temple and Dongzuitou

Start at Zhi'ao Village and Daqianzuitou, continue to Nangang for a rest or meal, then go to Jiqing Zen Temple in the afternoon and finish near Dongzuitou Lighthouse. Opening areas at the temple, lighthouse and viewpoints follow the day's arrangements; a cliff sunset is only an option when the weather is suitable.

This route requires more local travel and walking. If the return boat is early, remove one stop. Do not wait for evening light and miss the vehicle or boarding time at the pier.

Get there

Choosing the boat route

A direct fast boat from Shenjiawan to Huanglong may operate in peak season. In the low season, you may need to travel from Shenjiawan to Shengsi's main island, take a bus to Wulong Pier and change to another boat. Direct and transfer routes have different sailing times, waiting points and schedules; confirm that the final arrival is Huanglong Passenger Pier.

Strong wind and fog can stop boats. Arrange the return boat and accommodation together. After arrival, confirm the island departure time; fix the last boat in advance rather than relying on a last-minute ticket.

Getting around the island

Shared electric bikes can be used where road conditions allow. Taxis are limited, and walking works for short village distances. Confirm the battery, parking point and return method before setting out, and arrange a vehicle for a remote viewpoint.

Leave a private car at the departure port, such as Shenjiawan; Huanglong is not suitable for bringing the car onto the island. Deal with large luggage at the pier rather than carrying it over a long stone-road section.

Know before you go

Supplies and spending

Commercial services are limited, and the small shop in Nangang may not provide a full range of supplies. Carry enough water, basic medicine and simple food. Confirm prices before ordering food; do not assume a property or restaurant will have a spare table at the last minute.

Stone roads, insects and sea wind are normal conditions here. Wear flat grippy shoes, use insect repellent and sun protection, and take a light jacket for the evening.

Weather and coastal safety

Sea colour, distant views and sunset depend on the weather. In fog, strong wind or slippery conditions, reduce time near cliffs and rocks. Stay behind barriers when photographing.

Buildings used for viewing, residents' homes and temple grounds have different boundaries. Do not enter private yards, closed buildings or dangerous coastal areas, and give way to vehicles and residents.

Boats and the return

The transfer between Huanglong and Shengsi's main island does not run at all times. Confirm the departure port and vehicle pickup before leaving. If weather changes the boats, handle accommodation, supplies and the return first, then decide whether to visit a distant stop.
