Plan at a glance
Plan the island crossing before the temples
Putuo Mountain Scenic Area covers the main island of Putuo Mountain. Most visitors enter from Zhujiajian Wugongzhi Wharf, take a passenger ferry for about 15–20 minutes, and then use yellow scenic shuttle buses and walking routes to connect the temples, coast, and viewpoints. Private cars and ride-hailing vehicles do not operate on the island, so plan the ferry, island transport, and return time together.
This page gives an island-wide overview of the entry process, the spread-out sights, and the realistic route choices. Puji Zen Temple, Fayu Zen Temple, Huiji Zen Temple, and the Nanhai Guanyin Statue each have their own access area and visiting focus. Choose between them according to your energy and the day's operating conditions rather than trying to fit everything into one day.
Tickets, reservations, and timing
The island admission ticket and regular return ferry need to be planned in advance. Adult combination tickets are separated into peak-season pricing for February–November and low-season pricing for December–January, with discounts for children and older visitors. Reservations are usually made under real-name registration through the WeChat mini program “普陀山一码通” (Putuo Mountain One-Code Pass); arranging this 1–3 days ahead is sensible.
Most of the main temples usually open from 06:00 to 17:30, while the Nanhai Guanyin Statue usually opens from 06:00 to 18:00. Incense-and-flower tickets are handled separately at each temple, and some accept cash only. Carrying small notes makes these stops easier.
How much time to allow
A quick route covering the main temples and the Nanhai Guanyin Statue takes about 4–5 hours. A first visit following a practical sequence through Puji Temple, Huiji Temple, Fayu Temple, the Nanhai Guanyin Statue, and Zizhulin usually takes about 7–8 hours. Expect steps, queues, and time waiting for shuttle buses; older visitors, children, and anyone unused to long walks should leave extra room.
Luojia Mountain requires a separate return boat from Putuo Mountain's Short Aunt Pier, so allow half a day for it. Its ferry, temple visit, and return plan should be counted separately from the main-island itinerary.

Temples, coastal views, and mountain walking
Putuo Mountain suits visitors interested in Buddhist architecture, temple spaces, and walking through an island landscape. Puji Zen Temple is in the central area, Fayu Zen Temple is built into the hillside, Huiji Zen Temple is on Foding Mountain, and the Nanhai Guanyin Statue stands at the island's southeastern end. Each stop has different transport and walking demands.
The coastal side includes places such as Chaoyin Cave, Baibu Beach, and Qianbu Beach, which can provide a sea-view break between temple visits. The Nanhai Guanyin Statue, the stone inscription on Foding Mountain, and Haiyin Pool in front of Puji Temple are suitable for architecture and coastal photography, but wind, light, and crowd levels affect how long you can comfortably stay.
Who this suits
This island suits visitors interested in Buddhist culture and historic buildings, as well as families and older travelers who can manage ferries, queues, scenic shuttle buses, and long walks. Visitors who enjoy island scenery will also find places to pause, but the main experience is the temple and walking network rather than a conventional beach holiday.
If people in your group have different energy levels, split the temples across two days or choose a shorter route served by the scenic shuttles. Foding Mountain's 1,088 steps, coastal paths, and uphill and downhill sections require non-slip shoes and time for breaks.
Build your day
A 4–5 hour main-sights route
From the wharf, take a scenic shuttle bus to the Foding Mountain Cableway Station. If the cableway is operating and the queue is reasonable, ride up to Huiji Zen Temple, then walk down the Xiangyun Road route via 1,088 steps to Fayu Zen Temple. Continue by shuttle bus to Puji Zen Temple, then to the Nanhai Guanyin Statue, and finally walk back toward the wharf.
This route combines Foding Mountain, Fayu Temple, Puji Temple, and the Nanhai Guanyin Statue, with several transfers and a long stair section. Confirm the cableway, scenic shuttles, and return ferry arrangements for the day before setting out. If one section involves a long wait, remove one stop and protect the time needed to return.
A 7–8 hour one-way route
For a first visit, walk from the wharf to Puji Zen Temple and visit the central temple first. Then take a shuttle bus to the Foding Mountain Cableway Station, visit Huiji Zen Temple, walk down the 1,088 steps to Fayu Zen Temple, and take a shuttle bus to the Nanhai Guanyin Statue. Finish by walking through the Zizhulin and Baibu Beach area back toward the wharf.
This route reduces backtracking, but still includes steps, waiting for buses, and temple queues. If you do not want to walk the 1,088 steps, separate Huiji Zen Temple and Fayu Zen Temple into different visits or use the cableway and scenic shuttles available that day. Do not add northern or eastern sights when the return time is already close.
Evening and Luojia Mountain plans
Puji Zen Temple has an evening activity arrangement, but evening access and island transport need to be confirmed for the day. If you plan to stay after dark, confirm the last ferry, scenic shuttle closing time, and your accommodation location before adding the evening program.
Luojia Mountain is reached by boat from Putuo Mountain's Short Aunt Pier, and the island has one main walking route. Set aside separate time for the return boat and the island visit. It works better as a half-day plan than as a rushed addition to a dense main-island temple route.
Get there
Reaching Putuo Mountain from Zhoushan Island
From Zhoushan Putuoshan Airport, take the airport bus or a taxi to Zhujiajian Wugongzhi Wharf. From Ningbo Railway Station, walk to the nearby South Bus Station and take a bus to Wugongzhi Wharf. Drivers should leave their cars in the wharf parking area, then walk or follow the on-site signs to the passenger terminal.
Wugongzhi Wharf is the main entry point for Putuo Mountain's main island. After the ferry crossing, choose a scenic shuttle according to the day's stops and routes. There is no metro on the island, and private cars and ride-hailing vehicles cannot replace the scenic transport system.
Moving around the island
The island mainly relies on yellow scenic shuttle buses and walking. Short shuttle rides are charged by section. During public holidays and Guanyin festival periods, queues for the buses may grow, and walking between nearby stops can sometimes give you better control over the schedule.
Private cars cannot be driven onto Putuo Mountain. Parking at the wharf is tight on weekends and in peak season, so arrange parking and the entry queue early and go directly to the passenger terminal by following the on-site signs.
Know before you go
Crowds, cash, and supplies
Crowds and shuttle queues increase around the 19th day of the second, sixth, and ninth lunar months, as well as during public holidays. Weekdays or earlier entry times usually make the visit easier, but an early route still needs to fit the first ferry, temple opening times, and your group's energy levels.
Supplies and food on the island usually cost more than on the mainland. Bring enough drinking water and simple snacks. Incense-and-flower tickets, some on-site purchases, and donation boxes may require cash, so carry small notes. Handle incense and worship according to each temple's entrance instructions, and do not buy services from people who approach you at the wharf or on the roadside.
Steps, weather, and safety
The main Putuo Mountain routes include mountain paths, stone steps, coastal walks, and scenic-shuttle transfers. Sea wind, strong sun, and slippery surfaces after rain can all slow you down. Wear non-slip shoes, choose shorter routes for older visitors and children, and do not cross guardrails for a coastal photo.
Ferry, cableway, scenic shuttle, and temple operations can change with weather, crowds, or on-site coordination. Leave time for the return ferry and the final island transfer, especially if you plan to walk the 1,088 steps, visit Luojia Mountain, or stay for an evening activity.
Nearby planning
Putuo Mountain's main island, Luojia Mountain, and Guanyin Dharma Realm in Zhujiajian have separate transport and ticket systems. After leaving the island, you can arrange food and a break in Shenjiamen or Zhujiajian before continuing to another attraction. Check tickets, boats, and return arrangements separately for each island and scenic area.
