Plan at a glance
A small island that needs its own boat plan
Huaniao Island is in Huaniao Township, Shengsi County. Huaniao Village is where accommodation and the main street are concentrated, while Lighthouse Village and Huaniao Lighthouse are on another part of the island. Most local travel is on foot or by sightseeing vehicle; the island does not have a normal motor-vehicle road network for visitors.
The reference adult island ticket is CNY 85. Most areas are open throughout the day, but boat tickets and the number of visitors are limited, so boats, weather and accommodation need to be planned together. Allow about 3 hours for a short visit; stay one or two nights if you want to include the lighthouse, villages and a sunrise viewpoint.
The lighthouse means slopes and walking
The main road, known as the Mata Line, connects the village, beaches and lighthouse direction. Nearby stops around Huaniao Village are usually walkable. Reaching the lighthouse requires a climb or a sightseeing vehicle, and the vehicle's stops, service and sunset-period fare follow the day's arrangements.

Huaniao Lighthouse and Lighthouse Village
Huaniao Lighthouse was built in 1870 and is one of the island's older maritime landmarks. The viewing area around it is suitable for seeing the sea and late-afternoon light. Whether the lighthouse itself is open, where visitors may view it and where the sightseeing vehicle stops follow the open-area instructions.
The lighthouse suits visitors interested in maritime architecture, island history and photography. It is some distance from the accommodation area, so do not estimate the return using a straight-line map distance.
The Mata Line, Nanao Beach and the village
The Mata Line shows the island road and coast, while Nanao Beach is suitable for a short stop. Huaniao Village's blue-and-white buildings, main street and public waterfront spaces are better for a slower walk and require less effort than the lighthouse route.
Slopes and wind can change the walking pace. Visitors who like to walk and photograph as they go will find it easier to split the village and lighthouse into two sections.
Foshoushi, Zhi'ai Book House and the Xiziyang trail
Foshoushi and Zhi'ai Book House are on higher or coastal ground and can be chosen as early-morning viewpoints. The Xiziyang fitness trail suits visitors who want more walking. Sunrise, sea colour and light depend on the weather, so treat these places as optional viewing sections.
Build your day
About 3 hours: a short route
Leave from the accommodation area and walk to Nanao Beach. Continue along the Mata Line to Mata Green Park, then use the sightseeing vehicle according to its service to reach Huaniao Lighthouse and return to the village. If time allows, look at the village buildings and coast on the way back.
This route separates walking from the vehicle section and suits a first visit or a half-day stop. The lighthouse vehicle may have a queue near sunset, so leave time for waiting on the return.
One or two days: separate the lighthouse and early views
Arrive in the afternoon, check in, then take the sightseeing vehicle toward the lighthouse and stay there according to the weather. The next morning, choose Foshoushi or Zhi'ai Book House before returning to Huaniao Village. If your departure boat is early, shorten the morning route and reach the pier first.
When the weather is poor, use the village, main street and open indoor spaces as the main visit. Do not keep walking coastal slopes just to pursue a particular sunrise.
Longer walks
Treat the Xiziyang fitness trail as a separate half-day activity rather than adding it to the lighthouse return. Judge the slope, wind and supply conditions against your energy that day; children and visitors with limited mobility should choose a shorter section.
Get there
From Shanghai via Shenjiawan
From Shanghai, travellers usually take a coach from Nanpu Bridge Passenger Station to Shenjiawan, then change to a passenger boat for Huaniao Island. Calculate the coach, waiting time and sea crossing together, and arrange the boat through a passenger channel such as the “You Shengsi” mini-program.
Huaniao boats are affected by wind and waves, so the return ticket matters as much as the outbound. Do not put non-refundable accommodation ahead of the boat plan; leave room for a changed date or a longer stay.
Walking and sightseeing vehicles on the island
The island has no normal motor-vehicle network. Walk around Huaniao Village and use a sightseeing vehicle or a longer walk toward the lighthouse. A shared electric bike can help with short trips, but its cost, parking points and range depend on the day's service.
Large luggage makes the pier and uphill approach harder. Confirm luggage or accommodation transfer arrangements in advance; do not assume a sightseeing vehicle will be waiting when you arrive.
Know before you go
Boat and weather buffer
The number of island tickets is limited, especially at weekends and in high season. Arrange them early. Strong wind and fog can change boat times; confirm the boat before departure and before the return. If a sailing is cancelled, the lighthouse and sunrise route must move with it.
Weather affects sunset, sunrise and distant views. Carry a windproof jacket, and stay on open paths away from cliff edges when photographing the coast.
Costs and food
The island ticket, sightseeing vehicle, food and accommodation are separate expenses. The lighthouse vehicle can be especially busy in the evening; confirm whether your ticket is one-way or return and which stops it covers. Island food is usually more expensive than on the main island, so read the menu and charging method before ordering.
Supplies are less plentiful than on the main island. Bring water and simple food for a long walk. Plan night activities around lighting, roads and your accommodation rather than around the possibility of seeing a particular phenomenon.
Walking and the return boat
The lighthouse, Foshoushi and Zhi'ai Book House involve slopes. Wear grippy shoes. In low light at dawn or dusk, allow time to return to the sightseeing-vehicle stop and accommodation; do not walk beyond the last transport just for a photograph.
Huaniao, Shengshan and Gouqi are separate islands. Island-hopping requires another boat and port plan. If you are leaving Huaniao that day, do not put another island connection in the final few hours before departure.
