Plan at a glance
Base yourself in Badain Jaran Town, Alxa Right Banner
Alxa Right Banner (阿拉善右旗), especially Badain Jaran Town (巴丹吉林镇), is the local base. Its routes and transfer arrangements differ from the Tengger Desert in Alxa Left Banner and Tonghu near Zhongwei.
Allow half a day if you are visiting Badan Lake only. A trip into the desert hinterland requires an off-road or hiking operator and usually takes multiple days; it is not a route to follow using ordinary road navigation.

Choose your visit
A regular visit to Badan Lake
Badan Lake (巴丹湖) is suitable for a short lakeside visit. Walk in open areas and look at the dunes; confirm at the entrance whether activities such as camel rides or sand sliding are running that day.
Dunes and lakes in a World Heritage site
In 2024, UNESCO inscribed “Badain Jaran Desert—Towers of Sand and Lakes” (巴丹吉林沙漠—沙山湖泊群) on the World Heritage List. The property records dunes with about 460 m of vertical relief and approximately 144 desert lakes, showing the landscape where high dunes rise among desert lakes.
The Inner Mongolia forestry department gives Bilutu Peak's elevation as about 1,611 m above sea level. That is an elevation; 460 m is the dunes' relative height. Whether a deeper route reaches Bilutu Peak depends on the operator's itinerary.
Lake colors, including at Dagetu Red Lake (达格图红海子), vary with the season, light, and water conditions; an aerial image may not match what you see from the ground. The red lake, Badan Lake, and Sumujilin Lake (苏木吉林湖) in Badain Jaran are on different routes and use different bases from Wulan Lake (乌兰湖) and Moon Lake (月亮湖) on Tengger Desert routes.
Temples and springs
Some deeper routes may include Badain Jaran Temple (巴丹吉林庙) or the Yinderitu Sacred Spring (音德日图神泉). Follow on-site rules at religious sites; the operator's itinerary determines whether these stops are included and how long they last.
Build your day
A half-day visit to Badan Lake
From Badain Jaran Town or the visitor center, first confirm which roads and vehicles are permitted that day. If the regular visitor route to Badan Lake is open, follow the designated road, enjoy a short lakeside visit, and return along the permitted route. Do not continue into the desert hinterland in an ordinary private car.
A deeper trip by off-road vehicle or on foot
A deeper trip may connect several lakes and dunes; the order depends on weather, road conditions, and that day's plan. Follow the itinerary provided by the operator.
Before staying at a desert camp or hiking overnight, find out what is provided for sleeping gear, meals and water, toilets, warm clothing, and emergency evacuation. Climbing high dunes takes extra effort; assess your group's fitness and follow the guide's instructions.
Return to town
Before departure, agree on the latest return time to town and how to make contact if you lose signal. Mobile coverage may fail on deeper routes. Do not leave the group or delay the vehicle convoy for photos or a climb.
Get there
Reach Alxa Right Banner, then arrange local transport
First travel to Badain Jaran Town in Alxa Right Banner, then use your transfer arrangements to reach Badan Lake or the meeting point for your desert trip. Services from transport hubs such as Jinchang and Zhangye can change, so arrange your arrival time and pick-up with the operator after booking your off-road trip.
Drive only on roads where it is permitted
Whether a regular road is open to Badan Lake, or a transfer is required at the entrance, depends on current management arrangements. Do not take an ordinary private car into the desert hinterland. Deeper routes require a professional local vehicle and guide familiar with the terrain; a phone map is not a substitute for the lead guide's navigation.
Know before you go
Confirm every cost and accommodation detail
Before booking, ask for a written itinerary and itemized quote covering passenger count, route, meals and accommodation, equipment, insurance, extra charges, and cancellation terms. Check ticket prices and peak-season availability for your dates.
Prepare for rough travel and limited supplies
Off-road sections may be bumpy for extended periods. If you are prone to motion sickness, ask your doctor or the operator how to prepare. Bring enough water, personal medication, sun protection, and warm clothing. Do not assume there will be a shop, mobile signal, or medical services at every lake or camp.
Follow drone and on-site rules
Dunes may interfere with drone signals, and flights are also subject to local airspace and scenic-area rules. Do not launch until you have confirmed that the flight is legal and safe. Never fly over a ridge or leave your group just to get an aerial shot.
