Plan at a glance
A desert hinterland route from Alxa Left Banner
The Tengger Desert spans several regions, and access depends on the area and tour product. Five Lakes routes from Alxa Left Banner (阿拉善左旗) use different designated routes. Follow the meeting point, transfers, and itinerary listed for your booking.
A 2026 safety notice for hiking the Five Lakes route lists one designated route: Dream Desert Park gate (梦想沙漠公园牌楼)–Little Swan Lake (小天鹅湖)–Wulan Lake (乌兰湖). Little Swan Lake on this route is not automatically the separate Tengger Desert Swan Lake Scenic Area (腾格里沙漠天鹅湖风景区). Use the entrance, pick-up point, ticket, and return plan for the specific product you book; tickets and services for the separate scenic area do not automatically apply to the Five Lakes route.
Different desert areas use different bases
Desert tours near Zhongwei and Tonghu Grassland each have their own entrances and operating arrangements; their packages and transfers do not automatically apply to the Alxa Left Banner hinterland. Badain Jaran Desert is in Alxa Right Banner, with its own town base and expedition routes. It does not share a starting point with the Tengger Five Lakes trip.

Choose your visit
See lakes and dunes along your confirmed route
If your booked route passes Little Swan Lake or another lake stop, observe the water, dunes, and shoreline vegetation only in permitted areas. Water, vegetation, and ground conditions change with the season and weather; the color and composition seen in photos are not guaranteed.
The name “Little Swan Lake” does not guarantee that swans will be present. Keep your distance when watching birds, stay out of sensitive shoreline areas, and do not feed wildlife.
Five Lakes routes vary by tour group
Off-road and hiking products may visit different lakes in a different order. The notice's Little Swan Lake–Wulan Lake route is for hikers, not off-road tours; ask the operator which lakes are included and the planned stop times.
For other desert experiences, use the relevant operator and base in Zhongwei, at Tonghu Grassland, or in Alxa Right Banner for Badain Jaran; they are separate trips.
Build your day
Confirm the meeting point and route first
Use the pick-up point and departure time for your specific tour, along with its lake stops and expected return time. The 2026 notice's Dream Desert Park gate–Little Swan Lake–Wulan Lake route is for hikers; it is not the meeting address for every off-road tour or permission to enter the desert independently.
Off-road tours and hikes move at different speeds. Hikers should follow the designated route and stay separate from vehicle tracks; learn the distance, water points, campsites, and evacuation plan before setting out. Passengers should note their assigned vehicle and staff. Use the operator's itinerary rather than piecing a route together from online photos.
Follow the operator's stop plan
At each lake, view the water, dunes, and vegetation only from permitted areas; stop lengths follow the booked itinerary.
Agree on the return plan
Desert routes are not suitable for changing direction spontaneously. Before departure, agree on the latest return time, what to do if the weather worsens, and where the vehicle will meet you. Do not delay the group to add another lake or leave the guide to explore on your own.
Get there
Connect from a city to your local operator
Travel to the transport hub named for your booked product in Alxa Left Banner or Zhongwei. Some tours may offer pick-up from Yinchuan, but not every product departs from Yinchuan Railway Station. Use the meeting address and pick-up time in your booking to plan your arrival and return.
Do not drive into the desert hinterland on your own
Travel by ordinary roads to the meeting point listed for your product. From there, a local operator familiar with the route should arrange the vehicle or guided hike. Do not use ordinary navigation to drive across the sand, or use a Zhongwei scenic-area car park, the Tonghu Grassland entrance, or the Alxa Right Banner base for Badain Jaran as the destination for the Five Lakes route.
Know before you go
Confirm every fee and service
Tickets, guides, off-road vehicles, hikes, camps, and temporary access charges may be billed separately. Ask for an itemized price covering transport, meals and water, equipment, camping, and extra charges. A ticket for the separate scenic area is not automatically a Five Lakes route fee.
Consider bumps, walking, and weather
For a commercial off-road tour, choose an operator and vehicle that meet local operating requirements. Check the vehicle's operating markings, insurance, route, and return plan. Long off-road drives can be bumpy; anyone prone to motion sickness, children, and older travelers should ask about the duration and options to leave the route early.
Prepare for weak signal and limited supplies
Mobile coverage may be weak in the desert hinterland. Save an offline map, your guide's phone number, and meeting details before leaving, and carry enough water and personal essentials. Drinks, toilets, and campsite services by the lakes are not guaranteed; prepare as if there will be no reliable supplies.
