Plan at a glance
The National Gate and border river are signature sights
Arxan Port Scenic Area (阿尔山口岸景区) lies on the China–Mongolia border, where the National Gate (中国国门) stands as its most recognizable landmark. Follow the visitor route for views of the gate, the border river, and the surrounding frontier landscape. The scenic area is managed separately from the port's border-crossing zone; ordinary sightseeing follows the visitor entrance and route.
Menshan offers a summit viewpoint
The National Gate building is a close-up landmark for viewing and photos. Opened in 2026, Menshan Scenic Area (门山景区) adds woodland trails and a summit viewing platform. The No. 1382 Scenic Stop (1382驿站), named after the nearby border marker, is another point of interest along the visitor route. Allow separate time for the hill walk and the port area's shuttle ride.
Sightseeing and crossing into Mongolia are separate plans
The scenic-area ticket and shuttle bus cover only visitor areas. They do not provide permission to cross the border. If you plan to enter Mongolia, research separate cross-border travel arrangements, travel documents, and border procedures; a sightseeing route is not an itinerary for leaving China.

Choose your visit
A short route focused on the gate and border river
For a visit centered on the National Gate and border river, take the scenic-area shuttle to the main viewing area, then walk along the open route. The visitor service center's route map can help you choose stops. Allow time for photos, river views, and returning to the shuttle stop.
Add the Menshan climb if you have the energy
Opened on May 19, 2026, Menshan Scenic Area is part of the port scenic area and has woodland trails and a summit platform. Wear shoes with good grip and allow time for the uphill and downhill walk and breaks. Use the day's route map to connect the Menshan entrance with shuttle stops.
Stay within visitor boundaries when viewing or taking photos
Visit only areas open to tourists and follow barriers, security checks, and staff instructions. Border facilities, the border-river bridge, and the port control zone each have their own access boundaries. Follow on-site rules for photography, long-lens equipment, and drones.
Build your day
Start at the visitor service center and check the day's stops
Buy your ticket at the port visitor service center and check the day's route map before deciding the order for the National Gate, border river, and Menshan. The map helps connect shuttle rides with the hill walk and shows how to return to the service center.
Keep two to three hours flexible
For a half-day visit, see the National Gate and border river first, then add the Menshan climb if time and fitness allow. If you skip the climb, spend longer on the views and photos. Driving, walking, weather, and queues affect the total time, so avoid planning departure too tightly.
Do not squeeze it into the same day as the southern attractions
The port is west of Arxan city, while Bailang Peak and Aolunbukan are in another direction. A half day at the port is usually more comfortable. If you combine it with southern attractions, estimate both drives on your map before choosing the order.
Get there
Navigate from Wenquan Street using your actual route
Government information places the port about 43 kilometers from Wenquan Street. Set Arxan Port Visitor Service Center (阿尔山口岸游客服务中心) as your map destination. If driving yourself or traveling by private car with a driver, check the route and travel time from your actual accommodation.
Check the visitor-center and shuttle arrangements
As of October 2026, Ctrip showed CNY 50 for scenic-area admission plus CNY 20 for the shuttle bus, for a reference total of CNY 70. Ticket types and prices depend on the purchase date. If driving, check parking and shuttle arrangements at the visitor center; if taking the shuttle, include the return service in your schedule.
Arrange transport, documents, and a return trip
The port is about 43 kilometers from Wenquan Street. Drive yourself or hire a private car with a driver; if you are not driving, agree on both the outbound and return rides with your accommodation. International visitors should carry a passport and confirm whether it is accepted for entry, reservations, and ticket checks. Confirm which payment methods are available.
Know before you go
Check ticket prices for your travel date
As of October 20, 2026, Ctrip listed CNY 50 for admission and CNY 20 for the shuttle bus, or CNY 70 for an adult ticket with shuttle. This is a platform reference price. Buy the ticket type that applies to your travel date; child and student discounts depend on that day's ticket conditions.
Check hours and temporary arrangements on the day
As of October 20, 2026, Ctrip listed opening hours of 08:30–16:00. The last entry time, final shuttle, and whether the Menshan area is open can affect your visit. Check the scenic area's notice before setting out and plan your return accordingly.
Border sightseeing does not include crossing into Mongolia
A standard scenic-area ticket covers only open visitor attractions and does not include border crossing. A cross-border trip requires separate official arrangements, along with the required travel documents and procedures. International visitors should check that they are eligible for the route and have the right documents. Do not enter the port control zone or cross border barriers.
