Choose your visit
“Xibei Jubu” and “Beijiang Mingzhu”
“Xibei Jubu” (西北巨埠) introduces Baotou’s modern development, while “Beijiang Mingzhu” (北疆明珠) presents the city today. These exhibitions suit visitors interested in the city’s industrialization and local history.
“Jiuyuan Changge”: Baotou’s ancient history
“Jiuyuan Changge” (九原长歌) traces Baotou’s history from prehistory through the Ming and Qing periods, making it a priority if you have limited time. Look for a Yuan blue-and-white jar with a scrolling-peony design and a roof tile inscribed with “Chanyu Tianjiang” (单于天降); current displays may change.
Yinshan rock art and thangka
“Shihua Shishuo” (史话石说) presents Yinshan rock art, while “Puti Gongqiao” (菩提工巧) features thangka and other crafts. These topics offer a different perspective from the local-history exhibition. Check the current gallery guide for their locations.
“Lucheng Wangshi” folk culture exhibition
The “Lucheng Wangshi—Baotou Folk Culture Exhibition” (鹿城往事——包头民俗文化展) explores local folk culture. Its gallery location and opening arrangements are shown in the museum guide.
Collections to look for
A Han-period yellow-glazed ceramic zun vessel decorated with mythical beasts is another collection highlight. Objects may rotate or be on loan, so check the gallery guide and labels to see what is currently displayed; follow the museum’s labels for collection details and stories.
For a separate visit to a walled temple-and-residence complex outside central Baotou, see Meidaizhao Monastery.
Build your day
1.5–2 hours: prioritize the core exhibitions
After entering, check the current gallery guide and start with “Jiuyuan Changge” to learn about Baotou’s history from prehistory through the Ming and Qing periods. If time allows, continue to the “Shihua Shishuo” rock-art exhibition or “Puti Gongqiao” thangka exhibition. Follow the actual gallery locations rather than hurrying between floors to see everything.
2–3 hours: from ancient history to modern Baotou
Begin with “Jiuyuan Changge,” then visit “Xibei Jubu” and “Beijiang Mingzhu” according to their gallery locations to learn about modern commerce and industrialization. After that, choose the Yinshan rock-art, thangka and “Lucheng Wangshi” folk-culture exhibitions that interest you. Adjust your walking order using the day’s gallery guide.
Choose by exhibit and leave time for stamps
If you have a specific object in mind, first check its gallery and whether that exhibition is open, then plan your visit. The museum’s cultural-creative area offers stamp collecting; bring a notebook if you want to collect them, and stop there after the exhibitions to avoid walking back and forth.
