How to Visit
1

Arrange transport to the official visitor center

Start from Chenzhou city or Chenzhou West Railway Station, and use a taxi, ride-hailing car, shared car, or private car to reach Gaoyiling Visitor Center or Gaoyiling Main Gate.

Tip:This is not an easy downtown stop, so plan your return transport before you go.
2

Use an official entrance

The South Gate and North Gate are both normal choices for entering the scenic area.

Tip:Village-road entrances such as the West Gate can involve confusing navigation, uneven road conditions, and missed core sections.
3

Follow the main Danxia walking route

Allow 3-4 hours for Lianyi Bridge, Dengtian Cloud Ladder, Meilitan, Heart Viewpoint, the cliff walkway, Dragon Ridge, and Shuanglong Lake.

Tip:The route covers the main Danxia ridges and lake views, but the stairs, slopes, and sun exposure all add real physical effort.
4

Time Dragon Ridge without rushing the exit

If you want softer light, enter later in the afternoon and aim to reach the Dragon Ridge area when the red rock and green water are easier to see together.

Tip:Do not compress the route too much, because you still need time to descend and leave the scenic area.
5

Treat the visit as a real hiking route

Gaoyiling is a Danxia walking scenic area, not just a photo stop. After rain, red mud, rock surfaces, and steep steps can become slippery.

Tip:Stay on formal paths and avoid lingering near cliff edges for photos.
Highlights
  • Red Danxia ridges surrounded by green water create Gaoyiling's most recognizable landscape.
  • Dragon Ridge is one of the core viewing sections, with winding ridgelines and lake views.
  • Dengtian Cloud Ladder is steep and visually dramatic, but it requires knee strength and stamina.
  • The cliff walkway gives wide views over the valley, lake, and red rock formations.
  • The Giant Stone area is relatively easier and works well for a short photo stop if you do not want constant climbing.
Insider Tips

Wear non-slip athletic shoes. Avoid slippers, sandals, or flat-soled white sneakers; red mud and stone steps can be very slippery when wet.

Prepare seriously for sun exposure. There is limited shade, so sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, and enough water matter, especially in summer.

Food and drinks inside the scenic area may cost more, so bring water and simple snacks without overloading your bag.

If traveling with older visitors or children, lower the pace and do not force the full route; slopes, steps, and sun can make the visit harder than expected.

Do not take risks for shortcuts, informal paths, or unofficial photo spots. Gaoyiling is worth visiting for its landforms and walkway views, not for trading safety for one picture.
