How to Visit
1

Drive or hire a private car from central Dunhuang

The site is about 18–20 km away, and navigation to Dunhuang Silk Road Heritage City leads to the parking area. It is a Gobi film and architectural replica park, not an original historic site.

Tip:Plan it as a short photography-focused visit rather than an original-heritage visit.
2

Walk the entrance-area photo stops before considering the shuttle

Admission is CNY 60, or CNY 30 for students. The optional sightseeing shuttle costs CNY 10-20, but most of the strongest photo positions are close to the entrance; a full walking visit takes about 1.5-2 hours.

Tip:Skip the shuttle unless heat, mobility, or extra distance would make walking difficult.
3

Follow the main photography stops in late afternoon

Photograph the Greek temple, Thousand Buddha Caves and giant Buddha head, Shazhou gate tower, Sphinx, then the Hall of Supreme Harmony or Daming Palace. The best light is usually 09:00-11:00 or 17:00-19:00.

Tip:There are limited supplies inside, so bring enough drinking water before entering.
Highlights
  • A Gobi setting combining Central Plains, Western Regions, and overseas architectural styles for film-like scenes.
  • White colonnades at the Greek temple suit wide-angle and low-angle photos.
  • The Thousand Buddha Caves, giant Buddha head, and Shazhou gate tower create strong scale contrasts.
  • The Hall of Supreme Harmony and Daming Palace suit Hanfu or solid-colour clothing.
Insider Tips

White, red, and black solid-colour clothing separates clearly from the yellow-brown Gobi background.

Use doorways, colonnades, and building lines as foregrounds instead of standing in the middle of open ground.

Visitors focused on authentic heritage rather than photography may prefer to treat this as an optional stop.

Bring a hat, sunglasses, sun protection, and water from town rather than relying on purchases inside.
