Plan at a glance
Scenic-area scope, ticket, and opening hours
Chuxi Tulou Cluster is in Chuxi Village, Xiayang Town, Yongding District, Longyan, Fujian. The usual entrance is the Chuxi Tulou Visitor Service Centre. The common adult ticket is CNY 65 and covers the viewpoint and the main tulou visits. Entering Jiqing Building usually also requires identity verification, so do not treat the opening arrangements for different buildings as interchangeable.
The usual opening period is 8:30–17:00, although summer hours may extend to 19:00. The core tulou may already be closed later in the day. First-time visitors should plan to buy a daytime ticket and allow 1.5–3 hours; do not change the route in search of an evening free-entry option or an unofficial entrance.
The scenic area includes about 1 kilometre of uphill road, and the viewpoint requires about 124 steps. It suits visitors who enjoy an intact village setting and photography. Older adults, children, pregnant travellers, and anyone with limited mobility should decide in advance whether to use the sightseeing vehicle and reduce unnecessary uphill walking.

Jiqing Building and the Chuxi cluster
Jiqing Building is the core building at Chuxi. Its timber staircases, circular corridors, and central courtyard make up the main visit. It was built relatively early, and the visible timber and domestic scale reward a slower look, but access to floors and private areas still follows on-site management. Do not turn residents' floors into a fixed public route.
The viewpoint is on the hill behind the cultural square and looks over the three round and one square tulou, the surrounding hills, and the terraced fields. Yuqing Building, Shanqing Building, and other village tulou provide comparisons across different periods and exterior treatments. This makes Chuxi a good fit for architecture enthusiasts, photographers, and travellers who want to avoid the busiest scenic areas.
Who this suits
Chuxi suits visitors willing to walk slopes, wait for public transport, or drive into a rural village. It can also work for families who want to look around slowly during the day. The viewpoint and village paths are not smooth city pavements, so shoes, water, and the return plan directly affect the visit.
If you only want the overall view, concentrate your time around the cultural square, viewpoint, and Jiqing Building. If you want to walk through more of the cluster, leave extra time for Shitiao Bridge, Yuqing Building, and Wuxi Bridge; do not try to complete the full route within the time of a one-hour short visit.
Build your day
About 1.5 hours: a short route
After entering from the visitor centre, take the sightseeing vehicle or walk to the cultural square. Continue to the rear-hill viewpoint for the full view of the cluster, return to the area around Jiqing Building, and then leave on the original route. A common sightseeing-vehicle fare is CNY 5 one way or CNY 10 return. Whether it is worth paying depends on your group's energy and the vehicles operating that day.
The viewpoint has about 124 steps, so judge the group's physical condition before starting, especially with older adults or children. Jiqing Building requires a second identity check. Confirm the verification point and return direction after entering rather than discovering at the end that you need to queue or show identification again.
About 2.5–3 hours: a complete route
For a first visit, use the sequence “cultural square—viewpoint—Shitiao Bridge—Yuqing Building—Jiqing Building—Gengqing Building or Shengqing Building—Wuxi Bridge.” Start with the overall view, return to the village to see the buildings open that day, and finish with a walk beside the stream.
Some tulou inside the village are still private homes. Do not enter an upper floor just because a building looks open from outside. If someone in your group becomes tired, finish at Jiqing Building or the cultural square instead of forcing a visit to every building.
Linking Chuxi with other Yongding tulou
Self-driving visitors can combine Chuxi with Gaobei, Hekeng, or Xiayang Town as separate parts of a day, but each scenic area requires a driving leg. Public-transport returns from Chuxi are difficult. If you plan to continue elsewhere on the same day, confirm the vehicle leaving Chuxi first and only then decide whether to add another stop.
Get there
Driving and parking
Drivers can navigate to “Chuxi Tulou Ticket Office” or the parking area. The approach is mainly on paved roads. During holidays, traffic may be diverted between 10:00 and 16:00, so you may need to park outside the scenic area and walk in. Follow the on-site direction and do not drive onto a village road that is closed to visitors.
Parking near the entrance commonly costs about CNY 10 per visit and may require QR-code payment when leaving. Holiday parking can become crowded, so allow time for the queue and for retrieving the car. Do not schedule the last public-transport connection immediately after parking payment.
High-speed rail, buses, and the return
From Longyan Station, travel to the old Longyan Coach Station and take a bus to the Chuxi entrance. The bus journey commonly takes about 1.5–2 hours and usually requires advance ticket purchase. After getting off, you still need to walk or share a car into the village. Return vehicles are particularly difficult to find at short notice, so arrange the return before setting out.
Chuxi is remote, and public transport is not a turn-up-and-go city service. If you are travelling with older adults, children, or large luggage, self-driving or a pre-booked chartered car makes it easier to control the viewpoint, sightseeing-vehicle, and return times.
Know before you go
Identity checks and building access
Chuxi is a ticketed scenic area with identity verification. Core points such as Jiqing Building follow on-site ticket-checking procedures. Other tulou may remain private homes, so do not generalise one building's opening arrangement to the whole cluster or look for an unofficial way upstairs.
The sightseeing vehicle only covers part of the uphill or internal movement. It does not replace every village-road walk. When buying tickets, confirm the vehicle coverage and boarding points, then plan your stops around the route operating that day.
Steps, supplies, and the return trip
The viewpoint has a long flight of steps, and stone paths become slippery in rain. Wear non-slip sports shoes and carry water and simple food. Food choices inside the scenic area are limited and prices may be high. If you need a full meal, it is usually easier to arrange one in Xiayang Town when driving, but do not squeeze the return timing to do so.
Mobile ride-hailing and public transport in the mountains are both unreliable. Before leaving, confirm the vehicle, parking area, and final stretch of the route again. Do not delay the descent for an unconfirmed waterfall path or a private upper-floor space.
