Plan at a glance
A wider village and building cluster
Gaobei Tulou Cluster is in Gaobei Village, Gaotou Township, Yongding District, Longyan, Fujian. It is a larger village and building group rather than a single stop. Tulou King Scenic Area is one of the visitor-facing ticket and service names used here, while Chengqi Building is the main building. The three names overlap geographically, but they should not be treated as three separate attractions requiring repeated tickets.
The common Gaobei ticket is CNY 50. If you visit the Tulou Prince Scenic Area around Hongkeng on the same trip, a common combined ticket costs CNY 98 and is valid for 3 days. The area usually operates from 8:00–18:00, and Chengqi Building is best visited during the day. Allow about 1.5–2.5 hours for the viewpoint, Chengqi, Shize, and Qiaofu Buildings.
Gaobei suits architecture enthusiasts, photographers, and families who want to compare different building forms in one village. The main route can be completed on foot, but reaching other tulou districts requires a vehicle. Do not treat all of “Fujian Tulou” as one compact walking attraction.

Round buildings, square buildings, and the village panorama
Start at the village-entrance viewpoint for the full Gaobei panorama, then visit Chengqi, Shize, and Qiaofu Buildings. Chengqi's four-ring round plan shows scale and concentric space; Shize's square plan creates a direct contrast; Qiaofu's Chinese-Western details suit a quieter architectural stop.
Gaobei is useful because several building forms can be compared in one village, rather than because of one isolated Chengqi photograph. The small rear-hill viewpoint adds an exterior view, but it requires more walking and steps. With older adults or children, decide whether it is worth the extra climb.
Who this suits
Gaobei is a good fit for first-time Yongding visitors, architecture photographers, and travellers who want to avoid changing scenic areas repeatedly. For an empty-looking view or softer light, you can arrive before 8:00 or schedule some exterior photographs after 16:00, but lower crowds are not guaranteed.
If you only want the main building, the short route is enough. If you want the cluster's broader relationship, leave separate time for Shize, Qiaofu, and the viewpoints. Opening and entry arrangements can differ by building, so do not use one building's experience to predict another's.
Build your day
About 1–1.5 hours: a quick route
Start at the village-entrance viewpoint, photograph the Gaobei panorama, continue to Chengqi Building, and then go to Shize Building for the square-and-round comparison before returning. The route is short and easy to follow, which suits a tight schedule or a visit with older adults.
Chengqi Building follows the scenic area's ticket-check process. Before leaving, confirm that you have completed the areas open that day. Do not add paid upstairs access, resident guiding, or unofficial equipment to the fixed plan just to obtain a higher corridor view.
About 2–3 hours: a cluster route
With more time, use the sequence “viewpoint—Qiaofu Building—Chengqi Building—Shize Building—small rear-hill viewpoint.” This starts with the village panorama, compares round, square, and Chinese-Western details, and finishes with an additional exterior view from higher ground.
The route is mainly on foot, with steps both inside and outside the buildings. In rain or strong midday heat, you can drop the rear-hill viewpoint and keep the three main stops: the village viewpoint, Chengqi, and Shize.
Combining it with the Hongkeng area
With the 3-day combined ticket, you can visit Gaobei in the morning and travel to the Hongkeng Tulou Folk Culture Village or Tulou Prince Scenic Area after lunch. The two areas are about 5 kilometres apart, or around 10 minutes by car. The combined ticket does not guarantee free transport, so arrange the transfer in advance.
Cross-area visits require separate time for parking, ticket checks, and walking. Without a self-drive or chartered car, do not pack evening activities in both areas too tightly and risk missing the return transport.
Get there
Driving and parking
Drivers can navigate to “Yongding Gaobei Tulou Cluster Parking Lot.” Parking commonly costs about CNY 10 per visit and is relatively plentiful. After arriving, identify the visitor service centre and the return-car position before walking into the village.
The mountain road to Gaobei has many bends, and holiday peaks may bring traffic diversions. Do not use private roadside parking areas where people solicit drivers, and do not treat the internal walk through Gaobei and the transfer between scenic areas as one route that requires no driving.
High-speed rail and buses
From Longyan Station, go to the old Longyan Coach Station and take a bus toward Gaotou. The journey commonly takes about 1.5–2 hours, followed by a walk of about 10 minutes. Public-transport services are limited, so confirm the return time before leaving Gaobei.
From Xiamen, you can travel to Yongding and then transfer to a vehicle for the tulou. With older adults, children, or a planned Hongkeng visit, self-driving or a chartered car makes it easier to control the pace.
Know before you go
Scenic names and ticket relationship
Gaobei Tulou Cluster refers to the larger village and building area. Tulou King Scenic Area is one of the visitor-facing ticket and service names used within it, while Chengqi Building is the main single building. When buying tickets, check whether the product is a Gaobei single ticket, a combined ticket, or another package. Do not buy twice simply because all three names appear on a booking platform.
Open village roads do not mean that all tulou interiors are open. Residents' rooms, upstairs corridors, religious spaces, and private photography locations require on-site permission. Do not use “free guiding” or a paid shortcut to bypass management.
Timing, equipment, and avoiding unwanted purchases
Chengqi Building is usually crowded. Arrive early if you want a cleaner photograph. The village has many cobbled paths and steps, so wear flat, non-slip shoes, carry water in strong sunlight, and plan a rest.
People near the entrance may solicit visitors for guiding, tea, or cigarettes. Refuse directly. Drones, resident-led access, and temporary upstairs visits are not default Gaobei services; use the public viewpoints and open areas for photographs.
