The performance is at 1 Qianjin Road in Linchuan District's Wenchang Subdistrict, inside Wenchangli Historic and Cultural District. It has its own visitor center and check-in entrance. This is not a street performance that you can join while walking along the main street; buy a ticket according to the performance arrangement and check in at the visitor center.
Physical intensity and duration
The full route covers about 1.2 km and usually takes 1.5–2 hours of standing, walking, and several transitions between performance areas. There are about 800 fixed seats in the middle section, but the show is still primarily a walk-through immersive performance. It suits visitors who enjoy garden night views, opera themes, and immersive theatre; visitors who cannot stand or walk for long should consider the route carefully.
Ticket prices and sessions
Prices, ticket types, cultural-tourism card benefits, and daily sessions change by date, so the booking page is the basis for that night's plan. Regular performances may be concentrated on weekend evenings, with extra sessions possible during holidays. The show usually does not run on Mondays, and heavy rain or other severe weather may suspend it; confirm that it is running before you set out.

A walk-through immersive performance in the gardens
Based on *The Peony Pavilion*, the performance links the lake, lakeside path, a pavilion in the lake, and the waterside stage into several performance areas. The audience follows the story through the gardens, so the experience differs from sitting in front of a fixed stage. It suits visitors who are happy to watch while walking.
Water screens, the high platform, and the seated section
The opening “A Dream in the Garden” section unfolds by the lake, with water screens, lighting, and actor movement as the main visual elements. The middle section moves to a high platform with a more stable view. The later “Underworld Judgment / Resurrection” section uses fixed seating before the finale at another lakeside stage; fireworks or other closing content may vary by session.
Who it suits
Visitors interested in Tang Xianzu, *The Peony Pavilion*, or nighttime garden performances can treat this as a separate evening programme in Wenchangli. Photographers can look for the lake water screen, silhouettes on the high platform, and the illuminated gardens. Older visitors, pregnant visitors, and young children may find the dark setting, standing, walking, crowds, and transitions demanding; assess whether everyone can complete the route.

The complete 1.5–2-hour route
After check-in, enter the opening lakeside performance area and follow the first two acts through the garden route. Move with the audience to the high-platform area, then take a seat for “Underworld Judgment / Resurrection,” and finally continue to the other lakeside stage for the ending. The first lakeside area fills early, so watch the transition direction in the middle; use the toilet and fill your water bottle before check-in rather than leaving during the performance.
Viewing positions and leaving
The water-screen area has a more open view near the lake, but stay on the designated side of the open path and outside the barriers. The audience leaves together after the finale, so familiarize yourself with the exit direction. The performance exit is near Rudongyuan Parking Lot; follow the crowd after the show and do not move into a dangerous position to get a better view.
Get there
From Fuzhou Railway Station to the visitor center
A taxi from Fuzhou Railway Station takes about 15–20 minutes. You can also take Bus BG1 to the “Dream of the Peony Pavilion” stop or a nearby stop. Once in Wenchangli, set the visitor center as your navigation destination; its check-in entrance is separate from the district's main street.
Driving and the return after the show
For driving, use Rudongyuan Parking Lot as the destination. The walk from the parking lot connects with the performance entrance, and the exit also faces the parking-lot side. Some sessions may offer a parking discount that can be collected with the ticket; ask staff about the collection method when you enter. Ride-hailing cars may take longer to find after a holiday evening show.
Know before you go
Shoes, toilets, and stamina
The route includes about 1.2 km of walking and a long period on your feet, so wear flat, non-slip shoes suitable for walking. Transitions are frequent, and toilets are not easy to reach repeatedly; use one before entering. The fixed seats only reduce the time spent standing in part of the show and do not replace the walking route.
Weather and phone confirmation
Moderate or heavy rain and other severe weather may cancel the performance. Do not simply follow the original plan on a rainy day. Before leaving, call 0794-8288171 to confirm whether the show is running, the check-in time, and any temporary arrangements.
Photography and story preparation
At the lake, photograph the actors, boats, and water screen from outside the designated barrier; the high-platform section is good for silhouettes. Stay to one side of the audience route, keep transition paths clear, and do not cross the barriers. Reading a short synopsis of *The Peony Pavilion* beforehand will make the story of Du Liniang and Liu Mengmei easier to follow.
