How to Visit

Reach Xiahe County, then approach from outside the monastery
Labrang Monastery is in Xiahe County town. Walk from nearby accommodation or take a short local ride, park outside the monastery area if driving, and then enter on foot. On arrival, find out which halls and routes are open that day.
Tip:This is not an attraction within Hezuo, so allow separate travel time to Xiahe. Driving into the narrow, busy monastery surroundings is inconvenient and interrupts the visit.

Walk the prayer-wheel corridor before the main buildings
Begin at the outer prayer-wheel corridor, walking clockwise and turning the wheels gently as you go. Then visit the Great Scripture Hall, Butter Sculpture Hall, and nearby college buildings according to access conditions.
Tip:The corridor itself takes time and is not a shortcut across the monastery. Walking clockwise and leaving space for worshippers are the most important practical points for first-time visitors.

Allow enough time for halls and monastery life
Set aside at least two to three hours. If you encounter monks studying, chanting, or debating, watch quietly from a place that does not interfere and do not crowd around them as if it were a performance.
Tip:Halls may stop admitting visitors before the outer grounds close. Arriving in the morning gives you a better chance of completing the indoor visit in order.

Follow hall photography and clothing etiquette carefully
Keep your voice low before entering halls, remove hats if required, and wear clothing that covers shoulders and knees. Unless explicitly permitted, do not photograph Buddha images, monks, or worshippers, and do not touch offerings or religious objects.
Tip:This is an active monastery. Respectful behavior is essential and helps prevent access to parts of the complex from being refused.

Leave panoramic views and onward travel until after the monastery visit
After the main buildings and prayer-wheel route, use a higher place outside the monastery for wider views and evening light if weather and energy allow. Then return to Xiahe town to stay overnight or leave by your pre-arranged bus or private car.
Tip:Xiahe is at high altitude and temperatures fall quickly in the evening. Do not delay for sunset until you miss transport, or try to find a vehicle around the monastery after dark.
