How to Visit
1

Drive or hire a car for the grassland road between the Sangke Wetland area and Xiahe Airport.

Use this roughly 50 km stretch as a practical reference route, entering from either the Xiahe or airport side according to your itinerary. It works best as a drive with flexible stops, not as a destination with one entrance.

Tip:Buses and shared rides cannot reliably stop at viewpoints or guarantee a return from remote sections, so they are not the best main option for first-time visitors.
2

Drive slowly on the main road and park only where it is safe and does not obstruct traffic.

Look for views of Dajiutan meadow, the river, grazing animals, and open grassland. After stopping, take only short walks along the roadside or in clearly public areas rather than entering fenced pasture.

Tip:Do not follow side tracks into the grassland just because they look driveable. They may lead into pasture, turn soft after rain, or leave no safe place to turn around.
3

Finish as a half-day road experience and reach Xiahe or your next accommodation before dark.

Morning and late afternoon are good for photo stops, while midday is better for shorter walks in strong sun. If you join a herder-run horse ride or meal, agree on the route, duration, and price in person first.

Tip:This is not a single managed attraction, and food, toilets, and mobile signal may be unreliable. Do not base an overnight or late return on finding services at the last minute.
Highlights
  • The grassland road between the Sangke Wetland area and Xiahe Airport is Sangke’s most flexible way to visit.
  • The Daxia River, Dajiutan meadow, and grazing animals form a continuous landscape rather than one isolated sight.
  • You can choose short stops based on the light, making Sangke easy to add to a self-drive route around Xiahe.
  • There is no need to cover the entire grassland for a checklist; one or two safe stops are enough to appreciate its scale.
Insider Tips

Treat your vehicle as a moving viewpoint: drive slowly, stop briefly, then continue. This is safer and more respectful of pastureland than long walks across the grass.

Livestock may cross the road without warning. Slow down, avoid honking or using high beams near animals, and never chase them for photographs.

Do not treat visitor facilities or the wetland area as the grassland’s only entrance; they are only local stops along a much wider route.

Temperatures change sharply between day and night. A long-sleeve base layer with a windproof outer layer is more useful than summer clothes alone.

Refill water, fuel, and snacks in Xiahe before leaving. Shops, restaurants, and toilets farther into the grassland should not be treated as dependable services.
