How to Visit
1

Arrange return transport from Golmud

No direct metro. Travel from central Golmud or the railway station to Chaerhan Salt Lake Visitor Center by self-drive car or private hire. The drive is about 60 km and takes around one hour. Self-drivers can use the visitor-center car park; private-hire visitors should agree a pickup time with the driver.

Tip:Do not rely on infrequent buses for an independent return trip. Combining this stop with Wusute Water Yadan on the same day makes for a long, rushed day.
2

Park, buy the combined ticket, and take the scenic shuttle

Park at the visitor center, complete entry formalities, and take the required scenic-area shuttle into the main lake area. Seasonal admission and shuttle arrangements apply, so arrive early enough to complete the lake stops before the final return shuttle.

Tip:Private cars cannot enter the main lake area. Arriving late leaves too little time for the lake stops and can complicate your return to the car park.
3

Start at the designated Wanzhang Salt Bridge viewpoint

Follow the shuttle route to the Wanzhang Salt Bridge area and take in the salt-crust road, salt fields, and surrounding Gobi landscape. The shuttle ride takes about 20-30 minutes. Use only designated viewpoints and parking areas, and allow around 20-40 minutes for this stop.

Tip:Do not stop on the road or walk along it for photos. Scenic vehicles and heavy traffic make this dangerous and may cause you to miss the return shuttle.
4

Spend the main part of the visit at Bishui Yaotai and the salt-flower area

Photograph the lake reflections at Bishui Yaotai, then follow the open route toward Qian Dao Salt Flowers and other accessible areas. Still conditions and softer sunlight are best for reflections. Wear closed walking shoes or boots when viewing salt flowers and salt crusts.

Tip:Brine can irritate skin and sharp salt crust can damage feet. Do not enter the water, collect salt, or cross barriers to reach unofficial photo spots.
5

Return to the shuttle stop with time to spare

Leave the final photo stop early enough to reach the designated pickup point, return to the visitor center, and collect your vehicle. Bring drinking water, simple food, wet wipes, sunscreen, and sunglasses, as substantial meals are limited inside the scenic area. If carrying a drone, follow the on-site registration process.

Tip:Plateau UV and lake glare can make midday more tiring than expected. Leave enough time for the shuttle, driving, and the next reliable supply stop.
Highlights
  • Bishui Yaotai combines green brine, salt banks, and calm water for reflection photography.
  • Qian Dao Salt Flowers offers close views of natural salt crystals and crust patterns.
  • Wanzhang Salt Bridge and its designated viewpoints show the scale of the salt-lake industrial landscape.
  • The scenic shuttle links the principal stops without requiring visitors to navigate unfamiliar lake-area roads.
  • Morning and late-afternoon light is usually easier to work with than harsh midday glare.
Insider Tips

Visit early or later in the afternoon to avoid the strongest glare and heat during exposed walking.

Use SPF50+ sunscreen with sunglasses, a sun hat, and long sleeves; reflected UV is intense.

Park, walk, and photograph only in designated areas, especially around Wanzhang Salt Bridge.

Buy water and snacks in Golmud before departure rather than relying on limited scenic-area supplies.

If shoes or a vehicle contact brine or salt mud, rinse them with fresh water as soon as practical.
