How to Visit
1

Plan a full day from Golmud via the Kunlun Mountains branch road

Leave Golmud southbound on G109, then turn toward the pool on the mountain branch road near Wuji Longfenggong. West Queen Mother Pool is about 250 km from Golmud. Allow roughly 4-6 hours each way and treat it as a full-day return journey; actual timing depends on road conditions, weather, stops, and high-altitude pacing. There is no direct public transport, so use a self-drive vehicle or a compliant car service familiar with highland routes.

Tip:Do not force the pool route and a deep Hoh Xil route into one day. Both need room for high-altitude driving and a safe return.
2

Choose a vehicle for the day's conditions and stock up in Golmud

Fill the tank before departure and use a reliable vehicle with suitable clearance for mountain roads; assess the final section conservatively. The first part follows G109, while conditions farther in, including water crossings and weather, can change by season. An SUV or higher-clearance vehicle is more practical; ordinary sedans should not force their way through standing water, ice, potholes, or construction detours. Golmud is the most reliable supply point, and the Wuji Longfenggong area can serve as an intermediate rest stop.

Tip:Do not treat temporary roadside stalls, fuel availability, or mobile payment in weak-signal areas as guaranteed.
3

Keep the lakeside visit short and stay on established ground

Park only in legal areas and use existing paths or clearly passable parts of the shore for a short visit. The pool is about 4,470 metres above sea level, with the lake and snow mountains as the main views. Settle into the altitude before walking, keep a slow pace, and avoid long walks, running, or heading toward unpaved, wet, or unclear lakeshore ground.

Tip:Wind, cold, and altitude can reduce judgement. If weather deteriorates or you feel unwell, shorten the stop and begin the return journey.
4

Make daylight return your hard boundary

Leave enough time in the afternoon to return to G109 and Golmud rather than driving unlit mountain roads after dark. Mountain weather changes quickly, while darkness makes visibility, crosswinds, cold, and road reading more difficult. If the pool is part of a longer Qinghai-Tibet itinerary, have the next night's accommodation and supplies arranged first.

Tip:Do not stop for photographs on shoulders, riverbeds, or unsigned turn-offs; use only parking areas where you can leave the main road safely.
Highlights
  • A highland lake at about 4,470 metres, where clear weather can bring reflections of the Kunlun snow mountains.
  • A route that leaves G109 for the Kunlun interior, moving from plateau road scenery to snow mountains, valleys, and lakeshore.
  • The Wuji Longfenggong area works as both a route junction and a rest point.
  • Possible distant sightings of kiang, Tibetan gazelle, and other wildlife.
  • Best suited to a mountain driving route with short stops, rather than a long hiking itinerary.
Insider Tips

This is a high-altitude driving destination, not an ordinary lakeside park; give more time to roads and weather than to photography.

Clear skies improve the views but do not mean warm conditions; gloves, a hat, and a windproof layer are still useful.

Do not enter soft shoreline ground, unpaved lake edges, or unclear side roads.

Arrange the return early enough to avoid leaving after dark for better light.

Keep wildlife observation quiet and distant: no feeding or pursuit.
