Plan at a glance
Terrain and location
Chilechuan Alpine Grassland (敕勒川高山草原), also known locally as Huanghuawopu Alpine Grassland (黄花窝铺高山草原), lies in Baohe Shao Town (保合少镇), Xincheng District (新城区), on the southern slopes of Daqing Mountain (大青山). Look for the area near Provincial Highway S104 (省道S104) when navigating. This mountain meadow is separate from the Chilechuan Grassland recreation area around Sun Plaza (太阳广场).
How much time to allow
Allow 2 to 3 hours to take a shuttle and walk at the higher viewpoints. Plan a full hike according to the day’s route and your fitness. Leave extra time for the mountain road or bus ride to and from the city; if traveling by bus, allow time to wait.
Facilities and supplies
Mountain meadows, woodland, and boardwalks make up the main landscape, and services on the mountain are limited. When you arrive, confirm the restroom, supply, shuttle-stop, and return-trip locations. Bring water and warm clothing before you set out.

Choose your visit
Mountain ridges and meadows
This is a landscape of ridges and meadows, not a flat grassland. In spring and summer, look for wildflowers and changing grass colors. Winds and temperature differences increase in autumn. Scenery changes with the weather; flower fields and herds of cattle or sheep are not guaranteed.
Prayer flags and boardwalks
Prayer flags and wooden boardwalks near the mountain's upper viewpoints are among the area's main sights. Check that the paths are open, then follow the marked routes for views of the valleys and meadows. If a section is closed because of maintenance or weather, turn back along the open route. Do not cross barriers.
Who will enjoy it
This area suits visitors who like mountain scenery and can manage mountain roads and walking. Food options and accessible facilities are limited; if you depend on these services, confirm arrangements for the day in advance.
Photography and views
From open viewpoints, photograph the ridges, meadows, and boardwalks. Secure your equipment in strong winds. Do not stop to take pictures on bends, road shoulders, or in areas where parking is prohibited.
For a separate forest-park visit with its own shuttle routes, see Hadamen National Forest Park.
Build your day
Short visit by shuttle
Enter through the entrance open that day and confirm the shuttle’s destination and last departure. Ride uphill to an open stop, take a short walk on the boardwalk, then return on the shuttle. Note the stop name and return point; if the shuttle is not running, do not treat the mountain road as a shortcut.
Hiking route
In suitable weather and with hiking experience, start at the trailhead marked on site, follow an open path uphill, enjoy the views, and return the same way. Do not take unverified dirt tracks or walk across the meadow. Tell your companions when you expect to return and leave enough time.
Combine with nearby mountain sights
Hongshiya (红石崖) and Hongzhao Jiulongwan (红召九龙湾) are separate nearby attractions; they do not share this grassland’s entrance or shuttle ticket. Before driving between them, confirm each site’s opening, road, and parking conditions. Do not treat dirt tracks as a confirmed loop route.
Plan the bus return
City information from 2026 lists the Huanghuawopu sightseeing bus line (黄花窝铺观光线) at RMB 2; its endpoints and schedule may change. Check the last bus in both directions before setting out. The city bus and the scenic area’s shuttle are separate services.
Get there
Navigation and mountain roads
Search for “Chilechuan Alpine Grassland” (敕勒川高山草原) or Huanghuawopu Village (黄花窝铺村), and confirm the destination is near S104 in Baohe Shao Town. Use the main road open that day; do not drive onto closed side roads, meadows, or fire-control roads.
Driving and taxi
Drive to the service area at the foot of the mountain or a signed parking area. S104 has many bends; slow down and pass carefully in rain, snow, or fog, and do not stop on a bend. If taking a taxi, agree on a pickup time and location; do not assume a car will be available on demand.
Public transport
Check the day’s stops and last departure for the Huanghuawopu sightseeing bus. Routes can change, so confirm the endpoints, return time, and transfers before leaving. The scenic-area shuttle and city bus are separate services.
Know before you go
Opening, admission, and shuttles
Published visitor information lists opening hours of 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. and free entry; sightseeing vehicles charge separately. Hours, fees, and last departures may change, so follow the operator’s notice or on-site information on the day.
Weather and gear
It can be much colder and windier at the summit than in the city. Bring water, a warm layer, sun protection, and shoes with good grip. Shorten your visit or reschedule in thunderstorms, strong winds, or icy conditions.
Ecology and safety
Stay on open paths, do not trample the meadow, pick flowers, or drive into the grassland, and follow fire-prevention rules. Mobile reception may be unreliable in the mountains, so save a map in advance. Return to the shuttle or parking area before dark, and do not take unmarked routes alone.
