Location and entrance
Chang Family Manor is in Chewang Village, Dongyang Town, Yuci District, Jinzhong. The main entrance is the Fort Gate. The manor spreads along a long street, with courtyards, gardens, and an academy across a broad area, so a full visit means sustained walking.
Allow about 2 hours for the core route or 3–4 hours for the fuller route. Walking the main courtyards and gardens usually adds up to about 8,000 steps. The site suits visitors who enjoy large historic compounds, gardens, and Shanxi merchant culture; older visitors, children, and anyone unable to walk long distances should use a shorter route.
Tickets and hours
Adult admission is CNY 80. Students and visitors aged 60–64 pay half price, while visitors aged 65 and above and children under 1.2 metres enter free. Real-name reservations are available through the “山西常家庄园景区” WeChat account. The entry method for Chinese visitors uses a Chinese resident ID; international visitors should check which identification document is accepted when booking.
Peak-season hours from April 1 to October 31 are 08:00–18:30. Low-season hours from November 1 to March 31 are 08:30–17:30. Check the ticket, reservation, third-party package validation, and closing arrangements for your travel date.

Fort Gate, ancestral hall, and Guihe Hall
The Fort Gate gives you a sense of the manor’s long-street scale. Continue to the Chang Family Ancestral Hall for the Hundred Longevity Screen, then look closely at the hanging flower gate, screen wall, and brick, wood, and stone carvings in Guihe Hall.
Chang Family Manor is built around its long-street compound and scholar-merchant culture. Its core experience combines the Fort Gate, ancestral hall, Guihe Hall, Jingyuan, and the academy, with the garden and long-street layout as the main thread.
Jingyuan, the academy, and high views
Jingyuan is a private garden within the manor, with pavilions, small bridges, and water features. Shiyunxuan Academy has stone inscriptions and calligraphy; Xingyuan and Baishi Garden are useful additions on the fuller route.
The top of Guanjiage offers a view across the tiled roofs and the manor. The Fort Gate tower is another high viewpoint. For detail shots, use Guihe Hall’s hanging flower gate and screen wall; a clear day makes the courtyards easier to read.

Build your day
Two-hour short route
Enter through the Fort Gate, visit the Chang Family Ancestral Hall and its Hundred Longevity Screen, then continue to Guihe Hall for the carving details and on to Jingyuan before leaving. The route takes about 2 hours and keeps the entrance, main courtyard, and garden in one walking sequence.
Give Jingyuan enough time to see how the garden sits against the compound walls rather than treating it as a quick photo stop. If your group walks at different speeds, meet at Jingyuan or the exit instead of repeatedly walking back along the long street.
Three- to four-hour fuller route
Add Shiyunxuan Academy, Xingyuan, and Baishi Garden, then climb Guanjiage for a panorama of the manor. The fuller route takes about 3–4 hours, and the academy, gardens, and high viewpoint may follow different open paths.
Before leaving, return to the Fort Gate or exit area for water, belongings, and the return trip. If you are also visiting Yuci Old Town, complete the main manor route first and calculate the inter-attraction journey separately.
Get there
Bus from Yuci Old Town
From the bus stop diagonally opposite Yuci Old Town’s East Gate, take Bus 12 to the terminus at Chang Family Manor. The fare is CNY 3. Yuci Old Town and Chang Family Manor can be linked by this bus, but they are separate attractions with separate tickets and visits.
From Yuci Railway Station, take a taxi for about 20 minutes, or take Bus 1 to Yijing International Hotel and transfer to Bus 12. The manor is in a less central location and ride-hailing cars are limited, so Bus 12 is the clearest return option.
Driving and parking
For a self-drive visit, navigate to “Chang Family Manor.” The parking area costs about CNY 10–15 per visit. Enter through the Fort Gate after parking, and allow time to collect the car after the long walking route; the Yuci Old Town parking area is not the manor entrance.
Know before you go
Walking, guides, and tickets
A complete visit is about 8,000 steps, and some areas are dim. Wear flat shoes with good grip. An official group guide costs about CNY 20–30, and an electronic guide is another option; the buildings are spread out, so following the courtyard sequence helps connect the layout.
Adult admission is CNY 80, and online channels may offer discounts. Some third-party discount packages may validate differently from standard tickets, so check the date, validation method, and inclusions before buying.
Food and return trip
Inside the manor, you can consider Changshi Restaurant or Fuyuxiang (Chang Family Restaurant), with dishes such as guo-you pork and knife-cut noodles. The town about 5 km away has more choices. If a driver recommends a restaurant, look at the menu, prices, and recent reviews before deciding.
Ride-hailing cars are limited after the visit, so Bus 12 is the practical return option. If you combine Chang Family Manor and Yuci Old Town on one day, allow for the manor’s 2–4 hours of walking; the two sites should not be compressed into one short courtyard visit.
